Event 322 Saturday 28th – a family affair

Osterley parkrun launched the Saturday morning between Christmas and New Year
(and last Saturday of the decade) with 270 participants and 21 volunteers – the
9:00am start coincided with grey clouds, and comparatively warm temperatures as
everybody congregated around the start/finish area, outside the historic house. The
atmosphere was extremely friendly, with plenty of runners discussing festive cheer,
and experiences at parkruns on Christmas Day – looking at the attire of runners,
Santa and his elves had obviously been busy delivering running orientated presents
too!

Jessamy Carlson gave an entertaining briefing, and the full team of volunteersmarshalled and organised the event with the great expertise – the following individuals are to be thanked:

Amanda CAHILL  •  Caroline SIBIA  •  Christopher MAYBIN  •  David
DUGGAN  •  Derek WINDEATT  •  Ekam SINGH SANDHU  •  Gabriella

We all know Christmas is a time for family, and parkrun likes to welcome new people
in the family of over 6 million who possess a barcode. At Saturday’s run, 7 people
christened their barcodes – congratulations to Lorna Bruce, Diago Dsouza and five
members of the Bute family – Amanda, Paul, Alisa, Clara and Kirsten – hopefully
you’ll be back to use your barcodes again soon!

Whilst mentioning families, a few jumped out whilst looking at the details of the
parkrun. The Ward family of four ran at Osterley for the first time – Oliver (JM 11-
14) completed the 5km in 24:14, his faster parkrun time, and Mum Nicky also
achieved her fastest parkrun after 15 runs (26:47). Dad Paul ran with Bethany
(JW10) and both completed the course in 32:14! The Pitt family ran at various
parkruns on Christmas Day due to work commitments with the NHS (we thank you
for that!), and had a celebratory run together at Osterley – daughters Steph, Sophie
and father Jeremy, all crossing the line within a second of 29:14! (I’ll add my
personal thanks to them for encouraging me in the last kilometre!). Parents
Jacqueline and Joseph Chang along with sons Jacob and Thomas have run over
750 parkruns between them, and added to their tally with completing two laps around
the scenic estate. The Bale family also ran and volunteered – with Nigel running,
Louise performing a volunteer role which also allowed her to get run, and Isaac and
Matthew volunteering!

It appears 9 people didn’t have times registered (‘unknowns’)– the abbreviation of
DFYB is parkrun terminology participants are regularly reminded of……Don’t Forget
Your Barcode is great advice when getting to the start line on a Saturday morning!

With 270 runners, there had to be some milestones, and there were! Official
celebrations go to Thomas Chang (JM10, and mentioned above) for his 10 th run,
Jack Wright for his 50 th parkrun (thanks for doing the first timers briefing too!!) as
well as Robert Cain and Philippa Brown, and Seamus McEvoy on his 100 th (94
have been at Osterley!). You can all expect an email soon to order a T shirt to
recognise your achievements! Not an official milestone, John Scaife completed his
200 th parkrun – I reckon that’s worth a mention too!

There are still spaces on the volunteer roster over the next few weeks, so why not try
viewing parkrun from a different angle? Plenty of volunteering roles are available to
be performed – please email osterleyhelpers@parkrun.com if you are interested.
You may have seen Osterley is hosting a parkrun on New Years Day, the only day in
the year when parkrunners can record two parkruns. Osterley parkrun will start at
10.30am and an above average number of runners are expected – if you are only
running at Osterley, please arrive early – if you are doing a double, please get here
as soon as you can whilst obeying speed limits if driving! Car park marshals will
direct you to appropriate places – please recognise they are volunteers and will be
guiding to the best areas!

As mentioned at the start, it’s the end of the year – a fantastic year! 50 parkruns with
15,048 runs have taken place…that’s 75,240 km of well-trodden steps around our
course! It averages 301 people for each run – outstanding!!! Whilst looking at the
statistics, it’s also noticed that the total number of runs has reached just over 48,000
– this means that the 50,000 th finisher should happen in within the next two months –
could it be you?

Last parkrun of 2018!

