A grand 1006 runners enjoyed a fabulous morning on the Common today. Conditions were on our side - it was dry, sunny and warm with no wind, the birds were singing and there was the smell of freshly mown grass and the trees and plants are coming into bud. It doesn't get much better than this!
It certainly can't get much better for one runner today - Alex TEUTEN. He made the most of the conditions but spent the least time experiencing them as he flew around in a new Southampton course record of 14min 50 sec. Congratulations to Alex. The first female home was Sarah DOWLING in 18:50 which was a PB for her too.
There were plenty of other PBs this morning, all of them were personal milestones - well done to you all. There were plenty of us who didn't manage a PB this morning as well! What fun it was though to be out with 1000 friends on such a nice day.
Tomorrow is Mothering Sunday and I noticed that there were lots of mums running today with children - some were in buggies and others were running at arm's length whilst older children were in some cases leaving their mothers behind! Indeed, our very own RD today Tamsyn SMITH along with husband Stuart set us off on our way with their daughter almost a veteran parkrunner at 2 years old. What a great and productive way to spend time with children that is beneficial and fun for all! parkrun encourages families to run in a safe environment and certainly the children seem to enjoy being bounced around at speed! My own children are far too old to run with but I look forward to becoming a buggy-running granny in a few weeks time! The running buggy is ready and waiting.
It was great to see lots of families marshalling as well today. Please consider volunteering soon - contact email@example.com.
There is another opportunity for families to parkrun together this weekend - junior parkrun takes place at Riverside park at 9am on Sundays and is just 2km. Mum, you can sit and watch and have a rest for once and there is plenty of time to get home and enjoy breakfast made especially for you!
There were some big milestones this morning too. Congratulations to Lou FORDER on her 10th run, Alan STIMPSON, Michael O'DONOGHUE, Oleksandra PEDCHENKO, Ryan BAVERSTOCK, David STONE and Dominic WILLIAMS on their 50th, Annabel HODGSON, Jamie FOSTER and Victoria COLLINSON on their 100th and Alice JONES and Ben PITMAN who have made 250.
Big congratulations, but no T-shirt sadly, goes to our own Gareth JONES on his 400th run this morning! Gareth has completed 276 of these at Southampton, 77 at Eastleigh and has travelled as far afield as Russia, Poland and one of the furthest parkruns from here, Dunedin in NZ (twice!). He helps with set up and clear down every week, writes run reports and is altogether a parkrun passionista! Only another two years to that blue 500.
Enjoy the nice weather while it lasts and see you next week - oh and DFYB (no bar code, no result)
Happy, safe running.
