South Woodham Ferrers parkrun #120 – 16th October 2021

morning geese

Despite being well into October conditions remained pretty much ideal for park running (12 degrees with cloud cover and minimal wind) with very little mud to slow runners down. All in all a lovely morning for a run!

In total this week 89 people ran, jogged and walked the course of whom 5 were first timers to the course – in particular we welcome Sarah and Sandra to their first park run experience with Sandra doubling up with her first volunteering role as one of our tail walkers.

Overall a huge 18 personal bests were recorded at our course (20% of the field!) and whilst we can’t go through all of the PBs achieved but regular parkrunner Ricky Nelson achieved a new PB going under 20 minutes for the first time - a massive result.

There were also two milestone runs today with Chris Webster completing his 50th park run (although I have been reliably informed there are many others that haven’t been counted) and junior runner Billy made his 10th park run.

We also had a number of visitors to the run from across Essex and into Kent however, Mel from the USA (via Hertfordshire) gets the shout out this week for racking up the travel miles.

As always a huge thank you to our fantastic group of amazing volunteers – today our 23 volunteers not only co-ordinated and ran the event, but did so with huge smiles and encouragement for all the runners. I know all the runners will join me in thanking all of the following for your support today :

Simon CARRINGTON • Clare ROWE • Paul BACKHOUSE • Helen HALL • Kevin GIBSON • Samantha WALTON • Jill LANGTON • Jim HOLLAND • Paula HOPE • Tracey WADE • Libby WADE • Jeanie HUGHES • Bob MASSEY • Richard BRETT • Angela HOCKLEY • Joseph HOCKLEY • Evie LANGTON • David GAMLIN • Sally KINSLEY • Laurie HUGGINS • Chris HART • Colin BANKS • Sandra EWERS

This week I wanted to highlight three of our volunteers. Sandra as mentioned above was a first time volunteer but in addition Sally was funnel manager for the very first time – it’s absolutely fabulous to see newcomers to volunteering and others trying new roles.

In addition we had a volunteer milestone this week with Clare completing her 25th event as one of our timekeepers – fantastic achievement.

As has been mentioned before please do consider offering to volunteer - there are a number of different roles and some also give you the opportunity to run as well as volunteer!

See everyone next Saturday and as always don’t forget your barcode!

Any Run Director that discovers a skeleton roster mid-week may feel somewhat nervous as the impending 'parkrunday' approaches - and some very despite pleas across social media platforms usually follows! At this moment, we still need pre-event set-up (you get to run too), as well as a tail walker (or two) is still required for next week roster.. and if anyone would like to write the run report - just let me know.

South Woodham Ferrers parkrun #118 2nd October 2021

Hiya! Welcome to this week’s Run Report by yours truly, David Hayday, your guest editor this week.

Me messing around as usual and Mel trying desperately not to be in the same photo!

Me messing around as usual and Mel trying desperately not to be in the same photo!

This week was my first visit to South Woodhams Ferrers parkrun and I have to say it really was a smashing visit. For those that don’t know me, I’m the Event Director at Billericay parkrun and a parkrun Event Support Ambassador for a cluster of parkruns and junior parkruns, including, this one!

early morning

My first observation on Saturday was how well Tracey did in booking some calm and dry weather - result!
Then there was my lock-up envy. Oh, my word, how brilliant to have all your gear right by the start and finish area. That’s going straight to my Christmas list – please Santa

Once I stopped drooling over the lock-up and as the minutes clicked nearer and nearer to the magic hour, walkers, joggers and runners started to appear from all over in readiness for event number 118.

Volunteers
As a huge fan of volunteering, it’s always brilliant to meet new parkrun teams and Saturday was no exception. Great Hi-Viz heroes at every turn. From marshals to timekeepers, scanners to finish tokens, photographer to RD and Tail Walkers with tails, everyone was absolutely brilliant!
On behalf of the 77, thank you, thank you, thank you!
If you haven’t volunteered at parkrun, do give it a go. Just drop a line to southwoodhamferrers@parkrun.com with your name, barcode number and the week(s) you’d like to help. You so won’t regret it!

All that aside, what was my prevailing memory of South Woodham Ferrers parkrun? It could easily have been the lovely course, the great views, the fact that it wasn’t a great big crowded event. However, by far the best bit was the great people, the smiles at every turn, the brilliant volunteers and a sense that everyone really loved the event and had each other’s back.

South Woodham Ferrers parkrun #116 – 18th September 2021

It really was a glorious sunny Saturday morning - but I had a slight 'wobble' when looking at the finish tokens! It is clear that weeks of cleaning after each event is taking it's toll, which may result in some not being able to be scanned... I think we need to purchase some replacements in the near future. It is a shame some parkrunners take the tokens home (maybe by accident, maybe as a sovereign) SO on behalf of all parkrun teams (everywhere), please if you have taken a token - take it back on your next visit (we are always so happy when someone does).

This week's parkrun was full of tourists (albeit parkrunners for parkruns nearby) it was lovely to see people visiting from Hockley, Burnham and Maldon - I may do a bit of Essex parkrun tourism myself in the near future too!

We welcomed 6 people to parkrun as first timers - welcome Caitlin, Chloe, Kathryn, Sarah, John and Samuel - we look forward to seeing you again soon. There were 23 people that recorded new personal bests - special congratulations to Nick and Lou from South Woodham Runners well done on your amazing pb's.

There was also some parkrun milestones to celebrate - Congratulation to Laura and to Tracey on 50 parkruns!

Looking through the results - it will shortly be time to congratulate a few more parkrunners that regularly run at South Woodham Ferrers. Please do let the RD know on the day, we love to include your 'milestone' in our run brief!

128 people ran, jogged and walked the course on Saturday, helped in part by our lovely group of volunteers - For our team of 18 Hi-vis-heroes much love, and special thanks from me for making Saturday like a walk in the park!

And lastly, before I sign off and hand over to Tracey for the next two weeks - I'd just like to say it was really great to welcome Jeanie back to parkrun.... It was smashing seeing you and the whole team look forward to seeing you out at parkrun again (soon).

That's all for now,
