The parkrun fairy was on good form today, ensuring that no rain would fall before or during today's event , for which we were very grateful.
88 parkrunners journeyed down to the lakeside this morning to run, jog or walk the course. The little competition in Japan may have kept a few people at home, whilst others may have been resting up for the Cardiff Half Marathon tomorrow. They missed the almost ideal running conditions which pulled personal best performances from 18 of us this morning. No age category records were broken but SW30-34 Faye Johnson from Spirit of Monmouth not only crossed first for the female categories but her 19:50 time got her into the all time fastest 500 in position 188. SM30-34 Jonathan Gentle's PB of 21:46 got him in at slot 469. Well done both.
Three of our parkrunners, including our first finisher, were unknown today. Please remember your barcode as we all find it sad when your achievements are not recorded. #RYB.
This meant that we may have had more than eight first timers and possibly more than just one newcomer. Welcome to VM40-44 Neil Simmons on what might be your first steps on a long and enjoyable parkrun journey. There were 11 different clubs represented in the field. We acknowledged a couple of milestones today as Michaela Richardson and Rhian Maw joined the 50 club. They ran together and Rhian celebrated with a PB.
Roger Ford also made it to the red t-shirt mark but just missed a pb by two seconds! VM65-69 Dave Dibbell can look forward to a new black t-shirt after notching up his 100th run today whilst one of our younger throng JM11-14 Robin Grant ran his 10th senior parkrun and can look forward to a new white shirt. Congratulations all. .
I love the different stories and reasons people have for joining parkrun. It's always a pleasure to see the mix at Lydney. It was great to see regular stalwart Sandra Hawkins on barcode scanning whilst Gary Burley was stepping in for a spot of timekeeping as he rested his legs for tomorrow's jaunt round the Welsh Capital. Lily Robinson has come back to parkrun, having started her journey with jpr and not recalling it too favourably, and now enjoys helping out with set up before running and then going off to work. As parkrun spreads throughout the area there is a greater need for more people to come forward and assist. If you can step in then you will be welcome at whatever event you help and receive the grateful thanks from the team. All training needed will be given and it really is good fun.
Our thanks go this week to: Amelia WARREN • Andrew LONG • David PRICE • Gary BURLEY • Grace WARREN • Lily ROBINSON • Lynda KNIGHT • Mark HARVEY • Mark WILLIAMSON • Nick ASSIRATI • Rebecca WARREN • Rick WARREN • Sandra HAWKINS • Spencer WARD • Victoria SIMS
I had a jolly outing this morning and was very pleased to note that there were no puddles on the tarmac the mud wasn't too slippy in the woods and the log jump was not as high as I had remembered. I do love this course. In my head it's a game of three halves...Start with run out and first loop.....second loop....then third loop with run back to the finish. I like to keep a little bit in the tank to open up along the lakeside to the funnel once the sticky bits are all finished. The plan worked today and it was great fun. It was good to see so many friendly faces and hear the ongoing encouragement from the fantastic marshals out and about the course. Thanks everyone for adding to the experience.
Today's first three for the ladies were the aforementioned Faye Johnson; VW45-49 Sue Lomax, who recorded 25:16 and JW15-17 Ella Knight who finished in 25:41.
For the men the first three recorded were SM30-34 William Read in 20:42, VM65-69 Graham Worthy in 21:26 and JM11-14 Robin Grant in 21:28
The top three age grades came from Graham, who scored 78.23%; from Faye, who scored 74.71% and I managed a 70.94% for a time of 22:32 as a VM60-64
