Mild weather and ideal conditions greeted 677 walkers, joggers and runners this morning.  The volunteer team was ably led by Adrian and assistant Run Director Aiden, who completed the volunteering part of his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh. It is always a pleasure to see the Duke of Edinburgh youngsters taking their volunteering roles seriously and growing in confidence week by week (and height.. especially for our Silver and Gold participants).

Talking of youngsters we had a small team busy in Stop Coffee Shop afterwards sorting 677 tokens back into order, ready for next parkrun day.

Event #293

Screenshot_20200113-193008_Chrome

A slightly cooler morning greeted our volunteers and runners on Saturday. The Core Team and pre event set up volunteers were busy first thing setting up an extended double funnel, which seemed to work really well.

Double funnel

How does it work?  When one funnel lane is full the gatekeeper closes the gate and opens the other funnel lane . In order to keep your well earned position, the first person switching lanes gets a number. These are given out in numerical order and the funnel lanes are then emptied in that order.

If you get a number, keep hold of it and as you approach the token team, hold it up high so they can see it, this signals when the 2nd gatekeeper needs to switch the gates.

Screenshot_20200113-195259_Gallery Screenshot_20200113-200659_Facebook Screenshot_20200113-200718_Facebook

Other golden rules of the funnel are, stay in the order you finished. This is because you are timed as you cross the finish line and the token you are then given at the end of the funnel corresponds with that time.  If you cross the finish line, stay in the funnel even if you don't have your barcode. If you leave the funnel without taking a token, the time of everyone behind you will be out and it causes issues for the volunteer Results Processor.

If you don't have your barcode, and do cross the finish line, stay in the funnel and just hand your token to the scanners at the end. Remember, no barcode means no result. However, if you make a note of your number, you can still see aproximately what time you registered when the results come out (you will be an unknown runner, we can't change that).

My last volunteering role as a Marshall at Park run this morning, due to me flying back to Australia next week. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome and have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this amazing experience, both here on a Saturday and at junior park run on a Sunday. Needless to say I will be volunteering at parkrun near where I live in Perth. Thanks everyone and here’s too the next time.

Messge from Event Director Paul:

As with many parkrun events across the UK we are seeing a large increase in participation which is fantastic because it means more people are getting out and enjoying the parkrun experience.

With this increase and with all the first timers at our event it seems a good time to post up about the rules we have at parkrun - don't worry there aren't many and they are there for your benefit.

With 700 people taking part in our parkrun it does mean the paths are crowded so please be mindful of other park users - we don't have sole use of the park and must share the space with others going about their business.

We actively encourage participation for all - this includes juniors / buggies and people with one dog on a short lead. With this mix it does mean we all have to be aware of others around us. Give everyone space and don't weave and dodge around.

As you will have seen last Saturday our double funnel was very busy for most of the event. We will be extending the double funnel so we can better cater for the larger numbers, please be patient when you queue in the funnel and please listen to the funnel managers as they try to keep the flow of runners moving.

If you have entered the funnel please stay in the queue and don't duck out even if you don't have a barcode - this jeopardises the accuracy of the results for everyone. Just use the time to recover / chat with your fellow parkrunners.

All parkruns have a no barcode / no result policy - this has to be a printed barcode or wristband / fob - a barcode on your phone screen is not sufficient and will not be accepted.

Event #289 The Christmas Day one

Screenshot_20191225-164955_Chrome

Hi ho ho, a very Merry Christmas to the wonderful community that make Shrewsbury parkrun. Who could have foreseen that over 700 volunteers, runners and supporters would turn up for our first ever Christmas Day event? But you did and made it one of the best events we have had the pleasure to put on.

Never have we seen so many runners taking part on a Saturday morning, it was an amazing sight to see 698 runners stretched around the The Quarry, on our Facebook page there are a couple of videos which show this -

https://www.facebook.com/105826452941579/posts/1279838932206986/

https://www.facebook.com/105826452941579/posts/1279792472211632/

Thank you to the volunteers who kindly chose to spend their time cheering everyone around the course, timing, keeping the funnel organised, handing out tokens, scanning etc. An extra special thank you to our Run Director Adrian for coordinating everything and ensuring the event went smoothly. We certainly had the right person in charge, Adrian is used to managing large number of parkrunners, in fact he was at the helm when we set the attendance record at 692 earlier this year, so it was apt that it was broke again today.
