Another Brilliant tourist write up….AWESOME

Saturday 15th June.

It was a sparse day for local parkruns, Heslington’s course having collapsed, Wakefield cancelled in order to host the Race for Life and York Knavesmire only open to runners with four legs. So, with a blue (or possibly grey) sky overhead and Red Kites circling over the suburbs of Leeds, it was time to visit Temple Newsam. And what a gem it is! Set amidst rolling parkland, the course wends its way past an impressive Tudor/Jacobean mansion, along Pegasus path (no winged horses, but plenty of longhorn cattle in an adjacent field), along a grassy path (with only a glimpse of the main road) and past a pond with ducks and moorhens. And, if that is not enough, the second lap is even better, doing a detour through a wooded area towards the finish with rumours of a coffee bar at the end!

So, amidst warm(ish) sunshine and a bit of a breeze, 174 runners assembled from all four corners of the earth (ie York, Bradford, Melbourne and Brisbane among other exotic places) to run, walk and jog around the course. parkrunners are a friendly crowd and today’s were no exception. After a round of applause for our milestone runners and for visitors, we were off to run the 322nd Temple Newsam parkrun.

Special thanks are due to all our volunteers. We really do appreciate what you do for us! This week, volunteers included:

Chris BERRY, Ronnie Sam BRAY, Ronnie BRAY, Melvyn BURTON, Sharon BUTTERFIELD, Laura CATLIN, Wendy CHAPMAN, Georgie COOPER, Clare COOPER, Paul DURKIN, Katherine FENTON, Rob FORD, Francis JACKSON, Shelly JAMES, Daniel JOHNSON, Gillian LAMBERT, Lynsey LYON, Paul MCGREEVY, Alison O'HEARNE, Gareth RENNISON, Dominic THOMAS and Richard WHITEHOUSE

Congratulations to all our milestone runners, first timers and those gaining PBs.

This week 31 people ran Temple Newsam for the first time (and also therefore gained a PB!), 25 people gained a new personal best time (PB) and we had two people completing milestone runs: Lee Kitching with 50 runs and Stephen Milner with 100.

#Drumroll and three cheers!

Now for the results.

Male placings:

First past the post in a time of 18mins 18 was Samuel Dent, followed by Kieron Brown from York Acorn AC in 18mins 28. Dylan Williams from Leeds University Cross Country club came in 3rd place with a time of 19mins 43.

Female placings:

Jasmine Trott came in first woman in a time of 21mins 02 followed by Sarah Stephenson with a time of 24mins 21 and Rebecca Millington of Bolton United Harriers and AC with a time of 24min 45.

Well done to all of you.

Why not come and join us again next Saturday. Bring a friend (you know it will do them good to be woken up and dragged outside; that’s what friends are for) - you might even like to join our band of happy volunteers - there are plenty of opportunities to help out and we are always pleased to see new recruits. Just take a look at our park run web page and send us an email at templenewsamhelpers@parkru

Lovely Tourist Write up… Enjoy

As a tourist writing a run report I should probably start with something along the lines of it being a long-held dream for me to visit Temple Newsam parkrun. However, the truth must intervene at this point. At 8 o’clock this morning I’d never actually heard of it! On very rare occasions I plan my tourism meticulously, some of the time I decide on the Friday night but the most common occurrence is seeing what time I wake up on Saturday morning and making a plan from there. This morning I woke up at home in Leicestershire and was due to be in Newcastle by mid-afternoon so the plan was to jump on the M1, head north and come 8am figure out where I could get to just in time for parkrun. As I approached Sheffield it was decision time and Temple Newsam jumped off the tourist tool (a fantastic site for those seeking parkrun venues when out and about) as a logical option. Sometimes winging it can backfire but today was quite the opposite – what a cracking event in a stunning location!

Run Director Andy briefed us on the “Yorkshire flat” course and this being my 8th visit to a Yorkshire parkrun I knew I was in for a good workout. He also included a tenuous reference to it being event number 321, the script for which will probably end up in a Dusty Bin.  Although nobody owned up to it in the brief four people completed their first ever parkrun today. Well done to Alex HILBERT, Ryan HIGGINS, Elliott TOBIN and Ben TOOTLE who all remarkably finished within 55 seconds of each other. There were ten members of the 250 Club running today along with 38 from the 100 Club and 33 from the 50 Club including Phil EDEN who completed his 50th parkrun today, 47 of which have been at Temple Newsam. There were also six members of the junior 10 Club including Niamh WILSON who finished her tenth 5km parkrun today, congratulations!

Michael VARGAS of Hyde Park Harriers led us home in an impressive 17.43 with Daniel LINSTRUM and Patrick CHILTON the second and third male finishers respectively. Aisling WALL of Horsforth Harriers was the first female and fourth overall with Jasmine TROTT and Amanda SPENCER the second and third females to finish. As well as the four brand new parkrunners there were 36 other runners who visited Temple Newsam for the first time today, I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did! 33 people recorded a Temple Newsam PB today including the aforementioned Phil EDEN on his 50th – two slices of cake for you Sir!