There was an impressive number of people at Osterley parkrun this morning for our 272nd parkrun, no doubt keen to run off some turkey and chocolate after Christmas festivities. And it was great to be able to celebrate one of our regular runner's 250th run - congratulations to Tunde, and thank you for all the help and support you give us at Osterley parkrun.
247 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 37 were first timers and 31 recorded new Personal Bests.Well done to all of you. We hope you'll join us again soon. And it was great to see so many visitors. We hope you'll visit us again - thank you to those of you who were so complimentary about our course and volunteers. We're very modest, but our parkrun is pretty awesome...

Parkrun regular Finlay on track for his PB after 174 runs

Thank you again to our hi viz heroes. We couldn't do it without you! We are looking a bit short for January so please do sign up for a slot if you can. There are a variety of jobs to be done, some of which can be done before or after the run. Do get in touch if there's something you fancy doing. We provide training and guidance for all the roles, and can happily talk you through what a role entails if you're unsure. And if you can't volunteer on a Saturday, there's always Osterley Juniors on a Sunday morning, same time, same place. Please drop us a line if you can assist!

Well, we got there in the end.
Apologies for the delay in results today. I marked my 100th volunteer with an RD first - calling parkrun HQ’s technical support gurus. Let’s hope it was the first and last time, eh? We are very lucky to have such a crack squad of RDs, because without Andrew and Alison’s support today, I am not sure I would have managed it!
ANYWAY. Well done on an excellent parkrun today. It was a beautiful morning at Osterley and it was great to see such a gang of you turn up. Well done to Rachel, Ann-Marie, Nicola, Shalini, Prem and Sean who all completed their first ever parkruns today. Great efforts! At the opposite end of the stats, eight of our runners today have completed more than 250 parkruns! That’s quite a lot of running!
Forty one of our runners recorded PBs which is pretty epic. That’s 20% of the field! A particular shout out must go to Rachael who led the field home today, scoring a cracking PB in the process. Rachael, I think that course record might be in your sights! Both Isaac and Jonah Shaw scored PBs today too - well done boys!
One of the nicest things about parkrun is the way people support each other, and this was especially demonstrated today by Deb who may as well have run the course twice, given how many people she went back to support in the final straights. Thank you Deb. I know a lot of people are very grateful to you for your cheering and encouragement.

Osterley parkrun, Event number 250; 21 July 2018

The 250th parkrun at Osterley was held in glorious sunshine with the park in perfect condition for a raft of PBs. To celebrate this milestone we ran the course in reverse, assembling on the meadow for the start and finishing under the trees by the lake. Many thanks to Jim for arriving early to puzzle out where the cones and signs should be placed; not so easy when approaching the wood from the opposite direction. And there was cake provided by Fiona – it must have been good because it was all gone by the time I got there!

We celebrated Clare’s 150th volunteering appearance at Osterley and Els’ 100th run. But most of all, we cheered Mark Tickner’s forthcoming marriage to Sammy that afternoon. Mark ran at Osterley and Sammy at Basingstoke to kick off their special day. Congratulations from all at Osterley.

Now we look forward to our 5th anniversary parkrun on 1st September. We have another variation on the route planned for that occasion. Add it to your diary now!

Osterley parkrun, Event number 249; 14th July 2018

The participants for our 249th event were met with a parched Osterley but everyone did very well dealing with the conditions - perhaps we're used to it now.

Despite the heat we recorded our fourth fastest male runner - congratulations Andrew McCaskill, two new age group records and 44 PBs!

Once again many Gunnersbury parkrunners joined us and we also welcomed tourists from far and wide including Ghana.

A huge thank you to our volunteers - they make parkrun possible, as well as enjoyable and fantastically rewarding for all those who take part each Saturday.

Osterley parkrun, Event number 248; 7th July 2018

It was another sultry morning up at Osterley, and some 247 people turned up to run our 248th event. With our neighbours, Gunnersbury, on hiatus for a couple of weeks, it was great to see a few of their regulars make an appearance. And we were joined by runners from a whole variety of other parkruns. Two of our visitors, Juno Jenkins and John Kinder set excellent times in the VW75-79 and VM80-84 age groups. We hope you enjoyed your trip to us, and do come back again! Thanks to our photographers - there are some great shots, so thank you!

