Saturday 17th March 2018 saw the first Mole Valley parkrun take place. Over two years in the making, it was a highly anticipated event!
A bit of background as to how our parkrun started….Mole Valley District Council were very keen to get a parkrun in their area and kindly provided the required funding but despite plenty of green spaces, we struggled to find a suitable venue for parkrun. Who knew that large car parks and non-bridleway paths were so hard to come-by! It was finally Denbies Wine Estate to the rescue after they gave us permission to use their land - and what a perfect parkrun location it is. A scenic 1-lap route through the vineyard with a beautiful view of Box Hill although slightly obscured today with the weather. Thank you to all of those who have made Mole Valley parkrun happen - two years of persistence was definitely worth it!
On to Saturday’s run. After sending off the 354 runners for their 5km run in the snow, it was a great sight to see the long line of runners running up the hill and across the vineyard. We didn’t have to wait long for the first finisher, Ollie Garrod, to arrive back in 17:38 – a very impressive time considering the hills and a high benchmark for the course record! First female finisher was Heather Paterson in 22:12 – a great time, well done!
As the runners came through, a great atmosphere built up at the finish line. Feedback from the field was that it was a tough course with a cold biting wind but thoroughly enjoyable, with great support from the marshals throughout. The downhill second half was also a much-needed relief after the uphill climbs in the first half. After running/walking the course several times over the last few months, I’m looking forward to running the course in a parkrun soon!
An amazing 67 people took part in their first ever parkrun – we hope you enjoyed it and will be back again soon! Congratulations to those who achieved milestones today:
- Our first finisher Ollie Garrod: 250 runs
- Daniel Bye: 200 runs (no t-shirt but instead a nice home-made sign from his sister)
- Michael Rebera and Steven Alder: 100 runs
- Matthieu Michel: 50 runs
I look forward to many more Mole Valley parkruns with you all. Don’t forget to sign up to volunteer by emailing email@example.com.
