Temple Newsam parkrun Report 19th August

Temple Newsam parkrun
Event number 234
19th August 2017

Firstly, many thanks go to Crossgates Harriers this week for successfully staging their take over and introducing the Superheroes theme- there were some great costumes on show.

This week 182 people ran, jogged, walked (and possibly flew) the course, of whom 19 were first timers. Representatives of 25 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 34 volunteers:

John Paul STUTTARD • Sarah MARQUIS-LINLEY • Melvyn BURTON • Jo MOORWOOD • Ronnie BRAY • Gillian HALL • Paul ADAMSON • Graham WILSON • Julie SMITH • Alan SMITH • Gillian LAMBERT • Shaun LOFTUS • Kate CRONSHAW • Chris ADAMSON • Bradley CLARKE • Louise CLARKE • Lynn PARSONS • James CLARKE • Chris MEADLEY • Julie WILSON • Christian JACKSON • Andy DARBY • Cirilo PALENZUELA • Katherine FENTON • David HUDSON • Loz DARBY • Paula WATSON • Andrew HARVEY • Janine LEE • Claire MALTAS • Lourdes MARQUIS-LINLEY • Matty CAMPBELL • Hannah LONG • Imogen HESTER

Thanks to all volunteers for helping out. Please consider putting yourself forward for volunteering roles -you are all Superheroes in our eyes and you don't even have to dress up for it (most weeks).

Also featured this week was the popular re-introduction of the original Route A course, a little flatter and perhaps faster. This seemed to help a whopping 39 of you to record new Personal Bests. Superhuman efforts all round!

Jason Firth clocked up his 50th run and Nathan Vaughn his 100th. Well done both!

Temple Newsam parkrun
Event number 233
12th August 2017

Welcome to this week's run report from Temple Newsam. This week 167 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 18 were first timers. This was a good turnout given the holiday period. Twenty eight of us recorded new Personal Bests this week, perhaps inspired by the World Athletics Championships in London. But unlike Mo and Usain, we always have next week to give it another try!

Representatives of 18 different clubs took part, with quite a few visitors here taking part in the Leeds Race Series. Good to see you all, please come again; where else can you experience hills like ours?!

Congratulations to Laura Gibson who ran her 10th parkrun.

The event was made possible by 21 volunteers:

Paul MCGREEVY • Tim SEDDON • Ronnie BRAY • Ronnie Sam BRAY • Anna MILBURN • Gillian LAMBERT • Daniel JOHNSON • Karly FOX • Savannah FOX • Teresa GRANNER • Andy DARBY • Georgia ALTON • Christopher RICHARDSON • Loz DARBY • Mr Sam CUSSEN • Joanne O'HARA • Linda HSIAO HICK • Laura COYLE • Joseph CROMACK • Amy RUSSELL • Stephen FLANAGAN

Thanks to everyone for helping out, you all did a great job. Please consider volunteering here. It is easy and fun and is your good deed for the day sorted before lunchtime! The volunteers are a friendly bunch and make everyone welcome. More importantly, parkrun relies on your support to keep the show on the road.

Please remember that the Colton Road entrance will be closed this week to cars this week, please use the Temple Newsam Road entrance (or walk!).

Crossgates Harriers take over this week with a Superheroes theme, so don't forget your outfits if you have them. Anyone caught flying around the course will be disqualified though...

Rain? What rain?

When everyone woke up this morning and looked out of the window, what they saw was the kind of rain that is so intense that it seems there are no gaps between the drops.  It appears to be a solid wall of water!  Some people would take one look and say “you have to be kidding” and spend an extra hour in bed and not bother with parkrun.  Then, there are those who would say, "It’s parkrun day!”.  To them a weekend isn’t a weekend without parkrun and as for the rain, hey, it might keep you cool.

Any experienced runner ought to know that actually, it’s not unpleasant to run in the rain. It can feel liberating and also cooling on a summer's day, but spare a thought for the volunteers.  Standing around in heavy rain waiting for the runners to come round again and then with watches or scanners being there for the full duration, these are the heroes who make parkrun happen week-in week-out, whatever the weather.  Today our team of volunteers was ably led by Run Director, Andy “Shouty Mc Shout Face” Darby.

parkrun 22 july

When we started running today it seemed that the rain disappeared.  Was this some strange anomaly that somehow means that it only rains on you when you are standing still? No, it simply means that it stopped raining.  Those of us who turned up can say “bah hoo” to those who stayed in bed because we enjoyed a pleasant run on a warm, but not too warm summers day, through the spectacular grounds of Temple Newsam.

As for the runners that did turn up, there were 121 of you this morning which included 6 first timers (at any parkrun) and no less than 19 personal bests.

Finally, here are the full stats:

BOOM!

Another go at the infamous route "C" course today because our regular route seemed to be blocked by an industrial scale sub-woofer BOOM, being installed for the "Cocoon in the Park" event later today . The event today was led ably by Run Director David Mellor and his most excellent band of volunteers, BOOM. Now this was the first time I had run route "C" and can testify it has its own challenges such as the long uphill trail through the woods. Despite that there were still no less than 17 PBs so well done runners BOOM. The event was photographed by the very excellent Malcolm Lavery, so keep a lookout on the Facebook page.
Finally, I know I am going to be in the Governor's bad books for nicking his catchphrase (word), BOOM, but I don't care because it was a BOOMing good morning.

