Torbay Velopark Run Report 4th January 2020 – by Heather Green

Happy New Year Parkrunners… 4 days in and how many of you have kept to your New Year’s running resolutions?

I’m aiming to run 30 parkruns in 2020, at least 1 new parkrun a month and to volunteer 12 times to join the 25 Parkrun Volunteer Club! So, having completed the New Year’s Day Parkrun Double at Killerton and Haldon Forest, I was determined to keep up the momentum and try out a new Parkrun course today. A regular at Haldon, Torbay Velopark was my “Nearest Event Not Done Yet” so off I set along the A38 towards Paignton.

Really easy to find, plenty of parking nearby and access to the facilities at the Leisure Centre, a warm welcome awaits from what looked like an army of Parkrun volunteers in their fluorescent hi-viz! First timer’s briefing is always helpful – to explain the ropes to those completely new to Parkrun and to describe the course to the Parkrun Tourists amongst us. Then comes the RD’s briefing – with shout-outs to those runners achieving milestones of 50 and 100 parkruns, a couple of Happy Birthdays today for Hannah and Matt, and the all-important cheer of thanks to all those who have given up their Saturday morning to volunteer as marshals, tailwalkers, timekeepers, finish token support, barcode scanners to name but a few of the roles involved in making your Parkrun happen each and every week.

Then 3,2,1 and we’re off…. the course is very different from the trail runs I’m used to – today was 3 laps of the Velopark’s tarmac surface and a quick 0.5km out and back along a gravel path, dodging the puddles, to finish. The combination of tarmac and a flat, flat, flat course make for an excellent PB opportunity! This week was Pacer week and I am ever grateful to the 27 min pacer who paced me round to finish with a personal all-time Parkrun PB, fuelled on by the shouts of encouragement from the marshals as we passed by. That’s what I love about Parkrun – it doesn’t matter if you are the fastest or the slowest runner, jogger or walker, it’s an event for everyone, a personal challenge to improve on your own PB, a chance to socialise and meet fellow parkrunners, and the Torbay Velopark crowd seem a very friendly bunch!

If you’re a regular at Torbay Velopark and fancy a change of scene one Saturday morning, why not come visit us at Haldon Forest for a different Parkrun experience along the forest tracks with amazing views over the Exe Estuary… once you’ve tackled our uphill sections! We’d be delighted to welcome you and it’s our first birthday coming up on 22nd February.

Torbay Velopark parkrun #159 1st January 2020 by Mark Pinney

A busy morning!

Having spent the first part of New Year’s Day morning travelling from Watford to Killerton parkrun, and with most people I spoke to there saying they would be going to Haldon Forest parkrun for the second part of their double, I was panicking a little in thinking I wouldn't make it to Torbay Velopark in time for the 10:30 start and that I'd chosen the "wrong double". Thankfully I made it with 20 minutes to spare and found the car park to be largely empty, although that didn't last long. Out of nowhere, cars were soon flocking in with parkrunners a-plenty. Some first time parkrunners, some doing their first parkrun of the day, but a lot of people there to complete their second parkrun of the morning (New Year’s Day being the only day of the year in which you can register two parkrun results).

Before arriving I hadn't realised just how flat the course is. On another day, I would surely have gone for a PB, but today was not that day. The hard slog around Killerton had taken its toll and although I started well, it soon became apparent that I would need to take some short walking breaks. Thankfully all of the volunteers were on hand to keep shouting encouragement and cheer us all on, and with 3 laps this meant we saw a large contingent of them by the start line fairly frequently.

In addition to the usual line of up of running gear, we also had a guy dressed up in a shark outfit who was surprisingly quick. I certainly couldn't keep up with him!

I'd like to say a big thank you to all of the volunteers for running such a great event and ensuring it went smoothly and safely:

Harry ASPINALL, Melanie BROWN, Rachel COLLINS, Hannah DAVIES, Vicky ENDEAN, Evalyn FLANAGAN, Alison FORD, Simon GILBOY, Caroline GILES-MEDHURST, Roger MATTHEWS, Valerie MCCLEAN, Naoko MCKINNON, Sarah MILLS, Sharon NELSON, Mark PINNEY, Clive PRICE, Alicia PRICE, Stephen WILBRAHAM, Philip WILLCOX, Tom WRIGHT

Some of you may have noticed me with a GoPro on my head as I like to video all of my parkruns and put them on YouTube for other parkrunners, so this will be appearing on YouTube in the next couple of weeks.

On to the stats....

This week we had 301 runners, joggers and walkers. There were 26 UNKNOWNSs (don't forget your barcode next week), 124 Females and 151 Males.

First 3 Males to finish were Dave BROWN in a new PB of 17:22, Rob WILLIAMS in a new PB of 17:46 and Julian SMITH in a new PB of 17:48. First 3 Female finishers were Laura WAKEHAM in a new PB of 19:09, Naomi FLANAGAN in 19:31 and Abby SAMPSON in a new PB of 20:08. Wow! Lots of new PB's there!

There were 57 parkrunners who were new to Torbay Velopark parkrun of whom 22 were doing their first ever parkrun, and an amazing 49 PB's. So well done to everyone and we hope to see you back next week.

The "most runniest runner" was Nicola NOBLE on 297 parkruns, but there were 37 members of the 100 Club, 58 members of the 50 Club and 15 members of the 10 Club present. Official milestones achieved today were Philip ELEY who joined the 100 Club, Rob HARRIS who joined the 50 Club and Oscar EVE who joined the 10 Club.

Highest Age Grading on the day was Julie BASS with 86.54%, with an astonishing time of 22:25 in the VM60-64 category!!

Well done to everyone who completed the course today, great stuff!!!!

Other news....

Have you heard about "Free Weekly Timed", the parkrun podcast with Vassos Alexander and Helen Williams? I thoroughly recommend listening to the back catalogue between parkrun days.
