Southampton parkrun #346 – 9th February 2019

by Simon Hazlitt

This week was special: very sadly, one of our most devoted runners, Julie LAVINGTON, passed away this week and we were all keen to show our appreciation of this wonderful lady and support her family at this difficult time. Thus, over 1100 runners remembered Julie with a minute's applause. It was a great turnout, swelled by those who wouldn't normally run at Southampton but turned out this week especially for Julie. Sarah OSBORNE, is one such friend who so enjoyed it that she is planning on coming back next week.

There were great milestones today, with George CONNELL, and Amy NICE completing their 10th runs, Julie BRYSON, Thomas GOLDSTRAW and Greta LEE joining the 50 club and Aaron Barry, Matthew ASHWORTH, Jane OLIVER and Sam RADFORD all crossing the threshold of the 100 club. Not to be outdone, Alison CROOKS and Patrick JANSEN both joined the 250 club, and finally Rob KENDALL and Angela LEE passed through the 150 mark: not an official milestone, but pretty impressive nonetheless. Congratulations to them all.

Today was all about Julie in particular and the wonderful support of the running community in general. Julie was a member of Lordshill Road Runners, a vibrant local club that support our parkrun every week. Amazingly, 90 runners from the Club turned out to support her today. Two of them, Rachel BROWNE and Rachel FOX, were keen to stress how much they wanted to mark their respect, enthusing about the great coaching and support they get throughout the week. Thank you to Di MATTINGLY for the group photo.

Julie was an active member of the club, regularly attending a range of training sessions as well as racing in club colours, such as at the Hampshire Cross Country League events and many road races, including Chichester 10km only last weekend. Julie was also a regular at parkrun, running 100 times at the Southampton Common event, as well as undertaking some parkrun tourism as well.

Inspired by the example showed by Lordshill, I decided to search out other great examples of supportive clubs. Laura LEA is a member of Lonely Goat Running Club an online running community giving people that might otherwise be training on their own to chat to like-minded athletes, regardless of their standard. Adam PRATT, a member of Itchen Spitfires Running Club, was one of 43 runners from the Club today,, stressing how much he enjoyed the club training sessions, allowing him to indulge what he loves best - football and eating. As ever, the 17 Port and Maritime Veteran Runners were out in force, and Ian DAVIDSON made the point that it was great to see how many veterans turned out to run every Saturday, even some who hated running when it was a compulsory part of the working day!

Of course, what today demonstrated was the wonderful community that is parkrun. Old, young, fast, slow, parkrun brings us all together every Saturday morning to run and to volunteer. Long may it continue.
