South Woodham Ferrers parkrun is cancelled on 6 June 2020: COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Event #107

After last week’s second anniversary and International Women’s day parkrun event at there may have been a slight case of a hangover at the South Woodham Ferrers parkrun event (or maybe it was more a case of unpredictable wet weather and lots of mud on the course amongst other things).

89812221_653072332170872_6708830506529587200_oDespite this a hardy group of 29 park runners braved the elements to complete the course. There were 4 first timers to the course and for 3 of them a first park run experience – we welcome Ben, William and Aidan to park run and hope that this will be the first of many runs both here and at other park runs. Also to our sole “tourist” Steve we hope you enjoyed our course and we will see you back soon.

We saw one PB achieved – Thomas took a huge one and a half minutes of his previous best which in challenging conditions was hugely impressive.

A huge thank you to our fantastic group of amazing volunteers – at one point it looked like we might have more volunteers than runners! Today 23 “high vis” warriors helped to make this event happen, and did so with huge smiles and encouragement for all the runners.

I know all the runners will join me in thanking for your support today – this week’s super stars were:
Clare ROWE • Jo BACKHOUSE • Paul BACKHOUSE • Helen HALL • Justin KENT • Mary BYE • Neil HOWARTH • Tracey WADE • Libby WADE • Stacey CARROLL • Daniel Gene HALL • Christopher WADE • Malcolm SMITH • Bob MASSEY • Luke ORCHARD • Ros LUCKMAN • David GAMLIN • Laurie HUGGINS • Matt LEE • Joe WARD • Patrick SUMNER • Ian MATHEWS • Sophie SMITH
As has been mentioned before please do consider offering to volunteer - there are a number of different roles and some also give you the opportunity to run as well as volunteer.

Finally a personal note from me – it is great to see so many family groups running (sometimes together but other times not so close...). For me I park run to (try and) keep fit but also to run with my sons – currently I have run with one 28 times and another 18 times and all of us together 17 times (yes, I worked it out..). Whilst this won’t be a record in any way it doesn’t take away from it being great to park run together. I would encourage you all to do the same although I know it is tough getting those teenagers out of bed on a Saturday morning!

Fingers crossed for next week and don’t forget pacer week is at the end of the month where hopefully there will loads of PB’s to get the bell ringing!

Huge thanks you to 100 parkrunners that took part in this event at South Woodham Ferrers, especially those that wore 'Tutus' or fancy dress!  It was a great atmosphere and so many of you choose to take selfies with our special IWD Frame - looking good ladies.

There were 11 First timers at our event, and two ladies that were totally new to parkrun - so welcome Hannah and Rebecca, we hope to see you again soon.

A parkrun regular, Jo celebrated her own milestone - her 50th parkrun.  Well done Jo!

Also, there were PB's - an amazing 9 people managed to achieve a new personal best, so congratulations to you all.  Hopefully the weather is changing, so a mild, and less wet conditions to enable our course to dry out a little.  It has certainly taken a battering this winter and spring!

Thank you to all the volunteers (including my long suffering husband and son - aka the tail walkers) that helped to make our 2nd anniversary and IWDparkrun event such a great day - you truly are hi-vis heroes.

SWF parkrun #105 – 29th February 2020 (Leap year parkrunday)

87803679_643235679821204_1450690401827553280_n

On Saturday we held our monthly 'chase the pacer' event - and despite the appalling conditions, South Woodham Ferrers parkrun welcomed 8 first timers, including Emma who decided to start her parkrun journey with us.

Puddles Puddles 1 Puddles 2 Puddles 3

Steven, Ian and Jenny all achieved a PB - which amazed us all given that our course is currently underwater in places, with very slippy muddy sections (aka the approach to Bob's Hill)

It's hard to believe that just a year ago the course record was set by Scott Cousins at just over 16 minutes. Obviously conditions were much drier last year!

Congratulation to Gary on reaching his 100th parkrun milestone on Saturday (and volunteering as a pacer too)!  Also, another regular celebrating an unofficial milestone was Ros (at Marshal point #2 aka the Bench). she is usually seen and heard shouting out words of encouragement to all parkrunners, joggers and walkers. Great work Ros.

Volunteers 2

Next Saturday is our 2nd Anniversary (as well as International Women's Day) - so it's time to celebrate.... dressing up is optional (but encouraged), and yes there will be cake!

See you there - Helen, Co-Event Director SWF parkrun

22/2/20 SWF parkrun run report Event #104

After a rest for the course last week it certainly felt like storm Dennis was still hanging around for event number 104 - the wind was brutal on the home stretch back after wading through the mud turning into Bob's hill.

rr 1

Despite all this 88 people braved the elements and ran, jogged and walked the course to get their weekly parkrun fix. We welcomed 17 first timers with 2 completing their very first event and tourists from Ipswich and Yorkshire.

High fives for the 7 who recorded new Personal Bests in difficult conditions. Representatives of 12 different clubs took part.

rr3
Next week is a special date (apart from the leap year) as it is the monthly pacer event so hopefully the weather will behave and the PB bell will ring out.

Special thanks to the 21 fantastic volunteers who avoided being blown over and made the event possible.

SWF parkrun #103 – 8th February 2020

This week 125 runners completed their parkrun at South Woodham Ferrers, of which an amazing 31 were first timers to the course. Of these first timers 9 were completely new to parkrun, running their first ever event and the other 22 were tourists visiting our course. We hope you all enjoyed your run and would love to welcome you back soon.

This week 15 different clubs were represented.

Big thumbs up to the 18 participants who recorded a new PB this week. This really is a good achievement seeing that the conditions are still so muddy. Just imagine what you’ll be able to do when the course dries out. Well done all!

There were no milestone runs this parkrunday, but a couple of our regular runners are in touching distance of a milestone. It’d be great if you run your milestones at South Woodham and we’ll help you celebrate with a big round of applause!

I also wanted to call out the 18 Junior (under 18) participants who took part today. I love seeing the younger ones take part. All too often we see complaints that children are not active enough. parkrun is a perfect opportunity for children and teenagers to get out and exercise and as it’s free it is accessible to all. I love seeing the determination on their little faces and a young participant (11-14 age category) really tested my endurance and competitive side today as we kept going past each other. Great effort to all the young ones!

Many thanks to our amazing 26 volunteers today without whom we would not be able to put on your weekly run. Please do consider offering to volunteer every so often; there are also a number of roles that would give you the opportunity to run as well as volunteer. The team can give further information if you’re interested. As a regular volunteer and parkrunner I can highly recommend it.

Many thanks to this week’s super stars:

Ann THOMAS • Jason FINCH • Melanie CARRINGTON • Paul BACKHOUSE • Sharon SANSOM • Nicky LOW • Justin KENT • Neil HOWARTH • Jim HOLLAND • Paula HOPE • Melanie CROUCH • Peter CROUCH • Nicola FINCH • Sharon BOWERS • Nathalie VAN LAGEN • Malcolm SMITH • Bob MASSEY • Richard BRETT • Val BRAZIER • Jenny SHEPPARD • David BOWDEN • David GAMLIN • Sally KINSLEY • Laurie HUGGINS • Louise COPAS • Max CARRINGTON

Don’t forget South Woodham Ferrers will be celebrating it’s 2nd anniversary on 7th March with fancy dress optional but definitely encouraged! Go on - you know you want to!

Nathalie
