The Love of parkrun
With Valentine's day only a few days ago we thought we would focus on a love theme for this week's report. The love of parkrun! People go running for many different reasons and we thought we'd ask some parkrunners why they love to get up early on a Saturday morning and run, here's what they said:
Sarah BURDON - 'There is a great sense of community and everyone is supportive of each other.'
Tony FLATMAN - 'This is my third time doing parkrun and I love the encouragement that has been shown to me.'
Wayne BURNS - 'It means I get a lay in instead of getting up at 5.30am for work!'
Helen OXLADE - 'parkrun has a great deaf community and today at my home parkrun; Guildford, they are doing a disability assessment, to ensure it is more inclusive.'
Lesley HUNTER - 'People are so friendly. I am surprised about how many people I know here from Chandlers Ford, Eastleigh and Southampton. I run, walk or volunteer and enjoy parkrun every week.'
Alex JOHNSTON - 'It keeps me fit.'
Graham EVANS - 'It gets me out of bed on a Saturday morning!'
Rob KELLY (Southampton parkrun Event Director) - 'Meeting up with mates on a Saturday and personally challenging myself each week.'
Luis Adrian ROSAS WIEDFELDT - 'Friendship - meeting friends (running buddies), who then turn into real friends. Also a sense of community, being part of something bigger and helping one another achieving personal goals.'
Katharina HOPPE - 'I love running with my Mummy and I have a hot chocolate with extra marshmallows afterwards!'
Lucy PHILLIPS (2nd Female 19:41 mins) Southampton Athletics Club - 'I love running and it's fun and a good atmosphere.'
Stanley PHILLIPS - 'I love beating my friends and getting a PB, which I got today; 20:14 mins.'
Happy 30th Birthday to Laura STANLEY-ADAMS today! She was celebrating with Sue STILEMAN's 'Couch to 5km' graduates and they were all looking forward to cake and bubbly after parkrun! Laura even had a bouquet of flowers and a 30-medal waiting for her at the finish line!
parkrun is loved by over a million people in the UK; because it gets people outdoors, it's fun, sociable, keeps you fit, is free, accessible and inclusive. Lots of love goes out to our amazing volunteers, who each week devote their time to support all the parkrunners through words of encouragement, claps and cheers. parkrun couldn't happen without you all!
