Christmas and New Year at Newport parkrun

We have laid out our Christmas and New Year's plans below and do hope that you'll be able to join our festive celebrations this year! Don't forget, for any of the below events to go ahead we do need volunteers so please email on if you help on any of the below dates.

Saturday 17th December 2016: please join us for our annual festive sing-along with coffee and mince pies after this parkrun event. We'll be upstairs in the brewhouse from 10am (ish) on this day and would love for you to join us!

Saturday 24th December 2016: Christmas Eve is a usual parkrunday, and we're having a special festive themed event!

Sunday 25th December 2016: We will be parkrunning at Newport at 9am. We do need volunteers in order that this event can go ahead so please message us if you can help this morning, and wear your best festive outfits!

If you're not in Newport on Christmas Day but still wish to parkrun, then take a look at the Christmas Compendium, as there might be an event up and running wherever you happen to be this Christmas.

Saturday 31st December 2016: parkrunday as usual.

Sunday 1st December 2017: New Years parkrunday!
We are planning an extra parkrunday at 10:30am on New Years Day. We do need volunteers to make this happen, so if you do fancy lending a hand in the hi-vis then please let us know as soon as possible!

New Years Day is the only day in parkrunworld where you can record two runs on the same day. As an event team, we do not elicit/encourage people to go out of their way to record extra runs. If you do plan on completing a double, please take care especially when travelling between events. There is no rush, you can always start late and catch up with the tailrunners. We do hope you can join us After Cardiff's NYD parkrun at 9. if you're elsewhere in the country you can find a festive run near you by checking out the Christmas Compendium

parkrunning naked and free!

This Saturday coming (6th Feb) should be our monthly pacer week, where a number of runners from our local clubs pace you around our parkrun course to a potential PB. This week however, due to the fact that so many of our wonderful volunteers are assisting in putting on the event and guiding our couch to 5k groups around, we've decided to make this a naked week.

Not naked naked, there will be no streaking allowed, just naked of technology and gadgets that many of us normally use to get us around the 5k each week. This week is all about getting out there and just running, going with the natural cues of your body that you might otherwise miss if you're, like me, singing along to bad pop songs or going faster/slower based on the pacing cues of your watch or phone.

Just turn up and run - leave behind your devices and gain a new respect for your parkrunning efforts!

Newport parkrun family day

This is the season of giving, of families and friends and in our house at least, of competiveness over a Monopoly board! We thought we'd bring this to parkrun and challenge you this Boxing Day, our 250th event, to bring along as many members of your family as possible, to help celebrate this incredible milestone for Newport parkrun.

We have seen over the course of the last 250 events our little parkrun family grow and grow and we’d like to celebrate this with you and your family. Whether you run with your son, daughter, nephews, nieces, mum and dad, husband or wife, brothers, sisters, aunties and uncles, grandparents or grandchildren – however your parkrun family is made up, we want them to come with you on Boxing Day to help us celebrate.

Bring your family along on Boxing Day to cheer, run or volunteer, and we’ll put together an album on our Facebook page to celebrate our families.

Photos in the album will be of the biggest family groups participating through a run (or walk around the course) volunteering or simply cheering everyone on. Bring your family along from 8:30am in order to get a photo captured!

With love and Christmas cheer, from our parkrun family to yours, this Christmas!

Christmas comes to Newport parkrun

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Newport parkrun and plans are already in place between ourselves and Cardiff parkrun (Blackweir) to enable you to run 5 parkruns over the course of Christmas week:

  • Christmas Day: Extra parkruns at Newport and Blackweir (Cardiff) - both starting at 9am.
  • Boxing Day: All parkruns planning to go ahead as usual from 9am.
  • New Year's Day 9am: Blackweir (Cardiff) and then run at 10:30am at either Newport or Barry Island.
  • 2nd January: All parkruns planning to go ahead as usual from 9am.

There will be a theme to our fancy dress on Saturday 19th December, which is... Christmas! You are of course welcome to continue this theme through Christmas morning and Boxing Day.

Assuming we can fill the volunteer roster for Christmas Day, then Boxing Day will be the 250th Newport parkrun event. We'd like you to help us celebrate this brilliant milestone and we'll be announcing how you can join in, very soon!

We really need volunteers to step up and help us put all the events on around Christmas. You can see the future volunteer roster here and we'd be very grateful, as would the runners, if we could start to fill this up now. Email us on if you can help out at any event.

Christmas and New Year’s Day at Newport parkrun

Subject to finding enough willing volunteers, we are delighted to announce that Newport parkrun will be putting on Christmas morning and New Year's Day events.

There will be the possibility of running 5 parkrun's in 8 days as Boxing Day (26th Dec) and 2nd January are Saturday's when a standard Newport parkrun will be taking place and Cardiff parkrun also planning on holding a New Year's Day parkrun at 9am.

Please let us know if you will be able to help out on either of the extra dates as soon as you are able - we already know we have Run Directors in place for both events but would like a few more names on the list before we know these events can definitely go ahead!

If you are able to volunteer, please email us on with the date(s) you're available and your barcode number. Please know that your offer and time is very much appreciated by everyone at Newport parkrun.

Halloween spooktacular at Newport parkrun

Join us for a Halloween 'spook-tacular' on Saturday 31st October when we invite you to come along in Halloween fancy dress for the scariest run of the year! Come along and embrace the Halloween spirit by dressing up for this event, whether witch, warlock, walking dead or simply just the straight out of bed look!

Not for the faint hearted, Newport parkrun will be turned over to the ghosts, ghouls and creatures of the night as you stomp, crawl, sleep-walk and shriek your way around the 5k course.

The fancy dress option is open to both runners and volunteers and we hope to see you embrace your dark side and run like your life depends upon it!

Most importantly don't forget your broomstick, sorry barcode! #dfyb

As announced at the last two parkruns, Newport City Council are organising a free family fun day out at Tredegar House called "Parklife" (no connection with parkrun).

There will be fun stalls, dance, arts & crafts, sports, play sessions, face painting, plus much more.

The parkrun core team will be there to promote Newport parkrun at the invitation of Newport City Council, who are the co-sponsors of our weekly parkrun.

If you do attend we would be delighted to see you on the parkrun stand.

Volunteers Needed!

Why not try volunteering & being part of the Newport parkrun team.

In particular if you fancy taking a few snaps we'd like to hear from you. Alternatively if you are a first aider we always need cover for our resident first aid volunteers.

If you are just happy to help, we can fit you in to our now experienced team as a tokens marshal, a bar coder or out in the field as a race marshal.

Having a growing list of volunteers will ensure we can keep up the high standards for the Newport parkrun......and you will get points for the overall league table!
