Run Report – Wakefield Thornes parkrun Event #245 7th September 2019

It was a lovely sunny morning for Wakefield Thornes parkrun this week. Chris and Jane-Marie Bracchi were Run Directors for the first time at Wakefield Thornes, supported by a huge team of awesome volunteers. A special mention to Amelia Lee, who was volunteering for the 25th time!

We had a few other milestones; Rick Pullan completed his 250th parkrun, Trish Nicholls' 100th, Martin Hickman's 50th and Connor Browett and Ruthvik Kothapalli completed their 10th parkruns.

18 people completed their first ever parkrun this week - we hope to see you all again soon!

We had visitors from Keighley, Pendle, Dewsbury, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Storthes Hall and Barnsley.

A Happy Birthday to Melody Walters who joined us for parkrun (sorry if we missed this out of the pre-run brief)!

Don’t forget it is the Bring a Friend to parkrun event next week, 14th September. We have sign support from Bex and 10 various walk/run pacing groups – so definitely something for everyone, or even a nice spot to stand and spectate if a friend just wants to come along and see what parkrun is all about.

The 21st September is the 5th birthday of Wakefield Thornes parkrun and we will be celebrating with the usual tradition of running the course in reverse and optional ‘5’ themed fancy dress. Cakes can be left at the stadium before parkrun to enjoy later in the Harriers’ cabins on the track.

We are very grateful to our volunteers. If you would like to get involved by volunteering at Wakefield Thornes parkrun in the future, you can contact us by email wakefieldthornes@parkrun.com or via our Facebook page, or even just rock up to the stadium at 08:30.

This week 327 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 46 were first timers and 73 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 33 different clubs took part.

run Report – Event number #240 – 3rd August 2019

Another awesome Wakefield Thornes parkrun took place on a hot and humid Saturday morning in August. An early start for Run Director debutant John Osborne, ably assisted by co Run Director Sally Jane Fozzard, plus the team of fantastic hi-viz hero volunteers who operated as smoothly as expected.

A funfair was taking place near the children’s play area which meant an unexpected minor route change, but this was communicated to the runners at the start and the marshals in the area affected. Anyone interested, please consider volunteering at Wakefield Thornes parkrun in the future. 8.30am at the stadium or contact details on the website or Facebook page.

Runners from many different running groups attended this event, including a group from Eccleshill Road Runners and a group from Wellgate Running Club in Ossett who included this parkrun as part of long run marathon training. Good luck with that.

Tourists attending today came from Sheffield, York, Huddersfield, Leeds, Bradford, Barnsley and just down the road, Australia! The Australian attendee was Fred Smart who was running his 100th parkrun. Well done Fred. Safe journey home and hope you enjoyed your visit today.

Happy 40th birthday to Clare Holl who celebrated with a new pb. We may have missed this out in the pre run briefing so apologies for that.

run Report – Event 233 – 8th June

Summer is with us, bringing warmth, sunshine, blue skies and running gear - and one of those items was present today at the 233rd Wakefield Thornes parkrun well covered by waterproofs and umbrellas as we were treated to some of those gentle showers (aka downpours) that we Brits know and love.

However, warmth was there too, albeit not related to the temperature. Where else can you arrive to be greeted with such a warm welcome? Discussions ranging from how to cater for all the dietary needs at a 50th birthday party (happy birthday - you know who you are!), how to keep pizza dry in the rain and appropriate waterproofs to co-ordinate with strappy sandals, to whether skin is completely waterproof. And not a glum face to be seen!

Marshalls, thank you so much for standing under umbrellas and trees and cheering us on. That is truly ‘Going the extra mile’!

So, after the fastest ever intro from our run director (2 minutes as promised), we were off! 228 people walking, running, jogging and wading around the scenic route that wends its way through Thornes Park and beyond. ‘Lovely weather for ducks’ you might say - but the ducks appeared to think otherwise, even the ducklings appearing bedraggled as if to say:
‘What’s this about water off a duck’s back?’.

But the weather was not so much a discouragement to our valiant members as an encouragement to go faster and 51 people gained a personal best (PB) including Chloe doing her second ever parkrun and her first in Wakefield. Well done all of you.

