Littleport parkrun is cancelled on 2021-04-24 – COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

This weeks run report thank you Lucie.

This week’s parkrun, Littleport’s 70th, was remarkably…unremarkable!

Although the new PA was working well and the run briefing was beautifully clear, no one owned up to any milestones or birthdays! Only one tourist made themselves known, and the run was soon underway.

The ground was wet underfoot but the weather stayed dry, and a select 139 of us slipped and slid our way around the course. There were 15 visiting Littleport for the first time, and 4 doing their first ever recorded parkrun. Welcome to the community, Stephen and Leo AISH, Mark SMITH and Michael GARLAND, and welcome back to the further 7 who were doing their 2nd. There were only 3 “unknown” runners this week - aren’t we all doing well at not forgetting our barcodes! #DFYB

Despite the warning that with the mud, today was not a “PB day”, 9 people managed to record a new PB, so many congratulations to them! Congratulations also to junior Connie ABRAHAM, who ran her 10th parkrun, earning her first t-shirt. Half way to his first official milestone is Mark BENNETT, who ran his 25th today, and Lisa FORREST is on 49 so we look forward to congratulations next week perhaps?

At the bottom of our parkrun results page it gives our statistics, including the total distance covered by all runners ever at Littleport parkrun. This is 63005km, which is a long way. But just how far IS that, in “real” terms? Well, it’s just over one and a half times round the earth, which has a circumference of around 40000km. But even that is difficult to comprehend. To break it down further, the 139 people today covered 695km. This would get us to almost the Northern tip of Scotland, or just past Hamburg, depending on the direction we chose. Our record attendance is 308, which takes us all the way to Rome! So it’s remarkable in fact, what a lot we can achieve when we put all our efforts together…

…Just like the weekly parkrun event, which is only made possible by the combined efforts of the volunteers. Thank you to them all for giving their time and energy to help the event take place. Why don’t you add your effort to the cause next week? This week’s volunteers were:

Lauren THOMAS • Robert POPE • Gayle TEMPEST • Kath GERIGHTY • Emma READER • Jenny JEFFREYS • James LEE • Jeremy READER • Justin SMITH • Andrew RANDS • Emma DAVIS • John LAGRUE • Cathy GIBB DE SWARTE • Poppy LEE • Jo WHITE • Michelle TILBROOK • James ELVIN • Susan GREEN • Peter GREEN • Melanie DRAPER • Don ABEYSEKERA

Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Littleport parkrun Results Page.

The sun battled with the Autumn chill early on, helping to show the course at its best, especially to our longer distance visitors from Shrewsbury, Whitstable and Dunstable helping them and others enjoy our run here in Littleport. This appears to have worked well for Tina, a Shropshire shuffler who gave us a new age grade record, well done!
Although the morning warmed it couldn’t put an amazing 56 off achieving a new personal best!
Although Ali MACDONALD Didn’t quite manage a personal best, it was close. He didn’t need to be any faster finishing first place, his first one here at Littleport.

A mention also to Connie ABRAHAM who although still didn’t manage to reach her mum’s PB she’s gaining fast! Connie’s had an awesome few weeks of PB’s after starting parkrun at the beginning of the year. Watch out Debbie WILLIAMS.
We were joined by Tracey, Drew and Oliver who were in the middle of a sprint triathlon - cycling 12.4 miles, a 3-mile run and a 750m swim to raising funds for East Anglia Teenage Cancer Trust.

With 208 people making it through the tunnel this week 29 for the first time, I can’t possibly mention every achievement. However I would also like to give a mention to all the extra runners & walkers who come to parkrun and don’t always make it to the end, for whatever reason, injury, illness or anything, don’t let it put you off. The best thing is you can always try again next week, or the next......

I wanted to give this a mention as my usual pacer didn’t feel well after the first lap this week, stopping before the small loop. My other daughter running with their dad was simply too tired after her first week at Primary school. We all achieved new PB’s last week so can’t be greedy. Don’t give up, try again next week!
After hearing the Ely Runners are taking part in the Round Norfolk Relay, I decided this was the week to offer my support to parkrun. I’ve only been running since June when I joined the Ely Runners Beginners course, then I came to the Littleport parkrun Birthday party. I have been supported by members of the parkrun family when I’ve needed a bit of extra encouragement, I never expected Runner’s to be so friendly!

Hearing Soham could soon be starting parkrun, I had been thinking it seemed a good time to find out what’s actually involved in volunteering as they will need some help too!

I arrived early to see if I could be any help, knowing writing this was one of the only roles left on the rosta... joining the 4 other new volunteers this week and taking the total to 289 who have volunteered at littleport parkrun, this is my way of saying Thank You to Parkrun and the coaches at Ely Runners!
There are many roles to help with so do take a look at the list and sign your self up to help. Some roles are easier than you might think and with some you still get to have your run!

