Event #216, 6 July 2019: Anyone for te..parkrun!

So the fine weather continued and while some thoughts this week have turned to action at Wimbledon this week, others turned to their usual Saturday morning action here at parkrun.  And I tell you what, judging by some of what I saw today just as much greenery at Figgate park as at SW19 currently!  Hopefully you all enjoyed your morning as much as I did myself.

We've had a good number of "aces" today also, firstly all tokens returned with none missing so thanks to everybody for that today.  Also any event be it Wimbledon or a parkrun event needs its team of volunteers behind the scenes to ensure all runs well...after the appeals on facebook this week and my own during the pre-run brief this morning - a huge thank you to all those who came found me afterwards and stepped up for volunteering, as a result i'm happy to say we now have a full rota for next week.  Lets keep that momentum going - (like Federer/Nadal through the mens draw) this period is always tricky with people away - please check out the volunteer rota found here and email in with your barcode number, date and preferred role (if any) portobello@parkrun.com

We had a few milestone achievements today as well:

Rebekah Knipe 10th junior run (part of a group of 9 Knipe family on course today - 5 visiting from Newcastle Australia!) Rebekah celebrated a pb today also so congratulations!

Keith Adamson 50th run also landing a pb today so congratulations to you too!

Fiona McKenzie 25th volunteer today - thank you for all your help!

Worth also just mentioning an excellent run today from our 1st finisher Peter Avent coming in with a pb and finishing 20 secs shy of the mens course record (which has stood since November 2015!  Certainly had us volunteers excited!)

This week 313 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 41 were first timers and 56 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 32 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 21 volunteers:

Fiona M MACKENZIE • Sarah DAVIS • Sheila MASSON • Iain PEARCE • Lynne CARTER • Wendy MCFARLANE • Ann RAUTENBACH • Robert MAIN • Ciaron FORREST • Gavin WILLSHAW • Christian BARLOW • Kate MURRAY • Richard MUDIE • Aj GOODSIR • Rachel SLASKI • Elaine BERRI • Catherine CUMMING • Luca BASSO • Caroline DESMULLIEZ • David MILNE • Katie NEVANS

Event #91, 28 January 2017: Nice weather for ducks

It was pretty grim weather yesterday; relentless rain from the moment I got up and throughout the day, and only a few degrees above freezing. One of the main challenges for the core team was just trying to keep equipment, briefing notes and manual recording sheets dry. And those who were more stationary than me - the volunteers doing timekeeping, scanning, tokens, marshalling, will have had a job keeping their hands warm... but still plenty of smiles on show, thank you volunteers!

Despite the miserable weather, there are many reasons to be cheerful... 292 of them in fact. In the last weekend of January last year, we had 184 runners, so the number of people motivated to participate even in poor weather like that, is superb. The founders of the event are I'm sure pretty delighted to see what the community has made of it, and how welcoming it is for anyone who wants to join us for a run round a beautiful park on a Saturday morning. 36 first timers and 66 new PBs yesterday - fantastic.

You may have noticed that as we get busier we're having to re-consider a few aspects. One change we've introduced in the past few weeks is an extra marshal to help us get used to a bit of congestion and the increased potential for pile-ups as some runners sprint for the finish while others are going back round for their final lap. This seemed to work well yesterday, thanks for your help.

We'll continue to post messages on facebook reminding of protocols or any new considerations if we need to. We also aim to share insight and key messages at the pre-run briefing, when the Run Director remembers to put the batteries in to the megaphone! Any feedback good or bad is always welcome, thanks again for all your input and for making Porty parkrun what it is.

Event #61, 2nd July 2016: Celebrating parkrun tourism

We were lucky enough to fit today's run in-between showers...Welcome to Scotland in July! Well done to Fergus Wood - looks like you did your 10th parkrun today and you should be able to order your t-shirt soon.

It was great to welcome visitors from elsewhere around the UK, a couple sporting their apricot parkrun t-shirts letting us know where they usually run. I expect a few of our regulars will be enjoying some parkrun tourism over the next month or two. If you're visiting a parkrun on holiday, send us a selfie on Twitter (@portyparkrun) or Facebook - will be interesting to see where our Porty runners get to over summer, and who gets furthest... (And remember that parkruns south of the border start at 9am, not 9.30am!)

