Many thanks to Shaun FURZER for allowing us to use his lovely Facebook post as the basis of this week’s run report. Says it all really about our lovely parkrun community at Wakefield Thornes.
Happy 5th Birthday to my local and favourite @parkrunuk route – the mighty Wakefield Thornes. I’ve lived in Wakefield for nearly as long as this event has been running, but when I started running them two years ago I was welcomed by the most wonderful community of runners and volunteers. They give their time up every weekend (not to mention all the weekday hours on logistics) and are there with a smile come rain or shine.
The Furzer family have lived in a few places now, but no place has felt like home until we moved here. Going to a regular event like this, knowing people there and knowing that they are happy to see you and share this time together is one of the reasons I love parkrun so much. There’s lots of not fun stuff happening around us all the time so to see so many people coming together is a wonderful thing.
It’s also the variety of runs, though having covered ten locations so far I always love coming back here.
As a “treat” the team reversed the route and turned a very fast start downhill into a savage uphill finish. I held onto 4th place in 18:47, though it was some way away from a course PB. I’m blaming the hill !!
Happy 5th Birthday Wakefield Thornes. Here’s to many, many more.
Now for this week’s number….
This week 402 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 51 were first timers and 33 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 33 different clubs took part.
We gave a massive milestone shout out to Francis MWABA on his 100th parkrun, well done Francis, and we also wished one of our volunteer stalwarts, and runner, Phil Gibson, a very happy birthday for Sunday.
Our first finisher was Ian HARRISON (18:00), followed by Owen CHAPMAN (18:26) and Tom CULLEN (18:43).
First female finisher was Bridget COOMBER (20:21), followed by Rebecca ZSERDICKY (21:15), and Angela DALES (22:49).
It was also wonderful to see a large number of last week’s first timers, who presented with a barcode, return for a 2nd week and achieve a fantastic new PB. Well done one and all.