The summer holidays are approaching and many of you will be off on your travels. If you’re planning to stay closer to home, and perhaps are feeling the heat a little, do please consider whether you could volunteer with us. There are lots of roles, and several can be done before the run, or indeed, afterwards, so please let us know if you can help us out. If everyone who regularly runs Osterley volunteers just three times a year, the roster would be full!

This week 247 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 62 were first timers and 28 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 22 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 21 volunteers, to whom we are very grateful! Thank you so much for giving up your time to help us keep the show on the road.

The annual summer Osterley 10K added to the 64 first timers, many of whom completed the parkrun and then went on to complete the 10k. Osterley parkrun, Event number 232; 10 March 2018

20180310_085935

We welcomed around 50 young runners who were taking part in the parkrun as a qualifier for the Hounslow mini marathon team. Runners representing London boroughs will then compete on Sunday 22 April as part of the London marathon program of events.

Jonathan Bartholomew confirmed his recent form at Osterley as first finisher in the time of 18:53. And it was great to see Duke of Edinburgh volunteer Niamh Murphy sprint home as first female finisher in 22:02. All those who registered for the trial were then presented with a medal by the mayor.

We had several milestone runs. Jonah Shaw and Isaac Phelan celebrated their 10th run with PBs. Joseph Whittaker, Sukhwant Singh Sangha and Grace McBride hit the 50 mark. Well done to all and we hope the milestone t-shirts will soon be available to order again now that parkrun has taken their sourcing in-house.

Finally, you may not have seen that Osterley was this week’s featured parkrun on the national site.

Osterley parkrun, Event number 231; 3 March 2018

It was a weekend of sporting history. Britain's Mo Farah won the inaugural 'Big Half' race in London after a sprint finish. Sir Roger Bannister, the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, sadly died at the age of 88. And at Osterley 181 runners, of whom 44 were first timers, braved 'The Beast from the East' and joined us for a very wintery parkrun.

On Friday the park, like most of the UK, was covered in a thick layer of snow. Across the country many event organisers took the wise decision to cancel. Event Director Geoff Miles braved the freezing weather to walk the course and check the paths. Ice is the biggest problem when it comes to parkrun and it's never worth risking runners safety.

However on Saturday morning, with temperatures rising a little and the paths judged run-friendly, we took the decision to go ahead.

We were glad we were able to as parkrun visitors from across London and further afield showed up to join Osterley regulars. Everyone seemed delighted to have the chance to see Osterley in all its scenic beauty and there was a particularly positive atmosphere.

Visitor Stephen Morris completed his 250th run on his 50th birthday and managed a PB in the snow. Congratulations too to Thomas Skinner on 50 runs and Gunnersbury regular Nick Bath on completing 100.

Finally a big shout out to our 13 volunteers: Geoff MILES • Christopher MAYBIN • David SHEPHARD • Alexander SHEPHARD • Alison SHEPHARD • Alison DANIELS • Finlay MCBRIDE • Andrew MORRISON • Louise BALE • Matthew BALE • Tim BEESLEY • Sophie ROUHAUD • Derek WINDEATT. Hi-vis Heroes all.

Osterley parkrun, Event number 221; 30th December 2017

parkrun 30 Dec 2017

Many parkruns across the UK had to be cancelled today because of severe weather conditions. But that was decidedly not the case at Osterley where the rain held off and the morning was bright(ish) and mild. Nevertheless, that recent rain had an impact on runner’s legs as they struggled up “the hill” and across the meadow into a strong breeze.

parkrun 30 Dec 2017

We celebrated Abigail’s 100th run with 2 delicious cakes. The recent input of cakes and mince pies at Osterley will lead to some New Year’s resolutions to get out and run more!
It was also the 50th parkrun for Gemma Ryder and the 10th for Alexander Shephard. Well done to them and to all who achieved milestones in 2017

First man across the line was Simon Egan, making one of his occasional visits from Woking. First lady was Sue Jeddi, visiting from Southwick Country Park so presumably found the Osterley course vaguely familiar.

We hope to see many of you at our additional parkrun on New Year’s Day starting at 10.30