Of course the other thing about holiday season is that some of our regular volunteers aren't always around, so please do try and help out once over the summer if you can. No job too hard and a briefing will be given. Let us know by emailing the mailbox portobellooffice@parkrun.com

Event #2, 25 April 2015: Nice weather for ducks

I'll be honest, when I got up this morning and looked out the window I groaned as it was BUCKETING rain. After the beautiful sunshine last week and having done our practice run in the rain I really wasn't in the mood for being soaked to the skin again. However, as seems to be the norm, the parkrun weather gods waved their wand and whilst today was definitely a damp run, it stopped raining in time for it to be a bit more enjoyable than it might otherwise have been.

I was utterly overwhelmed by the number of First Timers this week. 108 of you! It did make me chuckle when I asked for the first timers to come forward and pretty much everyone who was standing about moved closer. We had a 30 new PBs and representatives of 22 running clubs took part. A quick nose at the results tells me that David Woods travelled from Haddington, Steve Pattison from Newcastle Upon Tyne, Andrew Kirkland from Manchester, Jill Horsburgh from Linlithgow, Mark Fry from Cwmbran, and Douglas Anderson from Annan.

Good Luck to anyone participating in the Virgin London Marathon this weekend.

Big thanks to our volunteers this week without whom this event would not have happened:

Alastair BROCKIE • Andrew STAVERT • Bethany WHITESIDE • Ciara WEBB • Iain CAMERON • Keith KIRKWOOD • Kenny GUNN-RUSSELL • Michael James HANNAM • Rachel SMITH • Robbie YATES • Sandy MACDONALD • Shona MACDONALD • Steven LAVERTY • Stuart FLETCHER

The roster for the next few weeks is on the Portobello parkrun, Edinburgh webpage. No job is too difficult so please get in touch. The roster for the next few weeks can be viewed at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/portobello/futureroster/,  email portobellooffice@parkrun.com. We didn't have a full roster this week and that puts unnecessary pressure on the other volunteers. No volunteers = no parkrun.

Event #1, 18 April 2015: The first ever Portobello parkrun, Edinburgh

Well - we did it!

107 of you are newly registered with Portobello parkrun, Edinburgh and 51 of those happened within the past week. Today the parkrun weather gods were looking down on us and we had a beautiful morning at Figgate Park for our inaugural parkrun. It's been a year in the planning and what a year it's been.

Portobello parkrun started as a semi-serious conversation between two best friends who, after about a half an hour of 'pretend' planning, realised this was something that they could actually do. parkrun had become part of our lives and the idea of starting a new event in Edinburgh to complement the long-standing Edinburgh parkrun was too exciting to resist! My little brother Steve (Woodhouse Moor) sent me a text one day to tell me that there was an 'almost perfect' 1 mile loop around Figgate Park and it spiralled from there. A few tweaks and we had our 5k parkrun course. Susan Morrison (Edinburgh) has been the rock that got us to today, as a parkrun Ambassador we wouldn't have managed it without her. We are also immensely grateful for the support of the City of Edinburgh Council and the Craigentinney and Duddingston, and Portobello and Craigmillar Neighbourhood Partnerships. And as for today - what a super crowd you were! I have to say though, I think a highlight for me was the serenade from the train passing over the railway bridge - it definitely put a cherry on top of an amazing morning.

A special mention to Paul Graham who started his 60th birthday celebrations yesterday by volunteering with us. George Anderson captured our first event and his pictures can be viewed here. Huge thanks to our merry band of volunteers who not only volunteered today but also stood out on the most miserable Sunday in recent memory for the test run:

Alastair BROCKIE  •  Ashley MCMAHON  •  Bethany WHITESIDE  •  Caroline STEVENSON  •  Ciara WEBB  •  Davie BLACK  •  Derek CRAWFORD  •  Donald MACLEOD  •  George ANDERSON  •  Jane MACLEOD  •  Michael James HANNAM  •  Paul GRAHAM  •  Rod SMITH  •  Siobhan GRAHAM  •  Steve PATTISON  •  Stuart FLETCHER  •  Victoria MULVIHILL  •  Susan MORRISON

The roster for the next four weeks is on the Portobello parkrun, Edinburgh webpage. No job is too difficult so please get in touch. Without volunteers parkrun doesn't happen and we need your help! www.parkrun.org.uk/portobello/futureroster, email portobellooffice@parkrun.com
