Stretford parkrun to organise free 5km run as part of the nation’s biggest sports day, I Am Team GB
Stretford parkrun will host an I Am Team GB parkrun on Saturday 27 August to get more people active in the local community and celebrate Team GB's achievements at the Rio 2016 Games.
The event is part of I Am Team GB - a nationwide campaign that has inspired thousands of UK clubs to open their doors to new participants. This campaign is brought to you by ITV and The National Lottery, working with the British Olympic Association, UK Sport and supported by Join In, to inspire the Great British public to take part in sport.
What's more, many of the nation's Olympians, fresh from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, will be attending events across the nation to give people the opportunity to stand shoulder to shoulder with Team GB.
Stretford parkrun is proud to fly the I Am Team GB flag in the Stretford area. As part of our usual Saturday morning free timed 5km run, our special I Am Team GB event will celebrate the achievements of our Olympic heroes as well as promoting participation in grassroots sport.
“Come along, join in and get involved in this fantastic event at Stretford parkrun. Whether you run, jog or walk everyone is welcome at Stretford parkrun,” said Jamie Barry, Events Director for Stretford parkrun.
“We are so pleased to put on this great event and be part of I Am Team GB,” said Jamie Barry. “Sport brings communities closer together and we are immensely proud at Stretford parkrun to be part of this nationwide celebration of sport. We celebrate the people of Stretford and beyond who volunteer at Stretford parkrun and parkruns around the UK promoting health, wellbeing and inclusivity. Their commitment mirrors that of our wonderful Team GB heroes.”
“We are pleased to welcome our Olympic hero, Joanna Rowsell Shand MBE to Stretford parkrun as part of the I Am Team GB event. Having a reigning Olympic, European and Commonwealth Games champion visit us is an Olympic dream come true,” added Jamie Barry.

The National Lottery
I Am Team GB celebrates the support the public gives to Team GB’s athletes just by playing The National Lottery. During the four-year buildup to Rio 2016, National Lottery players contributed £80m a year towards the Olympic and Paralympic cause. In addition, The National Lottery has contributed more than £4bn to enable grassroots sports participation across the UK.
As the UK's biggest commercial broadcaster, ITV wants to use the scale of its network and much loved talent to encourage the nation to get out and get active on Saturday 27 August, giving us all the opportunity to be happier and healthier.
Join In is a London 2012 legacy charity that puts more volunteers into community sport. Join In helps clubs set up their I Am Team GB events while offering support and practical advice. To find volunteering opportunities near you, visit joininuk.org.
The British Olympic Association (BOA), UK Sport, and Sport England are also supporters of I Am Team GB.
