Upton Court parkrun #373
29 February 2020
Today marked a piece of parkrun history as this was the first time that parkrun had coincided with a leap day. It was also the first time that it was possible to complete 5 parkruns in February. The next time you will be able to parkrun on 29th February will be in 2048.
However, another weekend brought with it another storm. This time it was the turn of Jorge. Upton Court proved yet again to be a safe haven for a number of displaced runners following the closure of numerous parkruns including Banbury, Bracknell, Guildford, Reading and Oxford. The conditions were some of the wettest and muddiest we have witnessed at Upton Court to the point that some geese had taken up residence on the course. It's worth noting that to the best of my knowledge Upon Court parkrun has never been cancelled due to the weather. The number of runners was well down on our average but the early heavy rain that Matt Smith had endured during course set up had actually eased by start time.
We welcomed two runners to the parkrun family: Bradley Wood and Gerry Mcnamara.
Stephanie Poulson and Stephanie Robert both achieved the 50 parkrun milestone.
Alexy Dury, whilst collecting the letter "U" as part of the alphabet challenge, also ran her 50th different parkrun (Half Cowell).
Only one person achieved a PB in the difficult conditions and so a special mention goes to Danielle Goodall for knocking over a minute off her previous record. The first man home was Lee Parker (19:29) and first lady was Kathryn Purcell (23:08), both were visitors and first time runners at Upton Court. Top age grading was achieved by Jon Kew (72% ) and Birgit Cunningham (69%). Aesthetically pleasing time of the week (APTOTW) was awarded to Robert Nutter for 29:00 dead as it matched today's date, as well as the overall average time for Upton Court parkrun after 373 runs..
