Event Number 26 by Lucy Scruton

Weather conditions this morning where a little bit muggy but dry and warm. The course inspection looked good at the end of a dry summer and pleasantly showed no surprises. However still had a few alterations made to move the course away from on going construction.
Today we had 83 participants that walked, ran and jogged our new course of whom got 18 new PBs and 25 first timers - our First Lady and male where first timers too!! Our first male time was Simon Pennington with 19:42. Our First Lady was Alice Mary Clarkson with a time of 20:32.
Hopefully see you next week. We love you all!

Event number 25 – report by Run Director for the day, Lucy Scruton.

The morning's course inspection showed nothing more than a few new rabbit holes and very long and wet grass on the field near the slope. The weather was muggy and a bit hot for running, however a nice temperature for our fantastic volunteers.
Today we had 92 participants that ran, walked and jogged our course of whom 21 recorded new personal bests and 20 were first timers.
Ewan Taylor was our first male through the finish with 18:14 and first female was Lauren Thomas with 21:38 which is a new PB for the course!

Event number 24, report by Justin Smith

The volunteers felt a little lost without Andrew (ED) this morning, especially those setting up the event. Andrew knows all the little details and tricks; so between us we had to work it out for ourselves, and it did us some good, not least because this week we definitely had one of the best finish funnels ever constructed! The benefit of having our other ED present was that he selected The Best of Dolly Parton to play on our loud speaker. Real parkrun nerds know that listening to 'Jolene' can take at least ten seconds off a 5K PB!

It was fantastic to see so many people running, jogging and walking this morning, and the finish funnel crew noted some amazing sprint finishes! It is also great to see a good number of PBs again, and people visiting from various clubs! We love seeing you all!

A big thank you to people for remembering to take their shoes/ trainers off before entering the Sports Centre: this is appreciated.

The event was made possible this week by 20 volunteers:

Lauren THOMAS • Robert POPE • Sam RUSSELL • Clare NOBLE • Jonathan PRICE • Sue STEARN • Elethia LORKING • Justin SMITH • Ewan TAYLOR • David WARREN • Heather ALDHOUSE • Lucy SCRUTON • Tara AVER • John BURBRIDGE • Bev LORKING • Jessica BETSON • Jenny BURBRIDGE • Terry METCALFE • Janet METCALFE • Kevin HALLS

Event number 23, Soham Village College parkrun – event report by Lucy Scruton.

The weather for Saturday was perfect running conditions with a cool temperature and light breeze.  There was however an unwelcome and unexpected drizzle of rain for the hardy volunteers!
240830852_389727375837807_4730948837725998849_n

The good conditions made for new female and male records from Bethan Everson and James Smith.

There were 115 finishers, which is the highest attendance since our reopening.

From a volunteer’s perspective the event was well directed and brilliantly ran, walked and jogged by all. Thank you to all the volunteers that made our parkrun happen.

This week 115 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 41 were first timers and 28 recorded new Personal Bests.

Event number 22 at Soham Village College parkrun.

This morning's course inspection revealed nothing more than the ongoing building works around the college, and long wet grass on the field near the slope, so we were good to go! Today it was quite humid, so not easy going by any means; despite this we saw a lot of course PBs today: in fact, 25 of them!  It was hard work so well done to all who ran/ walked/ jogged!

We are so happy at the number of volunteers we are getting each week from local people; this means that the core volunteer team and the Event Directors get to run once in a while. By the way, both our Event Directors got course PBs today!

Saturday 7th August

The set up team arrived bright and early to check the course and discussed the minor alteration that had to be made to avoid the scaffolding that is now making its way around the school. A few minutes debate and the diversion was agreed and set up began. The morning started warm and bright and as such 69 people shortly arrived to take part in the 3rd parkrun back since Covid-19 forced us all to stop.

Half way through the event the clouds gathered and light rain fell but it didn't stop Lee from dancing at her marshal post by the science block!

Saturday 31st July by Hilary Scarlett

The day looked dull and dreary, and I wondered if we were in for yet more rain on top of a lot that we’d had in the previous couple of days.

