On Saturday 30th March we at Wallace parkrun will host our first ‘5k Your Way: Move Against Cancer.’
We will be the first parkrun in all of Northern Ireland to host the initiative.
What is ‘5k Your Way: Move Against Cancer’?
It is a community-based initiative to encourage those living with and beyond cancer, families, friends and those working in cancer services to walk, jog, run, cheer or volunteer at a local 5k Your Way parkrun event on the last Saturday of every month.
Exercise has enormous benefits for people living with cancer. It reduces cancer fatigue, helps to preserve cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, may reduce treatment side effects, improves psychological well-being, may reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and prolong survival. Most importantly however is that it is fun and social!
The ‘5k Your Way’ website can be found here: https://5kyourway.org/.
The BBC also recently did a feature on the charity. Have a watch here:
Gwyneth Hinds and Janet Rogers have very kindly offered to be our ambassadors. Gwyneth worked as a breast surgeon for 13 years in Belfast City Hospital, while Janet is a GP in Carryduff and currently undergoing treatment for bowel cancer. Indeed within a few weeks of surgery Janet has been back with us at Wallace parkrun doing 5k her way!
Gwyneth says, “We are delighted to be ambassadors and look forward to welcoming those living with and beyond cancer, families, friends, and those working in cancer services to walk, jog, run, cheer or volunteer at Wallace parkrun. Any distance you choose to complete is entirely up to you, sometimes getting out to the park is achievement enough.”
We thank Gwyneth and Janet for bringing this initiative to our attention and we look forward to welcoming as many people into the parkrun family over the coming months.
