13th August 2016: Event number 117

Run report written by Joe Watts

On what was another warm & sunny Saturday morning in Dunorlan Park this week our team of volunteers were joined by 188 runners, of whom 13 were taking part in their first ever parkrun & 12 were parkrun tourists. Of the returning runners, 38 achieved a new Personal Best on our course. We also welcomed representatives of 12 different athletics clubs.

Your Run Director this week was Steve Barnfield (pictured below giving the pre-run brief) who clocked up his 100th volunteering occasion with us! Steve has been a core member of the team, helping out ever since our inaugural event back in April 2014, so a big thank you to Steve for his loyalty and all the hard work that he has put into helping out at our event. Steve now joins Judy Guest (scanning Queen), Louise Fitzgerald and yours truly in the volunteering 100 club.

As for me, I was on barcode scanning duties, but not before I was to provide a briefing to a good crowd of new runners:

Now, I would like to share a rather funny incident which occurred at the previous week's event whereby, during the results processing it appeared that perhaps a runner had had the incorrect barcode scanned after the run. It was not a recognisable parkrun barcode number (which starts with an 'A'), but a rather long string of numbers and therefore we had to leave the result in that position as unknown due to the fact that we had no idea who the runner was. Later that weekend I received an e-mail from the runner who had finished in that position to say that she had been scanned but that her result had not come through. In the end it turned out that instead of having her plastic parkrun tag scanned, it was her supermarket loyalty tag instead! Now I know that parkrun is free, but trying to earn loyalty points from us for completing a 5km run is perhaps a step too far...

A reminder that on Saturday 27th August we celebrate the success of Team GB by taking part in the nation's biggest ever sports day; #IAMTEAMGB in association with ITV and Join In. We invite you to wear red, white and blue on this occasion where we hope to have a team of volunteer pacers on hand. If you would like to volunteer at this event then just send an email to royaltunbridgewellshelpers@parkrun.com

Important - advance notification of event cancellation - please note that our event will be cancelled on Saturday 3rd September. This is due to the Circus occupying the events field over that weekend. We shall return on Saturday 10th September.
