Riddlesdown parkrun Event Report 27th July 2019 – Event 439

The One in The Week Where a UK Record Temperature was Set - and the Mud Returned to Riddlesdown

Report by Andrew Bull
Photos by Chris Wright

For the second Saturday running a hot dry week was followed by Friday night storms and a damp soggy Saturday morning.
Thursday saw a UK record temperature set but the Friday night rain left mud and lying water, more like January than July. And this week the rain didn’t even stop for the parkrun.

Despite the miserable conditions there was an increase in numbers over last week and our heroic but soaking wet volunteers who made the event possible.

The week’s Run Director was grumpy Steve O’Loughlin who had a lot to be grumpy about.

He was ably supported by 25 heroic volunteers. Brilliantly done every one of you. The volunteer roster for August still has spaces to be filled – see the following link! https://www.parkrun.org.uk/riddlesdown/futureroster/
Please try to volunteer well in advance so the RDs can plan well ahead. NO volunteers means NO parkrun. Please contact riddlesdown@parkrun.com if you can assist.

The wet weather meant there were 144 finishers, 11 were doing their first parkrun at Riddlesdown, and 5 were doing their first ever parkrun (what a day to choose) well done and hope to see you all again. Given the conditions there were also an impressive 13 personal bests.
There were also 7 unknown athletes this week.

Barrie Finch earned his green t-shirt today, running his 250th parkrun, and his 155th at Riddlesdown. Barrie has volunteered on 7 occasions, and regularly accompanies one of his young nephews around our course. Congratulations Barrie!

Jamie Witts earns the red t-shirt on his 50th parkrun. He first ran on 2nd January 2016, 42 of his runs have been at Riddlesdown and he has also run at Inverness. Well done Jamie.

First Male Finishers
1. Unknown - #DFYB (This runner did not forget his barcode – he just didn’t want his time recorded – Ed)
2. Oliver Kidd – 18:48
3. Darren Ekins – 19:08

First Female Finishers

1. Johanna Vickers – 19:56
2. Nicola Archer – 20:18
3. Stephanie Upton – 22:09

Stat of the Week –
Last week the 6 millionth person registered for parkrun. But approx. 3.7 million only have completed a parkrun. Some will be volunteers (without whom there would be no parkrun) and a few duplicates. The rest have not completed a parkrun - yet!

Bushy not the UK no.1 parkrun
Bushy parkrun has taken place 799 times and this week was the first ever time that another UK parkrun had a higher attendance. No doubt due to the weather Bushy had a mere 840 runners. Congratulations to Southampton parkrun, which topped the list with 973 runners and Poole parkrun, with 886 runners. Weather was obviously better on the south coast!

Next Saturday will be Event 440 at Riddlesdown, if you are running there or elsewhere, have a great week.
