Raindrops on noses and sunshine on faces, bright running clothing and nice tight shoe laces, excited parkrunners at the beginning of spring, these are a few of my favourite things!
There are lots of things I love about junior parkrun but my absolute favourite thing is that junior parkrun welcomes everyone, no matter what! Whether the aim is a super fast time, a walk and a chat with friends, or even whether you can hop the whole 2k – absolutely everyone is welcome to take part and have fun however they choose to.
Queen’s Park junior parkrun, Bolton became the 87th junior event to join the #parkrunfamily this week. The event held special significance as Bolton-based bakery brand Warburtons will be supporting us over the next three years as part of its community investment programme, Families Matter, to help grow junior parkrun, particularly in more disadvantaged areas of the country. So I have the exciting job of helping to set up new junior events and to encourage children and families from all walks of life to be welcomed along to their local junior parkrun.
Here’s a couple of things to think about and try out for yourself that will help spread the junior parkrun magic far and wide:
- Show people what junior parkrun is all about – You and I know what junior parkrun is like because we already go along and experience it first hand. But someone new might just need to see what it’s like before being persuaded to come along for the first time. Sharing your pictures and videos is a great way of showing the range of people and abilities taking part in junior parkrun and might just encourage someone new to give it a go!
- Share the love – Think back to how you first discovered junior parkrun – I’m betting it was because someone told you how great it was?! You have the power to do the same for someone else. Who else’s life could you enrich by telling them about junior parkrun. We challenge you to tell someone from outside your usual social circle about junior parkrun – maybe someone who you think would really benefit from from doing a free 2k run, jog or walk in the park.
As parkrun converts, you are our biggest advocates and champions and you can help us welcome new runners, joggers, walkers and volunteers.
Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much!