As ever, your parkrun only takes place thanks to the wonderful army of volunteers who make it happen come rain or shine. Thanks today go to Rachel BEVAN, Roslyn BIRCH, Ronnie BRAY, Bradley CLARKE, Georgie COOPER, Clare COOPER, Sue CRABTREE, Kate CRONSHAW, Andy DARBY, Huw DAVIES, Graham FISHER, Stephen FLANAGAN, Angela FLETCHER, Nigel FULLER, Christopher GILL, Rob HARBOURNE, Francis JACKSON, Shelly JAMES, Gillian LAMBERT, Moira LENAGHAN, Ewan LYNCH, Lynsey LYON, Alison O'HEARNE, Katy PAGE, Valerie PELL, Angie SELLERS, Dominic THOMAS and Richard WHITEHOUSE.

If you’d like to volunteer and give something back to this wonderful event drop an email to templenewsamhelpers@parkrun.com and get involved – it really is just as much fun as running!

Thank you Temple Newsam for a lovely morning run, I’ll be recommending it to friends and fellow tourists for sure!

Has Winter finally run its course at Temple Newsam parkrun?

Temple Newsam parkrun
Event number 266
7th April 2018

A lovely spring morning finally greeted us on Saturday! Hopefully the endless laps of a snow-laden route B or the worry of how many layers we will need to fend off the elements are now a distant memory (although the rain did put in a cameo appearance towards the end).

Well done to Melvin Burton on his 400th parkrun. Billy Moffat also clocked up his 50th. Well done also to Sharon Butterfield on being parkrunner of the month.  Many thanks to Danny Kelly for all the pictures this week.

Walking, jogging and running in the air

It was a very colourful festive themed takeover by Kippax Harriers this week. Amongst the 177 participants we were honoured to have Elves, Santas and Snowmen all taking time out from their busy schedules to join us.

We returned to a muddy Route A with a locked gate for runners to contend with. This one-off steeple chase element probably accounts for just 9 PBs this week. Kate Winstanley ran under 27 minutes for the first time. Neil Pimblott ran his 3rd PB on the bounce. Helen Evans hit the 25 minute mark on her 10th run. Mark Raffaelli, Becca Hattrell and Harry Trapps clocked up their 50th runs. Judy Lankester and Fiona Robins ran their 100th. Well done everyone!

First run in… Movember? Event report number 244

Temple Newsam parkrun
Event number 244
4th November 2017

How many running events can you fit in Temple Newsam park at the same time?  Good question and today we found out that the answer is at least two because today we shared part of our route with this year's Leeds MoRun (supporting the Movember Foundation for men's health).  However, despite the exciting MoRuns tearing down our hill during the event, we managed to avoid any collisions and benefited from lots more supporters today!

This week 149 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 19 were first timers and 26 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 13 different clubs took part. As always parkrun has runners and walkers at all stages of their personal journeys and today featured Buddy Johnston running his 10th "adult" parkrun as a junior and John Robson, his 322nd passing the 1,000 parkrun miles mark!  Buddy is from Bramley Breezers and we welcome 12 visiting today.

Our 24 volunteers today did a flawless job and it is because of them that parkrun can happen in Temple Newsam week-in week-out.  If you haven't ever volunteered yet, please give it a try, you will get lots of support and encouragement from an amazing team.

Temple Newsam parkrun report 9th September

Temple Newsam parkrun
Event number 237

It was a bit of a wet start this morning, but undaunted, 158 people turned up to run, jog and walk the course, with a few more being pushed around in buggies too.

This week we had 25 first timers and representatives from 16 different clubs. We also had some visitors from Brazil - please drop in again next time you are in the area!

Some important milestones this week. Former regular Richard Mann returned to his old stomping ground to celebrate his 250th. He was proudly sporting his own parkrun tattoo (presumably temporary, but who knows?) featuring the milestone vests. Great to see you again Richard (and Helen). We also had Stephen Milner and Sam Cussen donning the 50th parkrun vests.  Well done everyone!

A great turnout from the volunteers this week, 29 in all, co-ordinated by Andy Darby the RD for the day. The runners got plenty of enthusiastic encouragement from all the volunteers en route. Nice to see Sam's dog Harvey entering into the volunteering spirit too with a hi-viz jacket. Thanks for all your time and effort everyone. Special thanks to Gill and Ronnie who turn up week in week out, rain and shine and do a lot of work behind the scenes to keep the show on the road/pavement/muddy path.

Please consider volunteering yourself in the near future if you haven't done so recently. We really need your help. It's a great experience and there are roles to suit everyone. If anyone fancies a job share in the run report writing role there's a vacancy there too.

We had 25 runners with new PBs this week. Well done all of you. Some notables amongst these were John Holland, Liam Durkin, John Walsh and Graham Bowden who shaved considerable chunks off their previous bests.

Good luck to all runners embarking on half marathons tomorrow at the Vale of York and Great North Run.
