Raphael parkrun Report #245
What a pleasant morning for a run. The recent cold snap has passed and temperatures were very mild for this time of year. The rain stayed away, and although there was a gentle breeze, it was pretty good running conditions.
Attendance was down compared to previous weeks, maybe the good intentions of New Year resolutions had come to an end, with normality resumed, or given we have said goodbye to January, maybe people are glad to have completed ‘Runanuary’ and are now having a rest! Whatever the reason, we saw 423 runners, joggers and walkers, and if this is the new norm, then our parkrun continues to be exceptionally popular and growing year on year.
With a growing number of participants, we continue to need volunteers each week, so a huge thank you to the 31 volunteers who helped Louisa (today’s RD) and her team today put on a successful event. One reminder though, given the increase in numbers, particularly as we welcome more and more newbies and tourists, please attend the run briefing before the run, held at the bandstand. Even if you are a Raphael parkrun regular and know the course inside out, there may be other important information on course conditions, obstacles to be aware of, or other announcements which are specific to the event.
After a fantastic pacer week last Saturday, it was no surprise to see a dip in PBs, but well done to the 53 of you who did run a PB today. Also, congratulations to four milestones today. Rosalind Symes and Jennifer Louden both completed their 50th parkrun and Erin Wilkinson and Lauren Mullett completed their 10th parkrun to reach their first junior milestone. Not an official milestone, but well done to Jackie Park, our tail walker today, on completing her 200th parkrun in the process.
John Whitehead (SM25-29) of Havering Athletic Club was first over the line in 16:47 and achieved a PB.
Gavin Watts (VM35-39) of Defence Sports & Recreation was second over the line in 16:48.
Crispian Bloomfield (VM40-44) of Billericay Striders RC was third over the line in 16:51.
Rosa Prideaux (VW20-24) of Chelmsford AC was first (6th overall) over the line in 18:00.
Emma Prideaux (VW45-49) of Billericay Striders RC was second (7th overall) over the line in 18:02.
Morgan Campbell (SW30-34) of Havering Athletic Club was third (11th overall) over the line in 18:58.
The three highest age grades were recorded by:
Emma Prideaux (VW45-49) of Billericay Striders RC – 88.91% with a time of 18:02 (7th overall).
Crispian Bloomfield (VM40-44) of Billericay Striders RC – 82.89% with a time of 16:51 (3rd overall).
Rosa Prideaux (VW20-24) of Chelmsford AC – 82.22% with a time of 18:00 (6th overall).
Interesting Fact/Did You Know?
Whilst we know parkrun is not a race, it was a very strong field today on both the men’s and women’s side, with a sprint finish for the first three places in the men’s event (1st to 3rd covered by 4 seconds) and similar in the women’s run (1st and 2nd only two seconds apart)! In fact, for those of you who like stats, it was the first time Raphael parkrun has seen both the first three men finish in under 17 minutes, and the first three women finish in under 19 minutes in the same event.
