Event #284 The Couch to 5k Edition

DSC_9456

Who remembers their first parkrun? The nervous excitement, the trepidation, the million and one thoughts going through your head - will it be full of really fast runners? will I be last? [you won't; there is always a Tail Walker whose job it is to come last] will anyone talk to me? am I allowed to walk? what do I do with my barcode? how on earth does the timing work?!

Today we welcomed three couch to 5k groups (#run4health.Shropshire, RunTogether Shrewsbury and Dolly Mixtures) to the world of parkrun and these were surely some of the thoughts going through the minds of our intrepid first-timers. You are all amazing for having completed your first parkrun - a fantastic accomplishment!

One of the couch to 5k groups #run4health.Shropshire is a joint venture between the NHS, local GPs, Public Health England, Shropshire Mind, Energize Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, University Centre Shrewsbury and Shrewsbury College. #run4health is headed up by Shropshire Shufflers Head Coach, Glenn Francke. As well as the couch to 5k group, #run4health is planning to deliver other courses and daytime running too.

One of the beauties of parkrun is that it doesn't matter what speed you go at - walk/jog/run/volunteer. Everyone is welcome. No-one is judging you; go at your own pace and enjoy it (and hopefully you found positive answers to the above questions and will return next week!).

Here's what participants of the #run4health.Shropshire group had to say:

"My mental and physical health have improved since completing the programme"

"Life-changing"

"Running helps me manage my mental health"

"Thank you for all your help and support. Will hopefully be back next week!"

"Thank you to all the coaches for your help over the last 10 weeks and for the encouragement today"

"It is great to see the positive impact this group has had on so many people"

Event #253 Sunshine and scouts

As you will have noticed we have had the 1st Monkmoor Scout Group join us over the last 2 months. Every week the Scouts have turned up and enthusiastically encouraged all of our parkrunners to walk, jog and run the course.  Today was the last of their volunteering and we saw Scout Leader, Steven Gray run the whole course in full kit.  Tomorrow the Scouts will be doing the same at Shrewsbury junior parkrun.

Event #226
18th August 2018
Written by Imogen Gunson from Perry Hall parkrun

We truly seem to be back with weather perfect for a run – cool and dry :-) . On the riverside walk to the start I met with a warm welcome today’s Run Director Glenn shortly before we had our first timers and tourists briefing, the group was large and had many first timers a which is lovely, I’m sure Shrewsbury left an excellent impression for them to return and be bitten by the parkrun bug!
As the mass assembled at the start it’s hard not to start talking to someone, particularly when I’m apricot showing you’re a tourist from afar! Meeting two lovely ladies who are local and come when other commitments allow, we certainly get pulled to be at events whenever diaries allow. We had been warned in the briefing of the hill en route (twice) and it certainly wakes you up early on.
It is truly a well marshalled course, I don’t think there’s much chance of going wrong which is a credit to the volunteer team for having so many hi vis heroes! On the route we also had many runners of all ages from first timers being supported round by friends and family, through to established runners alongside a wheelchair participant who passed me up the hill, amazing!
Shrewsbury is very lucky to have a wonderful volunteer family, to enable everyone to get outdoors in such a beautiful park and riverside run!

In total 446 parkrunners walked, jogged or ran of whom 68 achieved new PBs so a massive well done all!
Milestones was achieved by 1 into the ’100 club’, 2 into the ’50 club’ and 1 joined the ‘junior 10’ – I’m sure they’ll be looking forward to proudly wearing their black, red and white shirts before too long.
The first achievement for many is just getting to your first parkrun, whether you speed round or need some encouragement to keep going, remember we’re all out there taking part and that’s the amazing thing. Today we were joined by 16 first timers who remembered their barcode and hopefully enjoyed themselves so much they’ll return and maybe even catch the tourist bug, as I was one of 31 tourists.
Final note has to be the thank you to the high vis heroes of which we had 38 volunteers today, we really couldn’t enjoy our run without you!

Keith Ivison memorial run.

Saturday's parkrun was in memory of Keith Ivison who was one of the founding members of the wonderful Shropshire Shufflers. It was great to see so many people wearing the Shufflers colours of Red, White and blue. Keith's wife Christine and friends baked a fantastic selection of cakes with all the proceeds going to Severn Hospice.

As you may have noticed Shrewsbury parkrun goes from strength to strength, and recently our attendances have been between 450 and 550 runners. This is great news for us all as it means that more and more people are actively doing something to provide themselves with regular exercise. This does however place more stress on our course, particularly in the finish area, and those parts of the course where runners are passing each other.

Here are just a few pointers to make your parkrun an even more enjoyable experience for you as runners, for members of the public using the park, and for our wonderful volunteers. When running down the hill past the swimming pool please keep to the left, and be aware of pedestrians, it's their park too. Always give pedestrians right of way and be courteous, remember it's a run not a race. After you cross the finish line keep moving forward to get your finisher barcode, do not stop under any circumstances, otherwise at busy periods other runners cannot cross the finish line. We all like to chat when we have finished, but please, please keep off the path near the finish area. There may be other runners still coming through, plus there will be pedestrians and cyclists trying to get past.