Temple Newsam Run Report 10th June – The English Summer

The quintessential English summer:  the raindrops splashing on the pavement, and bouncing off the window ledge so it’s the first thing you hear when you wake up. The sounds that say, on a Saturday morning as loud as can be said “stay in bed, stay in bed!”.  There is however, something different going on and there is, dare I say it, a breed apart, those who say: “It’s Saturday, yay, it’s parkrun day!"  No less than 224 such individuals turned up at Temple Newsam this morning, not to mention a host of selfless and dedicated volunteers.

DSC03109 copy

When the sun is shining, the volunteers, especially those who turn out week after week to make the event happen, are incredible, but on days like today, mere superlatives don’t say enough!  Emma Longfellow our Run Director today, did a fantastic job orchestrating everything in the rain and keeping the wet from reducing the announcement sheet to paper pulp.  Because, on our first day back after a week off, there were a lot of announcements.

There was a handful of milestones today, firstly John-Paul O'Toole ran his 200th run (not an official parkrun milestone but 200 is surely worth a mention) and no less than four people running their 50th: Joanne O’Hara, Susan Trott and the newly married, Mr and Mrs Jane & Carl Surtees.  Also, receiving her award was our parkrun volunteer of the month, Claire Kenny, who has consistently offered to help out. Well done to you all.  Also a Happy Birthday to Richard Whitehouse and Shaun Loftus who ran today.

We were visited by a contingent from the Allerton Church of England Primary School Mini Mermaids, who ran their first ever 5k this morning.  By the smiles on their faces, they had a great time completing Temple Newsam parkrun.  You are all most welcome and we look forward to seeing you again.

A reminder that next week we are inviting people to raid their attics, dust off those shoulder pads and don their best (or worst), 1980s outfits.  We will also be running route “C”, which takes you round unexplored parts of the Temple Newsam estate (so we need plenty of marshals to make sure no one gets lost in the wilderness).

Finally, the official statistics are as follows:

Temple Newsam parkrun report 13th May 2017

Even with the Leeds Half Marathon looming tomorrow we still had an impressive turn out of 200 runners. We had a brilliant team of volunteers today and Richard Mann, the RD was asked to pass on thanks to our brilliantly supportive marshals by a couple of visitors from York parkrun. We have a great culture of mutual support and encouragement at Temple Newsam parkrun and long may this continue – volunteers, you are all amazing!

Today we had a brilliant milestone when Emma Longfellow – a very frequent volunteer, ran her 100th parkrun. Well done Emma!

Emma 100

Best of luck to all those running the Leeds Half on Sunday and remember, you will have to wait two weeks to show off your finishers' t-shirts because there is no Temple Newsam parkrun next week (20th May).

So, see you in two weeks and in the meantime, here are the stats:

Record breakers

In the words of Barry Clarke our Run Director, today’s Temple Newsam parkrun was a bit of a celebration. We welcomed back those in our number who had ran the London Marathon last weekend and there they were, resplendent in their finishers t-shirts (at least, those who remembered them). A massive well done to all the finishers; you think a 5K is hard, try a marathon!

Today we also had a record breaker in our midst. That’s right, a fully Guinness certified world record was broken in London last Sunday by our very own Terry Midgley (who is often seen finishing first at Temple Newsam parkrun) who is now the fastest man ever to run a marathon dressed as a chef! If you think that’s impressive, know that to qualify for that particular record you have to carry a pan weighing no less than 3 KG. Well done Terry, you are officially a legend! (Terry is raising money for Wheatfields Hospice). DSC03090 v2

Many of us aren’t world record breakers but remember, parkrun is about you and your own personal goals. We had a total of 35 runners achieve new personal bests (which are really personal records) here at Temple Newsam today and that shows the true value of parkrun - you are all record breakers!

STAC Easter Takeover

Welcome to Easter 2017 and the annual St Theresa's AC Easter takeover at Temple Newsam parkrun. St Theresa's is a friendly, local running club with more than 200 members of all abilities based in Crossgates, Leeds; whether you're an experienced runner or just starting out, joining a club is a fantastic way to improve your running and make some great new friends in the process.

STAC Takeover

Boosted by the promise of free chocolate, 249 runners turned up for Temple Newsam parkrun number 218. At least 44 were running here for the first time, while milestone runs at 100 for Michael Dean and 50 for Wayne Chappelow mean both can now claim the coveted milestone T-shirts. Honourable mentions also to Nicholas Brady, running Tempie for the first time for his 200th parkrun after 199 previous runs at Woodhouse Moor, and Ken Fox running his 350th parkrun (to go with 533 registered freedom runs).

After a brief from RD Emma with a bit of an egg-cess of egg-based puns (that's all you're getting from me!), runners set off supported by STAC pacers running at minute intervals from 20 minutes up to 36 minutes. Congratulations to all of the 36 achieving personal bests, and special mentions to two young ladies sharing the same forename: Paige Phelan, daughter of first-place finisher Ross, who completed her first parkrun aged 5; and nine-year-old Paige Gall who completed today's run as part of a sponsored series raising money for Diabetes UK.

Next week there is the small matter of a gentle stroll around the nation's capital... Good luck to all friends of Temple Newsam parkrun running the London Marathon next week.

Well done everyone!
