5000th runner

Yet again, for the 4th month in a row, St John’s won the school’s competition, but it is very close. Tell your friends at school, are you going to challenge St John’s for the last two months of the competition and try to knock them off the top spot?

Our first three male finishers were:
Tristan Wright in 07:35, first timer to Thornes Bertie Travis in 08:33 and Rowan Tivers in 08:43.

Our first ladies back were:
Evie Tunney with a new PB in 08:13, Isla Ball, also bagging a new PB in 08:28 and Millie Powell, just outside her own PB in 08:34.

Massive shout out to Henry, who was an absolute superstar and made us all smile. He came across the finish line, with his own PB of 18:53 with a massive grin on his face and it was lovely to see how much he enjoyed himself, a fantastic reminder of why we do it.

We did have a little girl trip at the start this week. This is the reason we ask you all to take a step back and give each other room. We don’t want any injuries. Luckily she was OK and carried on to finish the run but she could have been badly hurt. Please be mindful of other runners around you and don’t go off too fast.

Next week we have the race for life team coming for a takeover event. They will be bringing a stall, and, I’m told, some goodies to give away. We are also on the ALTERNATIVE COURSE NEXT WEEK. Start up at the top of the hill by the playground. Please allow extra time to arrive and walk up, as we won’t be delaying the start.
Remember that we are still in the running for the ASDA tokens to raise funds to keep us going and be able to replace kit including first aid equipment. If you shop at ASDA in Durkar please grab the tokens and stick them in the slot for junior parkrun.

As always, a HUGE thank you to our volunteers. The event really can’t happen without them and some weeks we really do struggle. If you can help by marshalling on taking on a finish line role so you can be there when your little one finishes then please get in touch.
This week’s volunteers were: Steven BAKER, Nikki BAKER, Carrie BURCH, Sam ELLIS, Karen FORBES, Anna FURZER, Annabelle JAMES, Andrew H JONES, Sara L JONES, Deb NICHOLLS, Andrew NICHOLLS, Katie PALEY, Millie POWELL, Donna RICHARDSON, Helen RIGG, Natalie TUNNEY, Karen WILSON, Clare WRIGHT, Tony WRIGHT, Tristan WRIGHT

See you all next week, when Clare is your Run Director.

Run report – Event #51 – 28th April 2019 – the birthday bash!

Well done everyone on a fantastic first birthday event at Wakefield Thornes junior parkrun!

A huge well done to our heroes that were awarded special birthday awards for attendance at Wakefield over the last year:

We also had a huge shout out to our regular volunteers. We have a fantastic core team of RDs at Wakefield Thornes. As well as Event Directors Tony and Clare, we have Run Directors Nikki, Caroline, Karen, Andy, Leyla, Sara and Annabelle who have been invaluable all year. Jackie, our volunteer coordinator has (officially) done 39 weeks at Wakefield, more than anyone else, but we know there are weeks that she hasn’t put herself in, so has done even more! We have a large number of volunteers that don’t have children attending junior parkrun but still give up their time almost every Sunday to come and make the magic happen…Andy and Deb, who also run the 5k event in Wakefield every Saturday, Annabelle, Helen, Jackie, Sara and Andy, who’s little one can’t take part for another three years yet. We appreciate every single one!

Annabelle and Jackie also celebrated milestones today – Annabelle volunteered for her 200th time and Jackie her 50th! Amazing work guys!

Thank you to everyone that supported the event today, including the Wakefield fire brigade who came down to see you all. Hopefully we will see them again soon. Birthday celebrations

Can you believe that this weekend we turn 1?! What a year it has been. We have had 921 different runners over 50 events, completing between them 4,826 runs, covering 9,652km and a whopping 1,153 PBs and 28 different first finishers. These have been supported by 137 different volunteers, covering 1011 activities.

How many of you will we see this weekend for our first birthday? Will we see our 5,000th runner this Sunday?

birthday banner

In true birthday party style we will have cake, sweets, juice at the finish for you all and we intend to take lots of photos, so please let us know when you arrive at the park if you don't want to be in them.

We invite you all (adults and children alike) to dress up as heroes or villians for our run, but that is completely optional.

We would like to see as many juniors as possible that have run with us over the last year. This is also a 'double points' run for the school's competition.

5th May (Revenge of the fifth) - Star wars weekend. The 5k parkrun are doing may the fourth be with you, we are doing revenge of the fifth to make a weekend of it. Will you go the way of the Jedi, or succumb to the dark side?

12th May - We have a takeover by Cancer research UK's race for life and pretty muddy team, painting the park pink.

If you want to keep up to date and see any new information please do like and share our facebook page, we use this the most to keep everyone in the loop and for shout outs etc. You can also follow us on twitter and instagram check us out @wakeyjuniors on twitter or wakefield_thornes_juniors on instagram.

As always, a huge thank you to our high viz heroes this week who were:

Andrew H JONES • Andrew NICHOLLS • Annabelle JAMES • Ben CUTTS • Carol MOUNTAIN • Deb NICHOLLS • Gill DYSON • Helen RIGG • Jacqueline ALDERSON • Karen FORBES • Kathryn STORY • Lucy-Jo MOUNTAIN • Matti DYSON-JOHNSON • Rachel WALSH • Sara L JONES • Sharon LANCASTER • Tony WRIGHT • Tristan WRIGHT

Without them the event could not take place and with becoming busier we need more volunteers, especially around the finish line to help everyone across the finish and get scanned as quickly as possible. We do struggle for volunteers at times and we can't start the run until we know all our marshals are in place, this means also replacing people last minute if they can't make it at short notice, so it is always helpful to have more. If you think you could help do get in touch.  You don't need experience as we can show you the ropes and would never ask you to fulfill a role you were uncomfortable with. See you all next week!!!!
