Where has the time gone?

On the 28th November we celebrated our 200th event. What a great journey it has been from the 63 runners at our inaugural in February 2012. By week two the numbers dropped to 26 and took several months to average over 50. We did hit 100 on our first anniversary and have had in excess of 200 on three occasions. To celebrate the 200th event we had pacers - many supplied by GoodGym. All the photos - thanks Alex - can be found at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/mileend/photos/

Over Christmas there are extra opportunities to run parkruns. At Mile End we will be having all the usual Saturday runs but no extras:

19th Dec Christmas parkrun - wear your santa hat or christmas jumper
26th Dec usual run
1st Jan - looking at doing the double. Either Grovelands or Hampstead Heath followed by Oak Hill
2nd Jan usual run
6th Feb - 4th birthday celebrations

Thanks to all the volunteers who have made this event possible. There is now a club tshirt for volunteers. A lovely purple t-shirt gained after volunteering at 25 events.

First Birthday – the thank you run report

Well what an amazing first birthday. We beat our target of 100 runners, parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt took part, and gave out prizes and the carrot cake was excellent.

Lots of thanks – to the volunteers who have turned up in all weathers to marshal, tail run, time and scan. We have had great help in setting up each week – and taking down. There have been photographers and even the occasional human turning cone. Today we had extra helpers who came along just to be part of Mile End parkrun today and lent a hand with the cakes and directing to the stadium. This weeks helpers were Carole BOYLE  •  Christina EASON  •  Claire TUFFIN  •  Craigie-Lee PATERSON  •  Heather HODGE  •  Lachlan MURRAY  •  Mary BURKETT  •  Pat REID  •  Rebecca MOLYNEUX  •  Sally MILLS  •  Sophie MINTER  •  Stephanie HOCKETT  and  Tracei POMPEY

We anticipated finding volunteers each week as being potentially one of the most stressful parts on event directing but it hasn’t been. Most weeks the rota is filled for at least the following week with slots filled weeks ahead. But don’t stop we still need volunteers to add to the data base. Just email mileendhelpers@parkrun.com

Thanks to Mile End stadium – manager Nick and his team who open up for us early on a Saturday and store our equipment. We do appreciate the facilities!

Thanks to coffee Mike who turns up every week with his coffee 2 U van and son Scott. We do enjoy hot drinks in winter and the occasional free sandwich.

Thanks to Sweatshop who provide trainers for the monthly winners and vouchers. We have had 11 winners over the last year: they are

Feb             Annie Walker
Mar            Matthew Wise
April           Mary Davies
May           Scott Summers
June           Richard Craven
July             Kathryn Mycock
Aug            Helen Button
Sept           Matthew Button
Oct             Jeff Martin
Nov            Christina Eason
Dec             Paul Boddey

Thanks to parkrun HQ who have guided us through the result process particularly in the early days when we did have some issues. The backup is fantastic allowing runners to get their result shortly after finishing.

This week’s cake and the prizes were only possible due to the donations we have had over the last year. We hope the donors felt it was money well spent. We will use the fund to replace equipment when required. You can find out how to donate here

http://www.parkrun.org.uk/aboutus/donations/

The points competition runs over the year for each parkrun: Runners are separated into their sexes and allocated points based on the position that they finish. The first woman to cross the line will receive 100 points. The second will receive 99 and this tally will reduce until each runner only gets a point. This is repeated for the men. Volunteers are allocated maximum points on the day that they volunteer up to three times per year. More information can be found here http://support.parkrun.com/entries/22041167-how-does-the-points-competition-work

26th January:Ice didn’t stop us!

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since our first test event. We have met so many people and made some good friends.  In that time 843 runners have completed 3005 runs. There have been 52  first finishers and 15,025 km have been covered. Our highest attendance was 83 and the average turn out was 57.8.  Year 2 is going to be even bigger and we would love to start with 100 runners at our first birthday next week. So start recruiting friends, family and work colleagues.  There will be cake and Mike will be on hand with hot drinks. We plan to hold the prize giving in the stand at the stadium so even if the weather isn’t good we will be sheltered.

So onto this week – despite the icy conditions there were 9 PBs including Mile End regulars Jeff Martin and Heather Hodge.

Men's placings:
Sean RENFER (SM20-24) of Thames Valley Harriers, was first over the line in 16:20 - third time in 3 appearances.
Andrew FARGUS (SM30-34) of Thames Hare & Hounds, was second over the line in 17:11 - Was first to finish once before.
Moussa TRAORE (SM20-24) of East End Road Runners, was third over the line in 17:43 - Was first to finish once before.

Event #50

Well another fantastic turnout and no snow- great start to a dreary weekend. Parkrun tourist Ian Shorthouse commented ’ Loving the dual carriageway layout and not an ounce of mud on the course, bliss. Very scenic.’

Another runner – sorry I didn’t get your name -was surprised that we had only been going since last February. She came along in April for the first time and everyone was so friendly she thought we had been going for years.
There were lots of familiar faces with the Buttons out in force and Mathew Wise coming in first – again. The points competition is just about decided with only 2 more events to go there is little doubt who will in the top three male and female winners though the order may change – watch this space.

