Event #200 – Something of a milestone?

Some 4 years and 1 week later we've hit 200 events!!! Where did all that time go? If you've been a regular over this time you'll have seen the number of participants steadily grow from about 100 each week to more like 250-300 as we get now with over 7,300 people clocking up a whopping 192,485km over 38,497 runs/jogs/walks.

This week 262 of you took part and someone among you recorded our 7,500th PB since event #1 (woop!)

Not only that, but we received an amazing number of donated food bank items for the Trussell Trust - more on that later!

We also had loads of first timers which is always great to see.. Here they are listening intently to Wilhelmina's briefing.. Many will not have appreciated how important the "First Timer" briefing has become... since it's often the very first point of contact with parkrun it's crucial we're seen to be welcoming and inclusive so that first time participants have the most positive experience possible!

Then and Now

2015-10-03-09-04-54-hodge66-0

As far as we can tell, or rather according to Neal... There's a small group of intrepid runners and volunteers who were present at both event #1 and #200! They are:

Emma WATSON
Ruth GORDON
Daniel MILLER
Neal BLOUNT
John PFEIL
Ian WEST
Dave DEAN
Louise HOLDEN
Rachael MANSFIELD
Maggie CHAPMAN
Amanda EVERITT
Sarah HAMPSHIRE
Robert HAMPSHIRE
Brian BROOKS
Callum BROOKS
Tracy BROOKS

So a very well done and thank you to them for sticking with us! Of course there are also the thousands that came after and continue to make Malling parkrun part of their weekly health and wellbeing routine, so again another well deserved "well done"!

Old Photos
Should you wish to reminisce about parkruns gone by.. why not have a look at these photo albums? Most of these were originally on Flickr and then moved over to Google last year:

Food Collection
Following the moving item in our run report last week we were amazed by the generous donations we received for the Trussell Trust.

JEM_8280

We received this thank you from Trussell Trust project manager Lorraine:

"Huge thanks to all at parkrun Malling for collecting for us at their recent run. We rely completely upon donations of food, and your kind support will help those who are struggling.

We are currently seeing a 22% increase in usage of our foodbank centres. This appears to mainly be due to problems with the Universal Credit system, but also people who are on very low or irregular wages.

Last year we fed 5835 people, with over 2000 of those being children. We work with local professional agencies e.g. social services, health teams, schools, churches and other charities to identify those in need, and to build in signposting support as part of our referral process.

All of our food goes to our warehouse and we transport around 1 tonne of food a week around the surrounding towns. We need both food and funds so any support is always very much appreciated.

THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPPORT!"

So if you donated something last week, give yourself a big pat on the back. You've done something small, but totally brilliant to make someone's life better when they really needed it!

Christmas Day event
We're really hoping to put on an event this Christmas Day... but this can only happen if we get sufficient volunteers. Please get in touch if you fancy trying a bit Christmas volunteering!

Looking forward
To ensure a strong and sustainable future for the next 200 events it's essential that we continue to grow our "core team" and in particular recruit additional run directors. Currently we have three regular RD's and ideally we'd love a couple more - if you, a friend or family member might be interested in taking volunteering to the next level please get in touch.
