The ground at Goddington park is very wet and muddy but there is currently not sufficient reason to cancel. The run director will review conditions in the morning and whilst the run will only be cancelled if deemed necessary, please be aware that it is a possibility.
Hello everyone. It's Steven Garden Event Director Orpington here. We've been given the opportunity to put together a volunteer baggage team for this year's Virgin Money London Marathon. Not only would volunteers get to experience the satisfaction of helping make one of the world's greatest marathons happen but we would also be offered a London Marathon 2015 place (perhaps even two) and a donation to our parkrun as an incentive. I need to be confident that there is enough interest before I can commit so spread the word and get in touch using the orpingtonhelpers@parkrun email address if you'd like to get involved. (You won't be committing at this point, only registering your interest.)
On Saturday the 21st of December we hope you'll join us for our last parkrun before Christmas. To celebrate, we're going to have a fancy dress run (with a prize for our favourite!), mince pies and soft drinks. I asked Santa if he would come along but I'm afraid he said something about 'tapering before a big event.'
There will not be an event at Orpington on Christmas Day or New Year's day. To check to see which parks are offering such runs please check the link below.
parkrun offers event organisers the option of running additional runs on Christmas Day and New Year's day. Orpington parkrun will not be putting on extra events. You can check parks that are at the link below. The nearest event that has declared a Christmas Day event is Bromley.
This Saturday is Orpington parkrun's 1st anniversary and we're hoping that you'll join us for the fun. We had some great suggestions for how to celebrate and so we're going to try to do as many as we can.
Running the course in reverse was the most popular suggestion so we'll be doing that, which means you'll get to see what the trees look like from the other side! Everyone who has volunteered at Orpington in the first year will be entered into a raffle and prizes will be given to the first three names drawn out of a hat. You've got to be there on the day though so don't miss out! For those doing the run, there will be a spot prizes allocated to random finishing tokens so everyone is in with a chance of winning something regardless of how fast they finish. We'll also be recognising the junior and senior leaders in the male and female points tables.
We'd love to see some fancy dress action going on, both from the volunteers and from the runners. I'm sure that you lot can manage a funny/fancy hat as a minimum! And finally we'd like to invite people to bring homemade cakes along on the day.
Help spread the word and hopefully we'll get a bumper turnout. In anticipation of this please car-share/cycle/walk/run to the park if you can to ease congestion in the car park.
Here is an abridged version of a message received from parkrun HQ (full version below):
.. we significantly underestimated the demand particularly for children specific sizes and for both men’s and women’s larger sized shirts. The current situation is that we are completely out of stock of the following sizes of shirt.
We have ordered new supplies but these are not instantly available. Almost all parkrun shirts are manufactured to order, usually in the far East. They are then shipped to Europe and eventually to the UK where they still have to be printed and eventually dispatched to UK events. This procedure takes around 90 days and so it is unlikely that we will have new stock to enable us to fulfill our backorders until around October 2013. We appreciate that this will be disappointing to those runners waiting for their Club T shirt but hope that you will assure them that the shirts will eventually be forthcoming.
A BIT OF INFORMATION REGARDING THE AVAILABILITY OF CLUB T SHIRTS
When Club T shirts were first introduced back in the days when Nike were a sponsor we offered four size options, all adult sizes since in those days the number of younger juniors was quite small. The styles were a little different for men and for women but we offered XS, S, M and L
When adidas came on board it was decided that we would widen the range of sizes to recognize that not every parkrunner could be accommodated within that range. Mostly this meant that we added bigger sizes to our range. Up to XXL for men and size 24 for women.
As parkrun has grown it has attracted more and more younger juniors and we began to get more and more enquiries for children specific sizes. The most recent additions to our size range that adidas were able to supply were shirts for children age 9/10 and 11/12.
The growth of parkrun has been exponential and our forecasting has always been based on historical experience with a percentage increase to acknowledge the anticipated future growth. When we increased our size range we had no basis for projecting how many runners would be requesting shirts in the newly available sizes.
The consequence of this is that we significantly underestimated the demand particularly for children specific sizes and for both men’s and women’s larger sized shirts. The current situation is that we are completely out of stock of the following sizes of shirt.
Age 9/10 and Age 11/12.
Low stock XS and size 8.
Women’s sizes 14, 16 and 18.
Low stock Men’s XS, S and L.
We appreciate that this will be disappointing to those runners waiting for their Club T shirt but hope that you will be able to explain the situation to them and assure them that the shirts will eventually be forthcoming. Possibly a note on your event webpage might be one way of communicating this.
When we send out shirts we do highlight those we are not able to include and recently we have included a note explaining why this is. However, it seems that the message is not always getting through to the Run Director or T shirt distributor as is proved by the number of enquiries from disappointed runners coming back to us.
We are aware that we have a technical issue to address in respect of the new online ordering system. At present when we download the orders, for the previous month, for packing and dispatch the system immediately marks the shirts as sent. If we then find we do not have sufficient stock to fulfill the orders we are not able to change the order status. Hence when runners check their profile page they see the shirt marked as sent whereas if they check with their home event they find there is nothing for them to collect.
We do have a record of all runners on the waiting list and we will prioritise these orders as soon as we have stock so it would be good if you could reassure all those waiting that their shirt will be sent as soon as possible and perhaps more importantly explain why they have not yet received their shirt .
On another note, can we suggest that you encourage runners at your event to check their size requirements with other runners who have already received their tees as we are spending an increasing amount of time dealing with runners wishing to do an exchange for a different size. As a matter of policy (and as stated in the congratulatory emails), we do not do exchanges.
So sorry to be long winded but it is important to us that runners are fully informed why there is a delay.
You may have been wondering what has been going on with the pavilion. Why has it not been fixed yet? When will it be fixed? What will happen to it?
The pavilion is leased out to Orpington Football Club and they have kindly let us use the pavilion for the last 6 months. It served our needs really well. We cleaned it up and used the water to fill up the urns, we used the electric points to heat up the urns, and the hot water to wash up our mugs...oh and we could use the toilets. Since a break in and vandalism some months ago we have just one working electric socket but no water meaning we have to bring up our own supply each week and we cannot use the toilets.
I am pleased to announce that the pavilion will be completely refurbished in the coming months. The damage from the break in will not be fixed and instead the monies from the insurance will be directed towards the refurbishment. The work will see all the windows filled in leaving just one front door to secure (plus one fire door at the back). Inside everything will be refurbished with new showers, sinks, internal walls, and a fantastic new kitchen. Chris Harper from Orpington Football Club, who has been doing an amazing job raising the money for this work, has confirmed the following:
The delay in the pavilion renovation has been caused by:
The refurbishment to the pavilion will be extensive. I have a specification of works which will go out to tender.
Timescale is to have the pavilion ready for late August/September 2013.
Any voluntary help or more material contributions from your members and/or their networks gratefully accepted
We may not have use of the pavilion during the works as the builders may wish to secure the work areas.
There is no problem with us using the pavilion post renovation which is excellent news – as there will be a proper kitchen area for us to make/serve teas...and do the washing up etc...no more carrying water across the park, hooray!
Its so wonderful that we are being allowed to use these facilities. There will be no charge except a token contribution to utility bills and possibly a sharing of tea urns...sounds great to me