83 runners, joggers & walkers took part this week and as usual included a good mix of ability and ages. We had 4 people attending their first parkrun and 3 people returning to us for their second parkrun’s. We had four people from the same family finish in the top 7 and George was back walking the course who is an inspiration to us all when we might be finding the run a bit tough.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the grass areas were just slightly soft after all the rain. Halfway round my second lap the sun came out for a few minutes. I am pleased to report there were 22 of us who gained a new PB so it was worth all the effort.

Many thanks to the volunteers who work hard before, during and after our parkrun and make the event possible and for cheering us on and encouraging us at various parts of the route. Some wear colourful wigs – you know who you are and you make us smile!

We are back! Event number 18 for Soham Village College parkrun!

Today our local parkrun returned, and not without a lot of work, thought, discussion and the following of national guidance.  It was simply amazing to see people today, and the fact that everyone respected the requests of the Sports Centre (wearing a face covering inside the building), and turned up with their own drinks is very much appreciated.

The course was inspected early this morning, and other than an awkwardly placed skip, which we managed to work around, all was good to go.  The round of applause as the Run Director's brief started was no doubt about a few things: appreciation of the volunteers; the return of parkrun; people seeing each other at a cherished event; and a feeling that it all felt a bit 'normal'.  It was an emotional moment.

The choice of music was superb as usual, as was the performance of all who took part. A big thank you to all concerned. See you next week!

Please remember, we need volunteers each week for your parkrun to work.

Soham Village College parkrun event 17. Justin Smith

After a very early walk of the course with one of our Event Directors, Jon, it was clear to me that, with just a small adjustment to the approach to the muddy slope on the field, all would be just fine for event 17.

There is not a great deal to report this week other than that, from my vantage point near our parkrun banner and with the music blasting, it was so obvious how much parkrun means to you all. There were loads of thumbs ups, smiles and some of you even combined your running with a bit of a dance!  I put this down to the excellent playlist!

It's lovely that we still have children from one of the local schools coming back for more: this is amazing!

One thing that was notable this week is that we had a group of tourists who, among their ranks can boast having ran at the most different parkrun venues in the UK. I won't go into the precise stats, but some of them have ran at hundreds of different parkruns!

IMG_0459

Also, we had a fair number of PBs today, with several regulars achieving their best times for Soham Village College parkrun specifically.  A few of these people are in the core organising team for our parkrun!  PBs are not the be all and end all; but they are nice when they happen!

Now for the stats!

Soham Village College parkrun event 16 – International Women’s Day, by Heather Aldhouse.

Wow! Who knew that #thisgirlcan, #InternationalWomensDay and #sohamvillagecollegeparkrun would have me volunteering and trying the role of doing  the first timers’ briefing at this morning’s event?  I love parkrun and I love volunteering at parkrun and I’m so pleased to have been able to take part in this way today.  My friends did their first parkrun today and I’m so proud of them and of the other first-timers who took part.  I’ll hope you’ll be back to do it all again soon.

The weather was much less blowy than we’ve had for most of the February parkruns.  There were some minor adjustments to the course to help us avoid some of the muddy bits that we’ve been enjoying (or not!) over the last few weeks.  Today’s parkrun was celebrating International Women’s Day and together with #thisgirlcan, we were hoping to encourage women and girls of any age or ability to become more active and take part in parkrun: whether walking, jogging, running or volunteering.

Of course, everyone is always welcome at parkrun and there was a fabulous turnout of enthusiastic participants poised and ready for the off at shortly after 9am.

DSCN0013

Well done to everyone who completed the course today.  You are all amazing!  First male finisher was Keiran Brady in a super speedy personal best time.  Cara MacFarlane, was the first female finisher and again in a personal best time, both wonderful achievements.

 20200307_100758~2

A huge thank you to all of the volunteers and Event Directors who make our parkrun happen every week.  I’m so pleased to know such a dedicated team.  If any of you reading this haven’t volunteered yet, or are thinking about it and there is just something holding you back...I would say, please just go for it!  The Soham Village College crew are welcoming, friendly and encouraging and will give you all the support you need in any of the roles.  I get the parkrun buzz from volunteering just as much as I do when I run.  Volunteering, running or walking, parkrun is a real blast of positivity to get the weekend off to a fabulous start.  Special thanks to Libby today for the excellent event photographs.

So, shall we do it all again next weekend?  Yes, absolutely! We’re off for that post-parkrun coffee now at the lovely Ross Peers Sports Centre. Thanks everyone.
