0DAB1D69-1439-4D25-A173-88DFD378DBA2Littleport’s 91st parkrun welcomed 193 participants to their special double celebration of not only marking International Women’s Day but their two parkrunners Charlotte Nevison and Cathy Gibb-de Swarte who were taking part in their 50th parkrun this morning.
Brian Munns who was representing Newmarket Joggers was competing in this his 3rd Littleport parkrun had reached his 100th parkrun and clocked an impressive time of 22.58 this morning.
Many of the parkrunners/walkers were dressed in the women’s suffragette movement colours of mainly purple which stood for loyalty while the other suffragette colours were white and green which stood for purity and hope.
Joanne Bruno who achieved a New Personal Best of 39.42 was wearing a very fetching purple tutu, while Cathy, who ran with her round the course donned a striking purple midi top hat and WID tee-shirt. If there were any prizes going this morning to the best dressed parkrunner – it had to go our very own diva Phil Hadley. Wearing a long flowing bright purple wig and fashionable purple sunglasses, Phil managed somehow to get himself around the course dressed in a really tight fitting long frock. Phil was also joined by his purple wigged partner Lisa Tonkin dressed in a very sensible purple jumpsuit but her young enthusiastic daughter Emma was happy to be wearing her fun loving purple tutu.
It was great to see the return of many regulars like farmer Lisa Forrest who was cheered when she crossed over the line in the finishing funnel clocking an excellent 54.57.
Emma Harrison with doggy companion Buddy who was completing her 26th parkrun clocked an impressive time of 35.22. And the Sanderson family, Mum Hilary, Hannah and Lucie Melen came together for this special parkrun and were seen having fun racing one another through the finishing funnel with Lucie edging it.
One of Littleport’s parkrun organisers James Lee despite an injured knee was still happy to parkrun with his rescue Rottweiler Xenia clocking a very impressive time of 27.02.
There was a record of 54 New Personal Bests of which 28 were women parkrunners/walkers and 20 tourists, and amongst those New PBers were Ian Barnish (21.34) Youngsters Kieran Vanhoutte (21.47) Malachi Platt (21.58) Amy Southward (22.10) Harriet Froud (22.20) Estivy Perez (22.21) Alice Fraser (22.45) Darlene Schulenberg (23.32) Libby Church (25.13) Becky Stanford (25.,16) Michelle Sampson (25.21) Lonely Goat runner Connor Hitchcock (25.24). And Caroline’s son Andy taking part in his first ever parkrun and representing Lonely Goats RC recorded a very impressive time of 24.34.
The first person through the finishing funnel this morning was teenager Patrick Bond who also recorded a superb New Personal Best of 17.52.
Parkruns wouldn’t go ahead if it wasn’t for the Hi-Viz heroes who put themselves forward to volunteer on Saturdays which included this morning one of our top runners Tom Levinson who was saving himself for tomorrow’s Cambridge Half Marathon. Thanks also to our other regular parkrunners: Clare Andrews, Emma Davis, Clare Dell, John Lagrue, Debbie Williams, Jan Holmes, Caity Ross and Mhairi Smeeton who also decided to volunteer. And Littleport had two new tail walkers, Lizzie Sparrow and Janette Palmer who both did a brill job as Janette also undertook the First Timers briefing.
There is always a brilliant camaraderie amongst parkrunners and Cathy Gibb-de Swarte’s fellow running buddies, Wendy Georgina Johnston and Sheila Cayton who she first met running at their local parkrun Milton, Cambridge, turned up wearing their landmark 50th red parkrun tee-shirts in support of both Cathy and Charlotte’s 50th parkrun this morning and stayed behind to share a cuppa and enjoy a friendly chat in the hospitable Littleport Leisure cafe.

This weekend Littleport was transformed into London! Well, it was at least for Jo WHITE, Lizzie HYSLOP and Sarah McConnell, who, not to be beaten by the cancellation of the London Winter 10k this weekend, did our 5k parkrun, and then did it all again! Well done ladies.

In total, 176 people braved the weather warnings to run, jog and walk the “B” course. Hopefully sometime soon we’ll be back on the “A” route, but after this weekend’s weather I think that day is getting further away rather than closer! We welcomed 19 first timers to Littleport, including 12 for whom it was their first ever recorded parkrun. Welcome to the community!

Somehow, despite the mud, 40 new Personal Bests were recorded today! Congratulations to 2nd finisher, Patrick BOND, who got his 2nd PB week in a row, shaving the seconds off, and only a single second behind Alex METCALFE. Is that a record for number of “seconds” in one sentence?! Another PB went to Harriet KERRIDGE, who was also celebrating her 50th parkrun. Congratulations to Harriet and to David PRICE, also on his 50th. Half way to their first official milestone are Don ABEYSEKERA and Natasha MITCHELL, both on 25 this week.

This week’s parkrun was made possible by 30 volunteers, and we need volunteers, week in, week out. Have you ever thought about your run:volunteer ratio? I’ve just had a look, and mine is 60:19. I know that many people don’t want to miss out on their run, and I can totally understand that because I only run at parkrun! But did you realise that there are a number of volunteer roles you can do and still get your run in? These include set-up and close-down, first timer briefing, token sorting and run report writing. Take a look on the future roster at https://www.parkrun.org.uk/littleport/futureroster/ and see info on all the roles at https://volunteer.parkrun.com/principles/volunteer-roles. Each time you volunteer you gain a credit towards your V25 t-shirt. Nothing to lose and lots to gain, so go on, give it a go.

Thanks to this week’s volunteers:

Event 86 run report from Lucie Melen

Littleport parkrun
Event number 86
1st February 2020

This week 164 hardy folk braved the wind and the mud to complete Littleport parkrun. We welcomed 16 first timers to Littleport, including Jordi MOAT of Colchester Harriers, who came in as 1st woman with a time of 21:52. An impressive 10 of these were recording their first ever parkrun - a big HELLO to you all and welcome to the community. I’d like to give an especially big welcome to little Flavia ROLFE on her first parkrun as I believe she’s only 4!

Congratulations and celebrations are due to a wonderful four people who ran their 50th parkrun today - Rachel and Matthew WINSON, Alison CROSSMAN and Jenny JEFFREYS. Well Done and thank you for the chocolates! An impressive 49 PBs were achieved today, with times right through from 18:07 to 48:55, and every single one just as important to the achiever, I’m sure! Whilst not at Littleport but a way away in Cardiff, another PB was set today for the whole of parkrun - Charlotte ARTER ran 15:49, beating her own previous record as the fastest ever female.

You might have noticed we have a brand new “selfie board”! Do have a pose and share your pictures to spread the parkrun love.

Lisa, Littleport and March parkrun regular reflects on her 50 milestone parkrun at Littleport.

Littleport parkrun #84 – 18/01/2020 – Milestones Galore

What a cold, crisp start to a Saturday morning – today the route was altered to minimise running on the paths as they were treacherous. The start line was moved to the big field - we were running on grass around the big field, down the drove, round the little field, along the verge next to the path, along a bit of the path and to add some interest through the bike shed! Well done Alex for leading the way on a very new route.

Today numbers were swelled due to Huntingdon and March parkrun’s being cancelled – we had tourists from March, Huntingdon, Kings Lynn and Surrey to name but a few – welcome one and all. Milestones today - we had our very own James Lee our amazing Run Director on his 100th parkrun, Alex Metcalfe our often time fastest finisher on his 100th parkrun and little ol’ me Lisa Forrest on my 50th parkrun.

This morning we had a very respectable 191 runners, joggers and walkers enjoy the two- and a-bit lap route of Littleport Recreation Ground.

First across the line for the gents was Alex Metcalfe of Ely Runners in 19:24. First across the line for the ladies was Elaine Smith with 24:53 also of Ely Runners.

We had 13 PBs this morning and 27 people who were at Littleport parkrun for the first time. We also had 59 runners representing 17 clubs.

The event was made possible by 28 volunteers today (round of applause please):

Michelle BERRY, Vicky BERRY, Ethan COLE, Ben COOK, Rachel DRAY, James ELVIN, Lisa FORREST, Sarah GARROD, Cathy GIBB DE SWARTE, Susan GREEN, Peter GREEN, Liz HYSLOP, Jane JOHANNESSEN, Joanne KERRIDGE, James LEE, Marion LEONARD, Amanda MURFITT, Charlotte NEVISON, Holly RYDER, Hannah SANDERSON, Sarah SKILLEN, Mhairi SMEETON, Michelle TILBROOK, Breda WALTON, Jo WHITE, Christine WINDSOR

On a final personal note from me. I would have never thought when I started my parkrun journey that I would make it to 50. And what a journey, its been so far – I’ve met loads of lovely people, made some wonderful friendships, learned a lot about myself and what I am a capable of. If you are thinking about doing parkrun; just do it – you might just surprise yourself, who knows where it might lead. Here’s to the next milestone.

Sunrises, celebrations, a mayor visit and birthday surprises.

It was a cold bitter morning blessed with a gorgeous sunrise across the Littleport Leisure center playing field.
Today's Littleport Parkrun was event no.82 and had many achievements to celebrate and eat cake!

Our very own Littleport Parkrun regular and fancy dress enthusiast Cathy Gibb-de Swarte was greated by fellow parkrunners who had dressed up in their finest fancy dress outfits to celebrate Cathy's upcoming 65 birthday and her 50th time volunteering! Cathy took on the tail walker role today, joining first timer Sally GIPP on her first ever Parkrun. Huge well done and we hope to see you on a regular basis!

Cathy also invited the Mayor of Ely along to join in the celebrations! The Mayor of Ely, Mike Rouse accepted Cathy's invite and joined us for the start of Parkrun dressed in his Mayoral robes and chain of office.

If you have never volunteered at Parkrun before you honestly should, it is so much fun, plus there is a variety of roles available for all abilities to do.

But the celebrations don't end there!

Another Littleport Parkrun regular Rachel Dray was celebrating completing her 50th Parkrun! Rachel has been enjoying Parkruns since 2018, she keeps on coming back for more. So that means more cakes to celebrate!

And now for some stats!

Fastest runner today was Alex METCALFE finished in 19:23.
1st junior runner was Patrick BOND finishing in 19:24.
1st lady finisher was Amy SOUTHWARD who finished in 23:05.
19 first timers to Parkrun, welcome!
18 park runners achieved PBS, well done!
Furthest parkrunner tourist came from Scotland!

A fantastic start to the year all!

Pre-Christmas parkrun report from Cathy

Pre-Christmas celebrations came to Littleport’s 79th parkrun this morning with Santas, elfs, reindeers, doggies wearing various festive jumpers and even Spiderman (Ian Barnish 23.27) and Batwoman (Lisa Long/Redman 28.51) brought their super-powers to bear getting into the festive spirit.
One of Littleport’s parkrun organisers James Lee confided that he had to change the whole course overnight because of the appalling wet weather we had been experiencing without which re-planning the event would have had to be cancelled due to waterlogged conditions.

The 116 participants all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and there was much encouraging going on by everyone as they passed each other when completing the laps around the tarmac. Our four- legged friends from Luna to tail walking companion Roo, who made a rare appearance coming out of semi-retirement, also obviously enjoyed their parkrun too.
This certainly is a social occasion and feels like parkrunning/walking is being a member of one big happy family. There is plenty of support there for all who join in this great pastime from the volunteers to participants. And everyone was pleased to welcome back one of our regulars Nicky Garrett who has been out of action since August. Nicky was accompanied by tail walker Kath Gerighty and doggie Roo (previously mentioned) and did exceptionally well finishing the course in an impressive time of 58.23.
Parkrun/walk is all about having fun, and it gets that bit sweeter when you happen to achieve a New Personal Best, and this is what happened to both Julie Murfitt and Andrea Sullivan who really pulled out all the stops and certainly looked the part in their festive Christmas jumpers. Julie who was taking part in her 13th parkrun achieved her New PB of 34.25, while Andrea completing only her 4th clocked a fantastic New PB of 34.32.
Congrats also to Joanne Bruno who had just returned to parkrunning/walking due to ill health last week must be delighted with her effort this morning finishing in an impressive time of 41.28. Quite a few mother and daughter combos like Sarah McConnell and her mum, Lizzie Hyslop, were close behind Joanne finishing in a time of 42.29 and 42.38. It was good also to see many more regular parkrunners return and they were Don Abeysekera (23.02) young Ethan Cole (24.37) Sarah Lund (24.58) Michelle Berry (27.47) Leigh Marshall (28.21) Ruth Feltell (28.27) James Lee (27.34) Amanda Murfitt (27.35) Charlotte Nevison (28.52) Jane Hill (29.48) Clare Dell (29.48) Janette Palmer (30.02) Francesca Flack (31.04) Caity Ross (32.12) Emma Davis (35.25) Cathy Gibb de Swarte and Ruby Reindeer (35.35) Lucie Melen (36.34) and Clare Andrews who received her 50th volunteer shirt last Saturday clocked 38.38 despite carrying an ankle injury.
Well done to all who achieved New PBs and they were: Estivy Perez (22.40) Cailtan Burke (23.07) Amy Southward (23.28) Laura Upstone (27.35) Carlin Reeve (28.04) Stuart Byrne (28.15) Anthony Sale (29.36) Louise Parfitt (31.41) Henry Fairpo (32.28) Julie Murfitt (34.25) Andrea Sullivan (34.32) Martin Palmer (35.04) Eleanor Stewart (37.29).
And the first person over the finishing funnel was Alex Metcalfe who clocked 17.43.
Thank you for all those hardworking marshals who braved the cold this morning and they were: Nik Banks, Allistair Berry, Kath and Terry Gerighty, Nicola Gilbert, Susan and Peter Green, Liz Hyslop, John Lagrue who was happy to give this morning's briefing, Poppy and James Lee, Martin Lewis, Lucie Melen (conducting the first time briefing), Amanda Murfitt, Janette Palmer, Hannah Sanderson, Hilary Sanderson, Lionel Smith, Lizzie Sparrow, Michelle Tilbrook, Breda Walton and Jo White.
Why not come and join us for our next parkrun on Saturday 28th – you are all welcome to join in the fun.

Festive parkruns at Littleport.

We will not be holding a Christmas Day parkrun this year, but plan to hold a 9.00am event New Year’s Day. This will enable runners to do comfortably either March or Brandon Country Park parkruns at 10.30, the only opportunity to do the double this festive season as all Christmas Day events are to be held at 9.00 am.

Volunteers are required for New Year’s Day so shake off that hangover with some fresh air and help at your favourite parkrun event if you don’t plan to run please.

If you look to do either days please post up on the Facebook page for lift shares as we all know parkrun is better with friends.
Happy Christmas and parkrunning new year everyone.

The Littleport Event Team.

This weeks report is from our very own Cathy.

Cathy (centre) enjoying the pre-event banter.

Cathy (centre) enjoying the pre-event banter.

There is nothing like a parkrun to help lift your spirits, and the support from many Littleport parkrunners/walkers who were wearing pink for one local parkrunner who’s partner had just undergone a mastectomy and cancerous lymph node removal was quite amazing
A huge thank you goes out to all the organisers and volunteers who had to physically change the course because of the dangerous muddy and wet conditions down The Drove which had a new layer of straw over it.
The organisers had posted on Littleport parkrun facebook beforehand about the important changes which included a specific warning!
“Please be aware it is still slippery on the altered route so run to the conditions. The other option was to cancel and no one wants that.”
Littleport parkrun organisers have always pulled out the stops to make this local popular event happen every Saturday, and all the runners, walkers, children and doggies were just delighted to take part.
And the runners/walkers didn’t disappoint either with everyone being careful along the new slippery pathway and we were delighted to report that there were 17 New Personal Bests and 11 parkrunner/walkers took part in their first ever parkrun at Littleport
There were 139 taking part with Alex Metcalfe who was completing his 90th parkrun finished as the first person over the finishing funnel clocking a time of 19.03. And not far behind Alex was young powerhouse Alfie Pipe who was representing Tailenders and clocked an amazing New Personal Best of 19.12.
Congrats goes out to the amazing Sarah Lund who finished as the first female over the finishing funnel in a time of 24.51 completing her 17th Parkrun of which 14 were here at Littleport.
Amongst the rest of the New Personal Best achievers were Charles Hutchens (22.26). Anna Ambrose (25.06). Nathaniel M. Hagan (25.28). Alex Trense (26.20). Susan Thornton (29.02). Helen Hill (29.19). Gemma Wright (30.08). Lonely Goat RC’s young Ethan Tempest (30.20). Paul Bone (30.29). Kimberley Attrill (32.13). Terry Brown (32.51). Diane Read (34.31). Tara Aver (38.08).
Great work Joanne Oxley (Bruno) who admitted not feeling up to Parkrun this morning but is so happy she did because along with her running buddy this morning Lizzie Sparrow helped her to achieved a superb New Personal Best of 39.40. Ellie-May Beeton (41.24) and Andrea Sullivan (41.27).
Kath Gerighty gave the First Timers briefing, while Don Abeysekera as Run Director did really well giving his first ever main Parkrun Briefing.
Ruth Feltell who always loves running the parkrun thoroughly enjoyed her new role as tail walker and ensured that Camilla Cheung completed her 112th Parkrun, while Caity Ross had returned after an absence of 3 months still recorded a very impressive time of 34.28.
Superwoman herself Lisa Long (Redman) who usually runs every event that’s going, has been recovering from an operation herself was for the consecutive Saturday volunteering and did an excellent job as the Funnell Manager.
There are many unsung heroes who not only run or walk the Parkrun but work tirelessly behind scenes including our amazing organisers and volunteers and there were more than usual this morning because of the change and expansion of the course.
So take a bow you amazing Hi-Viz warriors – Kath and Terry Gerighty, Amanda Murfitt, Camilla Cheung, Don Abeysekera, Marion Leonard, James Fisher, John McGivern, Rachel Dray, Gill and Mike Davis, Stephen Biddle, James and Poppy Lee, Cathy Gibb-de Swarte, Lucie Melen, Lisa Redman, Caity Ross, John Lagrue, Ben Cook, Debbie Fisher. Breda Walton, and Ruth Feltell.

