Land’s End parkrun #16 07/03/2020

Course record smashed today!!  Our previous record was 17.48 but Pete le Grice took over two minutes off that time by finishing in 15.37!  The second runner was just coming onto the loop when Pete had completed nearly two laps.  He then set his sights on catching and overtaking any runners before he went into the finish which he successfully did of all bar the second place!

We had some early birds from Bromley turn up as they took the only bus from Penzance which would get them to parkrun on time - the 6.30am arriving at 7.30am!  They then had a walk to Porthcurno in order to get the bus back to Penzance and then the train to St Austell as they were staying at the YHA at Eden.

Mother and son, Sandra and Sam Treleven, have been planning this event for a while as they both wanted to complete their 100th parkrun together.  Well done to both of them! Mike Kestle from Newquay kept very quiet the fact that this was his 200th parkrun but his friends let the cat out of the bag!

Today was also International Women's Day and Active Cornwall donated 100 pedometers and some t-shirts, which were all handed out to the runners whether male or female as they all took part.

This week 114 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 39 were first timers and 25 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 14 different clubs took part.

We worked with the organisers of the Arc of Attrition 50 mile race from the Minack Theatre to ensure that both events could take place safely even though their race ran the opposite way along part of our parkrun course.  It was great to see the ultra runners cheering on the parkrunners and vice a versa!

Land’s End parkrun #8 04/01/20

Although Land's End parkrun started a few weeks back in November, today was our official launch. What a morning! - there is so much news to report it's difficult to know where to start.

A record 222 people completed the course, almost double the previous week's attendance record. We also had new male, female & age grade course records - well done to David Williams and Zelah Morrall.

We also had visitors from Poole, Nottingham, Plymouth and Edinburgh and one runner who completed his 50th parkrun today.

We also welcomed several staff from local GP practices in Penzance and beyond, who either completed the parkrun or volunteered. Local GP practices have been united in their support of Land's End parkrun and have been involved in setting it up. They have also contributed to the majority of the set-up costs. We now plan to keep on "prescribing parkrun" to our patients as we are all very aware of the benefits of participating in and volunteering at parkrun for physical and mental health.

Last but certainly not least we were delighted to welcome Helen Glover and Steve Backshall, together with son Logan, as our special guests today. Local girl and double Olympic champion Helen was our official starter today.

Carmen, one of our other young volunteers, has already started her volunteering for her Bronze DofE and has volunteered at every Land's End parkrun so far.

Luke, 7, performed a very important role as marshal at the finish point and did an excellent job of cheering on all the runners as they passed by.

Well that was a bit wet in places (most places!)  Big puddles to jump over or try and go round without getting you feet wet (it didn't happen!)