Event 64, 7th September 2019

You experience parkrun from a totally different angle as Run Director. You get to see the start, middle bits, volunteers fulfilling their roles, and people pelting into the finish funnel! It’s brilliant, and you really appreciate what an amazing thing parkrun is, how family friendly things are, and how great Littleport parkrun's volunteers are!

Things felt a little ‘thin on the ground’ numbers-wise as Kath Gerighty did the first timers' briefing, but, as is often the case, plenty of people were still streaming up the path to the Leisure Centre. In fact, when you include a few people who legged it to the start after everyone had set off, there was dead on 200 runners today!

At the event brief we celebrated Kath Gerighty’s double milestone: 100 parkruns and 25 volunteer roles! Although Rob Pope ran his 101st parkrun today, he is very important to Littleport parkrun, so we celebrated his 100th run also! He also provided cake!

It was a joy wandering the course this morning and witnessing the enthusiasm marshals add to the proceedings! The funnel team were particularly encouraging, which really helps with those sprint finishes!

Thank you to Cathy Gibb-de-Swarte, provider of cake, for getting a bit of a jam going on in the bike sheds with cow bells and a tambourine! Thanks also Charlotte Sygmuta, Deputy Run Director, master of car parking, and provider of tunes on music corner!

Goodbye and good luck to Chris and Rachel Leach, who are leaving the area.

We saw a good number of first-timers this week, which seemed to be a week for PBs! 51 runners got PBs, and having chatted with a number of them, it would seem that for many, it was overall 5K PBs as well as for Littleport parkrun.

Now for the stats!

Cool, calm and collected – Lisa Forrest

63 - Littleport parkrun – Cool, Calm and Collected

Lisa report

What a lovely Saturday morning to be having a run, jog, ‘jeff’ or walk at Littleport parkrun. It was cooler than previous weeks with a nice breeze – perfect! We like to be kept on our toes regarding the course route, with an additional post in the turn to lap three making it a little tight – everyone coped admirably with the new arrangements.

Today we had a few tourists swell our numbers - from Huddersfield and Windsor – welcome one and all. We had a member of the parkrun 500 club – Dave Thomas and three members of the parkrun 250 club – Louise Galvin, John Richardson and Graham Chapman – unbelievable achievements one and all!

This morning we had a very respectable 199 runners, joggers and walkers enjoy the two- and a-bit lap route of Littleport Recreation Ground.

First across the line for the gents was Alex Seabright of Ely Runners in 17:52. First across the line for the ladies was Poppy Baddeley with 21:40 also of Ely Runners.

We had 48 PBs this morning and 26 people who were at Littleport parkrun for the first time. We also had 68 runners representing 15 clubs.

The event was made possible by 27 volunteers today (round of applause please):

Nik BANKS, Ben COOK, Matthew CRAMPHORN, Bethany CRAMPHORN, Thomas CRAMPHORN, Belinda CRAMPHORN, Ruth FELTELL, Lisa FORREST, Terry GERIGHTY, Kath GERIGHTY, Nicola GILBERT, Susan GREEN, Peter GREEN, John LAGRUE, Cara MACFARLANE, Clair Marie MACKNESS, John MCGIVERN, Lucie MELEN, Amanda MURFITT, Jonathan PRICE, Emma RHODES, Hannah SANDERSON, Adrian SCAITES-STOKES, Joshua SCOTT, Justin SMITH, Charlotte SYGMUTA, Breda WALTON.

Dog show, heat and the Ely Runners beginners – Justin Smith

Event 62, 24th August 2019
ER beginners

This week we shared the grounds around the Leisure Centre with a Dog Show, a big one! Amanda, our intrepid Event Director spent some time in the evening talking with the dog show organiser, as well as taking a look the night before. Of course, the organiser of the show and all concerned were lovely, and actions were taken to ensure the safety of parkrun participants as well as those enjoying the show! On the morning of the event the Run Director for the day decided that we would press ahead: the groundwork for this happy decision had been done by Amanda!

We were briefed by the ever-witty and parkrun-addicted Charlotte, who made sure we all knew what we needed to given we were sharing the grounds with others.

It was a special event today, as the most recent graduates from the Ely Runners Beginners’ course showed up to run, and they were supported by their coaches and plenty of club members: well done to them all! They have enjoyed many a PB of late! It has to be said, that for many of the participants of the most recent beginners course, the fact that they had already been running at Littleport must have contributed in some way towards their progress. Well done to all of them, and thank you to their dedicated coaches.

Extra marshals had been organised for the event given that we were sharing the Leisure Centre Grounds, and they did an amazing job with a big turn out, ensuring that there were no dog/ runner type incidents! As is often the case at this popular parkrun, the run down the path at the start was busy! Did I mention it was hot? We had the usual high number of children turn up today, which is amazing, as it is such a family-focussed event; and of course we had the usual dogs, who were no doubt watched by many a pair of canine eyes from the dog show on the grounds! As always, we should be grateful to the organisers and marshals!

Here’s the stats!

This week 224 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 32 were first timers and 36 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 17 different clubs took part.
