Torbay Velopark parkrun
Event number 124
4th May 2019

It goes without saying that I think we have a fantastic parkrun. There are so many friendly regulars that it’s like being part of a community with so many people to say hello to and chat to and while there are many reasons that people come along every week it is so much fun to be part of - and not just because Simon Gilboy suits every fancy dress that I make home wear.

But the serious part is that without volunteers we can’t do it. I did wonder on Friday whether it would be better to cancel the parkrun for the following day. The Run Director on the day is responsible for ensuring that it is safe to put the event on. We MUST have sufficient marshals out on the course and if an incident occurs they will get on the radio or make a phone call and help can be out there immediately and we have had incidents that required calling an ambulance. So I reduced the timekeepers to two and kept my fingers crossed that I was able to produce accurate results, the DofE students acted as marshals along with supervision as they are required to have, we had one barcode scanner from the start and two runners/barcode scanners. If it hadn’t been for two people who stepped in last minute I would have cancelled which is definitely not what I want.

So I want to say a massive thank you to my 24 volunteers below, thank you for signing up and for putting up with me changing the roster several times. It has been said before but if everyone volunteered every 10 or 12 weeks we’d be fully supported. Please help us Run Directors to continue to hold the amazing parkrun that we’ve got.

This week 346 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 47 were first timers and 110 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 23 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 24 volunteers:
