We have been to assess the course this morning and whilst we believe if we were to use our alternative start/finish area in the rugby club field the entire course would be runnable, we have unfortunately had to cancel tomorrows run.
Lucifer Bridge was damaged in last weekend’s flooding and as such has become too dangerous to pass. Loose slats on the bridge present a serious trip hazard; whilst we were assessing the bridge a pedestrian fell flat on their face, with potentially 500+ participants passing over the bridge on two occasions the risk for serious injury is too high.
We have informed the KCC who are responsible for the maintenance of the bridge and hope that remedial works will be carried out as soon as possible. In the meantime, I am looking at the potential of an alternative course that avoids Lucifer Bridge, but need to establish rights of way / Land owner permission and appropriate risk assessments – this takes a bit of time.
If possible, we are looking to still run on New Year’s Day, it is one of our favourite runs of the year, but can only do so if it is safe to do so. We will of course let you know as soon as we know but it is likely to be mid afternoon on New Year’s Eve.
