Mersea Island parkrun is cancelled on 30 May 2020: COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Mersea Island parkrun – Event # 166 – 14 March 2020

On an appropriately damp and dull morning, Coronavirus was on everybody's lips. There was talk that this could be the last event for a while. Social distancing was a new phrase starting to be spoken, but in spite of the gloom, almost 100 people turned up to run, walk and volunteer. There was already talk of what we might do if parkrun is cancelled and the sense that we will make the most of whatever fate throws us.

Event #162 – 08 February 2020

Once again it was a joy to meet together as a community of parkrunners this week. We used the winter course again and, although we do like this course, we are keen to get back to the normal route as soon as possible.

On March 7th we will be celebrating International Women's Day with a specially themed parkrun. We endeavour to form an all-female volunteer team, encourage new runners and walkers, and wear purple (the international colour for this special day). All genders are welcome, but it would be lovely to welcome lots of new participants, particularly women. Look out for our This Girl Can posts on Facebook (@merseaislandparkrun).

Event #160 – 25 January 2020

Mersea Island parkrun - Event number 160 - 25th January 2020

The gentle sound of electronic tags rubbing against ankles, combined with the subtle yet unmistakable aroma of creme de menthe in the crisp winter air, was the reminder, if one were needed, that Running Colchester were joining us for parkrun #160.

Once the briefing was expertly announced, and our pacers physically turned around to ensure that they were facing the right direction, the countdown was completed and our running, jogging and walking began.

It was a lovely event to watch, with our winter course being put to good use, enabling the sizeable army of volunteers to watch the action from most vantage points on the route. Most pacers successful finished within five minutes of their target times, and 154 parkrunners did themselves proud. Well done everybody, you are all amazing!

(Running Colchester are superstars. They are wonderfully inclusive, and a fantastically supportive group of runners. Come back soon, we love welcoming you Mersea Island! :-) )
