parkrun UK visit to Northern Ireland – 12.05.2017

In other news this week, Robin and Maria met with parkrun UK staff and with representatives from other parkruns in Northern Ireland on Friday 12th May in the  evening in Belfast.

This was an opportunity to learn from each other and to share our experiences.  It was great to hear how others dealt with any challenges and their enthusiasm was infectious.  Hopefully the UK delegation were impressed with the passion that everyone who was there has for parkrun.

Defibrillator for Larne parkrun

parkrun has always been free, and always will be.  You will never be asked to pay to take part in parkrun.

However, UK Athletics, our insurers, have asked parkrun UK to seek AEDs (Defibrillators) for all of their events. We at Larne parkrun wish to honour that request by UK Athletics.  More importantly, however, we wish to honour our commitment to you, our participants to "offer an opportunity for all the local community, male or female, young or old, to come together on a regular basis to enjoy our beautiful park and get physically active into the bargain."

One of the best ways of ensuring that experience is as safe as possible is by having a AED within 5 minutes of the finish line. This is statistically where most incidents of cardiac arrest occur.  The combination of CPR and an AED hugely improves the chances of survival in the case of a sudden cardiac arrest. For example, there is a

• 5% survival rate with no intervention

• 9% survival rate with CRP alone

• 74% survival rate when a defibrillator has been used within 5 minutes.

While a scenario we would never hope to encounter, imagine IF something were to happen and we were unable to save someone’s life because we didn’t have an AED.  We have been lucky so far that we have never had such an event occur, but we don’t want to depend on luck in the future.

Therefore, given those circumstances, we would like to ask for your help to raise funds to purchase an AED (defibrillator) for Larne parkrun.

There is already a mechanism in place that allows you to donate to Larne parkrun, though we have never promoted this, nor actively sought donations.  You can make a donation via a link on our website http://www.parkrun.org.uk/larne/aboutus/

Normally 15% of donations goes to support the set up of new parkrun events, with the other 85% going to the event itself, however, parkrun knows that we are fundraising for a defibrillator for our event and therefore 100% of your donation will go towards the AED.

The team at Larne parkrun would really appreciate any donation you can give, big or small. Also, if anyone has any other ideas, or can help in any way, please let us know, or speak to any of the team on a Saturday morning. We would love to hear from you.

Many Thanks, and happy parkrunning!
