I completed my first parkrun in July 2018 in Market Harborough. Just a year and a half later, I’ve completed 81 parkruns with 68 of these being in Market Harborough. Sixfields Upton was my tenth parkrun tourist spot and I’ve even been lucky enough to complete parkruns in Poland and Denmark. As a regular volunteer for both parkrun and junior parkrun, I’ve given myself the challenge of complete my 100th run and 100th volunteer role on the same day and if all goes to plan, this should work out to be 29th June. Therefore, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to do some run report touristing.
So rather than my regular 8am wake up call and mad rush to get to the start line in Welland Park, I’m on the A508 for 8am. Ok, I may have been running a tad bit late. After a few wrong turns (you’d never guess I have to drive to Northampton for work everyday!), I find somewhere to park my car and follow all the other people in leggings and technical shirts. I spot the girls from my running group and make it (just in time) for the first timers brief. According to the results, there were a total of 57 first timers! I’m told the course is a 2-lapper with a little extra bit at the end. But the reality is, as a newly consistent sub-30 runner, I just follow the people in-front of me until I cross the finish line.
A starting brief is conducted and we’re told it’s the first anniversary next weekend. Unfortunately, I’ll be back in Market Harborough for their 200th event but happy to have made it to Sixfields within its first year. The countdown begins and we’re off. I begin running with my friend Leanne, who joins me on my long run for my half marathons and who regularly pushes me during our training sessions. We moan saying we’ve gone off too quick after a couple of minutes and decide to take it a bit steady. We complete the first lap and surprised when we’re more than half way. Everyone seems nice, friendly and supportive. We spot the photographer and I go for the cheesy grin and Leanne for the thumbs up. We eventually reach the home straight and my competitiveness gets the best of me and I sprint past Leanne who isn’t having any of it and squeezes past me just before the finishing funnel and beats me by a second. However, after 81 parkruns I got my fifth fastest parkrun ever. And an amazing 71 parkrunners earned PB’s today.
