South Manchester parkrun – 18th June 2011

Dear runners, the South Manchester parkrun will be going ahead as usual this weekend, 18th June. We are awaiting confirmation from the park wardens before confirming which course we will be operating. The choice of course depends on whether or not the park is cleared from the weekends concert in time for Saturday. Further updates will be posted during the week here and on our facebook group. Important Update – 11th June run cancelled

Dear runners, we have been advised by the park wardens that due to the concert on Satruday 11th June there will be a large number of vehicles and other park visitors using the footpaths within the park. As we would be using the alternative lap route this has the potential to create some serious safety issues. After consulting with the team we have decided that for reasons of safety there will be no run on the 11th June. The next run will be on 18th June.

A list of alternative runs in the North West can be found at: http://www.parkrun.com/events/uk/northwestengland

Race Report No. 33

Grey clouds over Platt fields couldn't put off the spirit of the Parkrunners, with 66 runners turning out for our 33rd event. With the rain staying away the run got under way at the Lakeside centre with 15 runners taking part at South Manchester for the first time. The cooler conditions and flat terrain of Platt fields were ideal for setting a PB and 10 runners took advantage of this to set a new PB, congratulations to you all.

Robert White, of Buxton and District AC, took first place with  a time of 18:01, with Jackie Cordingley of Sale Harriers being the first female across the finish line in 22:03.

Congratulations to all 66 runners for taking part, we hope you enjoyed your run and look forward to welcoming you back to South Manchester next Saturday.

A big thank-you to all our volunteers for your support and for all the encouragement you give to the runners. If you would like to support the event by volunteering you can contact Yue Wang, the volunteer coordinator, via the VOLUNTEER tab above.

Happy running and see you all Lakeside next week.

Paul Arrowsmith and the South Manchester Parkrun team.

Big thanks to the Parkrun team

On behalf of all the runner who took part today,July 3rd, I would like to say, very well done to Paul and all the organizing team who managed yet again to put on a great run for us. It must be very daunting to arrive at a venue that you think is all ready to go and find that for reasons beyond your control you have to make a very hurried change to all your plans. I found it very impressive that the whole team very calmly got together and within a very short time produced an excellent alternative. Once again, very well done to all concerned who got stuck in and made it work for our benefit.

Event 12 Race Report

Hello everyone!

It was another cold and cloudy Saturday this week, but an amazing turnout of 81 runners and some pretty exciting happenings surely brightened the scene in Platt Fields Park!

First of all, well done to all the runners and volunteers for braving the weather and creating a friendly but competitive atmosphere! On a related note, some very kind acts were observed at the tail of the run, which emphasize the community spirit that Park Run is also about: The last person to cross the finish line was struggling towards the end of the run. Her two friends however joined her side and motivated and encouraged her to keep going until she reached the 5k. We think this deserves special recognition, because it highlights the run’s friendly and supportive environment, and that it is not about winning, but about commitment!

So, here are this week’s results, and we are happy to report that a record has been broken! In his first appearance Gareth Turner crossed the finish line after an astonishing 16 minutes and 57 seconds. Well done, Gareth! Steel City Striders’ Ben Beattie (18:04) and Phil Burns of the Stockport Harriers (18:27) came in second and third, respectively.

Joanne Wright (Steel City Riders) took it home for the women, with an impressive 22:31, ahead of Hannah Lawrence (22:48) and Sale’s Harriers’ Katherine Victoria Reece (23:35). Great job, ladies!

Other notable achievements:

Frank Cordingley recorded a performance of 78.67% in this week’s Age Graded competition.

In the points competition Michael Dunne has a lead of 25 points over second placed James Winstanley. Vivien Bartoli leads Theresa Fenton by 49 in the ladies competition.

24 runners established new personal bests this week, bringing the total number since the South Manchester started to 183. In this time, 364 runners from 37 different clubs have completed the race 766 times covering a distance of 3830 kilometers.

And finally, this week saw 26 first timers at the run. We hope to see them and everyone else again at the Lake Side Centre next Saturday fresh and early at 9AM for our next event! Until then- happy running!
