Run the Rainbow – Clare Andrews

Littleport parkrun Event number 60 10th August 2019

Wind didn't stop play at Littleport's 60th parkrun, a 'Run the Rainbow' Pride special.

Intrepid Event Directors Amanda and James were up with the larks to check the course, and the answer was WE'RE ON!

Today was a special parkrun, coinciding with the second annual Pride in Ely event. We invited parkrunners to 'Run the Rainbow' and participate this week in bright colours. Our 232 parkrunners certainly didn't disappoint, with rainbow wigs, socks, jumpsuits and more being spotted around the course, whilst others wore their best and brightest running leggings and tops.

Of course, parkrun is always inclusive, and today we celebrated that together in the time honoured way of running 5k at 9am on a Saturday morning. I can't think of a better way to start the Pride in Ely celebrations.

We had an incredible 51 first timers to our Littleport course, some here to join in the Pride celebrations, and others tourists from the many other local parkruns that were cancelled due to the high winds. Many of the latter were members of the 50, 100 and 250 parkruns clubs.

The finishers were greeted with a Pride flag adorned table with loveheart sweets and cakes available to enjoy and refuel after their 5k efforts.

Now parkrun wouldn't be parkrun without a coffee and catch up afterwards and a group of us had rather good fun eating cakes and sipping coffee afterwards; the endorphins from running and the caffeine apparently making us the loudest table in the Leisure Centre cafe!

Next week will mark one year of me taking part in Littleport parkrun, and I'm forever grateful for the fun and friendship I've found there every Saturday, rain or shine. It was my other half James' first ever pakrun today and he loved it too. I'll let him off for coming in 30 seconds faster than me....mind you, I did equal my PB.

Of course parkrun could not go ahead without our wonderful volunteers so a special mention to them.

That was fun. Shall we do it again next week? #DFYB #RuntheRainbow #loveparkrun
