There was plenty to celebrate, with cake and 287 enthusiastic participants, including 22 first timers, all supported by 21 willing volunteers – not a record attendance, but our biggest anniversary attendance to date and our 15th largest overall. In addition, we had visitors from Bath and Melbourne, Australia – welcome to Stormont!

Thankfully the torrential rain from earlier in the morning cleared up, leaving us with some slight drizzle, which wasn’t enough to dampen the party spirit!

Well done to Julia Tolan and Ciaran Crossey, who completed their 100th milestone runs, celebrating the event with their Lough Mossketeer teammates. Thanks guys for the delicious cake. Big well done also to Brian and Sarah on reaching the 50 milestone.

Stormont parkrun started on the 29th August 2015, and since then has developed a community of dedicated and loyal participants and volunteers. Everyone involved in the operation of Stormont parkrun has played their part in creating a very special, welcoming event, highlighted by the facts below:

  • We have grown significantly in the last 4 years, from an average of 120 participants in year one to 225 per week in the past 12 months
  • Over the past 4 years, 6980 different participants have crossed the Stormont finish line a total of more than 40,000 times
  • 15 participants at the 4th anniversary event also took part in event number one
  • 2584 people have registered Stormont as their home parkrun

We are lucky to have a great team of loyal volunteers, who dedicate large amounts of their time to the smooth running of Stormont parkrun, and we would like to say a huge thank you to each and every one of the 352 people who have helped out since inception. However, on our anniversary, we’d like to give special mentions to a few of our unsung ‘high viz heroes’, who well and truly go above and beyond the call of duty:

  • Max McRoberts, Stormont stalwart who, for health reasons, can’t participate in the event, but who has volunteered a staggering 88 times, providing post parkrun refreshments
  • Jimmy and Una McNeill – Jimmy is responsible for constructing our amazing, and very colourful, finish funnel, which he sets up each week, while Una takes on the arduous task of washing up over 200 cups each week
  • Trevor Moutray, who provides the oranges that we all look forward to and enjoy at the end of each run

As Stormont parkrun continues to grow, we are going to need additional volunteers to ensure the safety of all participants on the course and would welcome new volunteers to join the team; it’s easy to get involved – just contact stormont@parkrun.com. Full training will be provided for all roles.