Results were as follows:

Male placings:

First past the post in a time of 17mins 27 was Adam Peers of Wakefield District Harriers and AC, followed by Stewart Knowles from the same club in 17mins 48. An unknown runner was next in, followed by Owen Chapman in 4th place with a time of 18mins 12.

Female placings:

Rosie Boughton from Wakefield District Harriers and AC came in first woman in a time of 22mins 06 followed by Gabriella Price from the same club with a time of 22mins 39 and Jessica Watson in third place with a time of 22min 43.

Milestones:

Today there were 26 first timers - nice to meet you all.
Matthew Laffey completed his 50th parkrun today. Well done!

A big thank you to all our volunteers who made today’s run possible, they included:

Kov BAHADORI, Nikki BAKER, Viv CROSSLEY, Matilda FURZER, Max FURZER, Shaun FURZER, Phil GIBSON, Jennifer GILL, Paul GILLINGS, Charlotte HALL, Philip HALL, Lily HARDY, Robert HARDY, Wendy INGHAM, Sara L JONES, Stewart KNOWLES, Caroline MCGRATH, Andrew NICHOLLS, Deb NICHOLLS, Clare PECKETT, Thomas SELLERS, Lisa VERCELLI and Emma WICKS

A huge vote of thanks too, to all you special people who turned up, undeterred by the forecast, and made it such a special run with your smiles, banter and company. After you have checked out for webbed feet (did I mention the rain???) why not join us again at Wakefield Thornes parkrun? You could even drag a friend along - you know it will do them good! That’s what friends are for! All are welcome: complete beginners, walkers and runners alike,
however inexperienced, new to running or slow you think you are. We promise that you will never be the last person back in and that we will cheer you on!

Next week the Thornes parkrun will not be happening as Race for Life will be setting up around the course. To find other nearby runs, please visit the home page of our website. See you all the following week!

A Message from Kay Patchett Area Event Manager - Cancer Research UK

"We’re seeing some sign ups come through from the Wakefield park runners which is great news!

I wondered if you knew anyone that might be interested in volunteering as the lead runner/lead bike for our 10k event? When I attended the adult park run at Wakefield there were loads of nippy runners who could set the pace and show others the route to take

run Report – Event number #231 – 25th May 2019

Once again we had glorious weather for another awesome parkrunday event #231 at Thornes Park in Wakefield. We had an amazing atmosphere, due in no small part to Sarah Powala who arrived not only with her Green Army, but also brought along Richard Stead, yes thee Richard Stead of BBC Radio Leeds – The Richard Stead Breakfast Show (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p024nj7g). Richard opened our pre-brief, which you can hear on his Breakfast Show on Monday morning 27th May 2019, commencing at 07:00, or failing that you can hear him on catch-up. He provided details about Sarah and her Green Army who are once again running 10k a Day in May to fundraise for Wakefield Hospice, and he actually joined them on the parkrun and after. His introduction was very entertaining and well worth a listen. Our wonderful participants, volunteers and spectators provided fantastic support to encourage all 329 participants to run jog or walk across the finish line, or waddle and sweat in the case of Richard Stead. We had an incredible 39 first timers, 20 of whom were taking part in their very first parkrun, well done one and all, and please come back soon. A fantastic 68 participants recorded a shiny new Personal Best (PB) and representatives from 24 different clubs took part, as well as tourists from Kingstown Jamaica, Nottingham and Steve Penny from Strathclyde parkrun, Glasgow.

We had a fantastic response for volunteers this week, so massive thanks to all who volunteered, you did an awesome job and we had lots of comments from our participants to say how appreciated you all are.

Massive milestone congratulation shout out this week went to Caroline Shelton on her 100th volunteer for parkrun, thank you so much Caroline for your awesome volunteering. We also gave birthday shouts to Grace and Martha who both turned 8 at the weekend. Many Happy Returns to you both.

• 15th June – parkrun cancelled due to Race For Life event.

• Walk at parkrun – date to be arranged later in the summer – we’re certain that many of our lovely running community will be aware of people who don’t come to parkrun because they fear that they have to run and to run well to participate. We want all our running community to start encouraging people to come along to spectate, volunteer, or even walk in the hope that they’ll see what a wonderful supportive community we have and hopefully they’ll then take part and walk in our yet to be named and dated event. Let’s start those conversations folks.

See you all again at our next parkrun event on Saturday, 1st June 2019, for yet another amazing event #232.
