It's Saturday, that can only mean one thing… It’s parkrunday!! It’s the last parkrun of the year and of the decade!!
My running colleagues and I decided a little bit of parkrun tourism was in order and chose Roundhay event #452 as our destination. The first impressions of the park were that is was a good-sized park with plenty of parking along the road around it. We found the lakeside car park and set off for a warm up around the park and to get our bearings of the park and find out where the start was located.
We immediately found that there were a few inclines to be found around the park but all the route was on tarmac - no snow or ice just a few leaves and bits of mud on corners -nothing too much to worry about.
After the first timers briefing by Dave Weight, we were all ushered to the start for our run brief by Mary O’Donnell, who, over their nifty PA system, announced various milestones were being celebrated :- there are quite a few so I’ll mention them at the end after the run when the totals are incremented.
The run was a busy one and we were set off up the first incline which immediately starts to stretch out the field of runners, up to the first turn and the first chance to catch one's breath, then it’s a left down the hill alongside the cricket pitch all the way to the bottom of the hill before a left turn again back up the hill. Lap 1 done, only 2 more to go!
The weather was kind to us: there was no rain, it was quite cool so the run kept us warm whilst we completed the task.
First time ever parkrunners :- Lewis Barn, Naomi Priest, Liam French, Chelsea Martin, Edmund Craske, Hannah Priest, Amber Black, Louisa Maven, Evie Cook and George Sutcliffe – well done to all of these first timers; welcome to the parkrun family - enjoy the rest of the ‘journey’!
Celebrating 10 parkruns :- Sam Cook
Celebrating 50 parkruns :- Alison Traynor, Sophie Thompson, Joanne White and Anne Siddle.
Celebrating 100 parkruns :- Denise McGreachy, Rachel Hartley and Kate Jackson.
Celebrating 250 parkruns Madeleine Watson
Celebrating 100 different parkrun events :- George Fielding
There were 384 finishers today of whom 69 were first timers and 43 recorded personal bests. Representatives of 37 different clubs took part.
First finisher was Richard Drake from Roundhay Runners in a time of 18:46 a new PB for the course followed closely by Freddie Roden a JM11-14 athlete from Abbey Runners Leeds in 18:50.
The first lady home was Rachel Davidson from Valley Striders in 21:50, second lady finisher was Emily Driscoll from Leeds city AC in 21:58
As usual the marshals did a great job of encouraging us around the course and keeping us on track. There were a couple of pacers, Brett Anderson and Tim Straughan, who provided a service for those wishing to chase that PB.
Well done to everyone who helped put this event on, all the core team and volunteers. It’s a great way to start a Saturday in my opinion; without all of them, what else would we do?
On behalf of myself and my running colleagues from Swinton running club, well done and keep up the good work.