Sophie BUTTON (Unattached) 3241 pts.
Lucy BUTTON (Unattached) 3175 pts.
Helen BUTTON (Women Running at E14) 2765 pts

Matthew WISE (Unattached) 3667 pts.
Paul BODDEY (Unattached) 2842 pts.
William MCKEEVER (Unattached) 2812 pts

The points prizes with be awarded at our first birthday on the 2nd February. There will be cake and Mike will be on hand to provide coffee and other hot drinks. So plan to linger after that week’s event and you will see the prizes awarded. In case the weather isn’t kind to us we plan to hold it in the stand at the track. Our goal is to reach 100 runners on that day so make a date in your diary persuade friends and family to come along too- it’s an achievable goal with your help

We had a fantastic response to the email call for volunteers and with people signing up on the day too – there are only 5 slots left to fill in the next 5 weeks. This week’s helpers were Amanda WOBY • Amman SARANG • Carole BOYLE • Helen BUTTON • Jane DENNYSON • Johnny FLAHAVAN • Mary BURKETT and Sophie BUTTON

So the results
Women's placings:
Christina EASON (SW30-34) (Unattached) was first (23rd overall) over the line in 22:31 - third time in 13 appearances.Kate COLLINS (SW30-34) (Unattached) was second (25th overall) over the line in 22:41.Jael BILLY (SW30-34) of Serpentine RC, was third (27th overall) over the line in 23:04 - Has been first to finish on 2 previous occasions.

Event #46 15th December 2012

Hi all. Well done everyone today who turned up, as we were reminded, Friday was the most popular evening for Xmas parties!!

A special mention for Christine Eason who was the sweatshop winner of the month and who now has a nice pair of purple trainers to help her with her marathon training and also to our first time MileEnders

Our first women in were Emma WITHYCOMBE (21:56) her first appearance, Kate COLLINS (23:39) and Becky GREENWOOD (24:00).
Lachlan MURRAY (17:15) came in first for the men (2nd time in 5 appearance) quickly followed by Julian HAZELDINE (17:34) and Joe WILLIAMS (17:54).

We are having a seasonal get together on Wednesday 19th at The Morgan Arms (about 5 mins walk from Mile End tube) from 7.30pm. The full details are on our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mile-End-parkrun). It'll be a great opportunity to meet up with everyone in the warm and dry, I hope lots of us will be able to make it.

We have parkrun next week so looking forward to seeing you then and also on the 29th. We are looking for volunteers in the new year so please do sign up. Of course a thanks to all today esp our young marshal Charlie Dutnall (see picture on facebook).

See you all next week , we might even have a visit from Santa :)

Run report 8th Dec 2012

Georgie Manly, Felicity Paterson and Kate Collins came in first second and third for the women. This was Georgie's second run with us and already making an impact.
Both the first and second men were first timers to Mile End so welcome and congratulations on your good times; we hope to see you back and giving Matthew Wise a run for his money - Matthew came in 3rd today but is often in the leading pack.
In the points table we have all 3 'Button' ladies at the top which I think is quite amazing.
We've got volunteers scheduled in for our next couple of runs but please do come forward for other dates. We have heard that the stadium will be open between Xmas and New Year so there are runs scheduled in every week through to the New Year and beyond.
We'll soon be approaching our first birthday so keep a look out for news of a birthday party.
Come the cold weather it is always good to catch up after the run with a coffee; Mike is certainly making them with very special additions at the moment.
Christine Ohuruogu and friends were out running again today; you never know one day they might just join us.
Once again abject apologies for our timing errors today - I promise to do better next week; see you all there

Mary (RD)

Run Report #44

It's tough enough for most people just to win a Park Run, but for Paul Martelletti it can be done even when giving the other runners a two-minute head start. Paul, was running late (boom, boom) on Saturday, but it made no difference as he chased down the other 71 runners to win in a time of 17.09. What made his chase all the more remarkable is that the second placed runner Lachlan Murray completed the two-lap Mile End course in a time of 17.17.

This week there were 72 runners, of whom 12 were first timers and 18 recorded new personal bests. Representatives of 11 different athletics clubs took part.

Men's placings:
Paul Martelletti - 17.09 - 5th time in 5 appearances
Lachlan Murray - 17.17 - has been first to finish once before
Matthew Wise - 18.19 - has been first to finish on 15 previous occasions

Women's placings
Jude Dutnall - 21.55 - second time in 4 appearances
Catherine Needham - 23.03
Jael Billy - 23.22 - was first to finish once before.

A big thank you to this week's heroes, the volunteers who brave the cold icy conditions to enable this run to happen:Chris Carter, Christina Eason, Emma Button, Ewan Debarra, Joe Williams, Neil Chippington, Sharron Rooney

A special thanks to Carole Boyle, Claire Tuffin and Richard Woollis who all helped out with the set up this week.

And where would the day be without Mike our friendly coffee man who,was on hand to serve those well deserved hot drinks post run, with something extra special to keep you warm Ian those cold winter days. I shall be leaving my car at home next weekend so I can have a shot of amaretto in my coffee to keep me warm.

Have a good week everybody and see you all again on Saturday for your run and festive fun.

Sharron RD