Mud but no rugby – Justin Smith

Event 72, 2nd November 2019

As per mentioned at today’s event brief, we should all be proud of ourselves when we get out of bed early and turn up for parkrun on a Saturday morning: we deserve even more kudos when it is wet, windy, muddy, and we are missing part of the rugby! The Run Directors were craning their necks in giraffe-like-fashion to watch runners in the distance as they entered the muddy drove: it looked like fun! We were jealous! The wonderful Cathy Gibb-de-Swarte ran with a huge flag, in order to celebrate the rugby and run! She looked rather grandiose what with the flag and the mud on her face!

The amazing Lisa Long supported the event as tail walker today, despite some recent surgery: she is amazing. Also amazing is Lauren Thomas, who celebrated her 50th parkrun: Lauren baked cakes (they were brilliant) and managed to enter the funnel as first lady finisher, despite the enormous helium-filled balloon the Run Director insisted she tied to herself! It was fantastic to see John McGivern back from his travels and on the course with his camera again! Thank you to all who undertook volunteer roles, with a special mention to the new volunteers, who were there to learn the roles and experience the fun!

98 tough runners ran at Littleport today.

We had 9 first-timers today, and some of field clearly had eaten their morning porridge, as we had 6 impressive personal bests! Fantastic!

The play list for music corner was inspired!

A massive thank you to today’s volunteers!

Thank you again, Littleport parkrun for supporting a future new event by hosting a second volunteer takeover!

Well done to all who took part!

Now for the stats!

26.10.19.2

26.10.19.3

What a superb event for the hardy lot who turned up for Littleport parkrun in intermittent rain, wind, and guaranteed mud! This week the volunteers were by and large a takeover team for a new parkrun, starting at a town not so far away, soon! Rob and Jon led the event today, and we all celebrated the legend that is Andrew Scarlett: it was his 250th parkrun today! Let’s not even get into how many different parkruns this chap has ran! Congratulations, Andrew!

99 runners ran today, contending with the wind (especially on the back meadow) and the fun bit (the increasingly muddy drove)! The pacers today were Martin Lewis (35 mins), Andrew Scarlett (30 mins) and Justin Smith (25 mins): it was lovely when people thanked the pacers after the event: it is a rewarding volunteer role! The amazing Cathy provided loud verbal encouragement along with sharp photography skills!

We had 18 first-timers today and 17 personal bests! Fantastic!

Anyone who ran this week deserves huge respect: it was tough on that drove and the wind on that back meadow as we headed back to the gate, well, there were some expletives muttered under the breath!

A massive thank you to today’s volunteers!

Thank you, Littleport parkrun for supporting a future new event by hosting a volunteer takeover!
