Mole Valley Runners parkrun takeover – 23rd November 2019 (by Louise Sutherland)

Saturday morning saw over 40 Mole Valley Runners either volunteering or running at Mole Valley parkrun. We had marshals from 3 years old to 63 years old, and many in between, all keen to lend a hand and cheer on the runners and timekeep, token sort, and even take the weekly photos.

We had Martha and Eddie with mum Hannah cheering on Dad along with the rest of the runners, regular volunteer Molly and mum Lucinda were on hand cheering too, as were Jacob, Mya and mum Sara, Teddy and Issy and mum Becci. Debbie the founder of MVR was there too along with her daughter Francesca. What’s great is that many of these children are now running the Leatherhead Junior parkrun on Sundays, so it was a brilliant opportunity for them to give back and support others.

Molly has formed a great friendship with Harry, one of the veteran Mole Valley parkrun runners (who holds the age grade course record), and was very upset when he took a tumble near her on Saturday. Thankfully, several of the MVR volunteers are first aid trained run leaders and were on hand to look after Harry while they waited for the ambulance to come and give him a good check over. The good news is he is fine, so will be back running again soon!

There were a lot of slips and slides, and muddy knees and bottoms by the end of the run due to the very inclement weather, so it was impressive to see 252 people turn up ready to run. 37 were first timers and 7 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 30 different clubs took part.

If anyone would like to know more about Mole Valley Runners, which is an England Athletics affiliated social running club, run purely by volunteers, please take a look at our facebook page www.facebook.com/groups/MoleValleyRunners/ and website www.molevalleyrunners.co.uk We have group runs on Monday and Thursday mornings in Bookham and Effingham, a Wednesday lunch time run from the Wooton Hatch Pub, and evening runs on Monday in Dorking, Tuesday in Bookham, Wednesday in Leatherhead and Thursday in Ashtead.