Thanks for taking the time for reading these few little things for helping us all to have a really great time, because we all love parkrun, it's a beautiful thing people, a really beautiful things....so let's keep parkrun great.

Event #144 PBs & Milestones

The weather was kind to runners and volunteers alike at parkrun this week. A few spots of rain had made me reach for the waterproofs at 7.30 but luckily it came to nought. In fact by the time the run started at 9.00am the weather was set fine. Our run this week was an even numbered pacer event, and was ably staffed by runners who seem to have inbuilt atomic regulated bodies, able to evenly pace a five kilometre run and encourage fellow runners at the same time. It's something I must have a go at myself as it provides us all with a completely different way of volunteering and getting a run in at the same time, now that is what I call a win win situation! It was wonderful to welcome back regular parkrunner and amazing cake baker Gail Clayton this week after the major surgery which she has had recently. Its going to be a little while before Gail is back to full fitness, but it's a great first step to see her back at parkrun, get well soon Gail. In my exuberance to introduce the pacer event, and shout out the usual information, I completely forgot to mention that it was Julie Dean's 100th parkrun, well done on a great achievement and here's looking forward to the next 100. I promise I will call your name out at 200!

Big congratulations also to Jamie Smith who completed his 10th parkrun and Abi Varley who completed her 50th!

Well done to Susan Vuli who reached 25 different volunteering stints. Thank you very much to all our volunteers. We would love you to join us - email shrewsburyhelpers@parkrun.com if you fancy giving it a go. It was great fun watching SYTri and their handicap race :-) and cheering on all the runners.

Approximately 10 years of parkrunning. Not just running, but so much more besides. Congratulations to Danny Norman (ex-parkrun UK employee) who ran his 500th parkrun at Bradford - amazing achievement and extremely well-deserved!

Event #133 Herding Worms

Have you ever had that sickening feeling that you may have forgotten something important? As joint run director this week this was the feeling that was niggling away at me during the run and afterwards as we processed the results in the Stop Cafe. It was still bothering me in the afternoon as I did some work in my garden, and then like a Homer Simpson moment 'DOH' it came to me. Crikey and crumbs I shouted to myself, I'd forgotten to thank the volunteers during my run briefing. I had forgotten the most important element of parkrun, the people who give up their time, set up the start and finish, hand out the tokens, operate the timers and the scanners, Marshal the course, encourage and applaud the runners, and generally make the whole thing happen!!! I almost put my garden fork through my foot!!! So having made this faux pas I would like to thank them here...fellow volunteers I thank you, please forgive me. Luckily for next week's volunteers they will have a run director with a better memory, so with this in mind why don't you have a go at volunteering, it's great fun, you meet lovely people, and you don't get hot and sweaty.

Event #126 Bring Me Sunshine

The sun was shining (not too hot, thankfully!), the swans were swimming, the rowers were rowing and 324 parkrunners were running.

It's great to see a few new t-shirts being worn, including the rather fetching purple volunteer t-shirt, as modelled by your run directors. Well done to all of you who have achieved your milestones.

We have two new 10 Club members. Congratulations to Georgina Fowles and Millie Kiel :-)

Finish token 251 ran away today :-( If you do find him, he would love to return to his family next week :-)

From the parkrun website:

I forgot / lost my barcode. Can you please add my time?

Thank you for running with us at the weekend but sadly we can not add your time.

If you ran without a barcode at the weekend unfortunately we operate a no barcode - no result policy, so I'm afraid you'll have lost that result.
If you have been told differently I'm afraid you were misinformed. We are strict with regards to this policy as we process over 100,000 results every weekend and if we were to relax this policy it would increase the amount of work for our volunteers.

Thanks to this week's volunteers

Don't forget, it's even pacers next week!

Pacer-tastic!

DSC_6978

Saturday's parkrun was a pacer event for even numbers. We had 9 marvellous pacers and so good were they that even added together their collective paces were only 74 seconds out. Amazing on what is a difficult course to pace with its different gradients.

Thanks largely to the pacers there were an astonishing 94 pbs on Saturday - that's a quarter of the field. One of those pbs was recorded by Simon Maceachen. Simon's son, Harry, was born with a rare liver disease. His first transplant failed and he now needs a second one. Step forward Simon who is to donate part of his own liver to Harry. Normally Simon and his family would be fund raising for The Children's Liver Disease Foundation at this time of the year but as he will be otherwise bravely engaged in Hospital they will be unable to do so. If anyone would like to donate a pound or two to CLDF it would be very much appreciated.

We had another milestone this week. Eric Pridding clocked up his 50th stint as Timer.Always accurate and very reliable Shrewsbury parkrun is very grateful to Eric - and especially for the cake he brought!

Next Saturday sees our World Book Day themed run. Come dressed as your favourite character from a novel. There will be cake and proceeds will go to the Bring Matthew Home campaign to help 11 year old Matthew Cooper come home from Birmingham Children's Hospital where he has been since last August following a diagnosis of Brain and Spinal cancer.

Finally a reminder that, if you have not already done so, to update your ICE details on your parkrun profile. Hopefully it will never be needed but if it is then it is essential that the information is there.
