Tunbridge Wells Harriers takeover, part deux

14th May 2016: Event number 105
Run report written by Tunbridge Wells Harrier, Bob Lawrence.

I am always astonished on a Saturday morning at how many of this breed of individuals called parkrunners are at their respective starts, all ready to run at 09:00. At 08:50 all is very quiet and then runners appear from everywhere, as if by magic, to fulfill the obligations they have made to family, friends or even themselves to be there to share in a common goal.

Today, local running club, Tunbridge Wells Harriers were able to lend extensive support to their 'home' parkrun by supplying encouraging marshals and pacemakers to help the runners achieve their own personal targets.

With the resplendent Dunorlan Park looking at its best in the morning sunlight, following a pre-run brief, a record number of 230 runners, including 57 first timers, set off in near perfect conditions.

The only sound to be heard above the sound of the runners as they strode up the hill away from the lake was the sound of birds in the trees looking down as this mass family made its way around the two lap course.

From the beginning, Matthew Green of Wadhurst Runners strode out purposefully to not only run a personal best time of 18:49, but also a high age grading of 77.15%. He was closely followed by two Tunbridge Wells Harriers, Tim Lucas and Alex Holmes, both recording personal bests of 19:18 & 19:29 respectively. The first lady to finish was Ali Farrall, also of Wadhurst Runners, and also in a personal best time of 21:20 (age grading 73.20%) with Grace Fleming of Tonbridge AC running 22:35. Of note, one of our more mature ladies Sandra Farrall (W70-74) was the only other runner to exceed 70% in age grading with 70.71%. It was a very special day for personal bests with 67 new records set. Astonishing.
