Last run report of 2013 – Bring on 2014! 28 December 2013.

Can you believe it was the last parkrun of the year? Whilst it was quite nippy this morning, there were still 151 runners who took part this morning. Our next run at the arboretum will be on Saturday, 4th January 2014. Anyone who runs or volunteers at any parkrun next weekend will get a link in their result e-mail enabling them to enter a competition for a place at next year's London Marathon (courtesy of Adidas).

For those of you who can't wait until next week for a parkrun - I put a list here of parkruns in the West Midlands area who will be open for business on New Year's Day. If there are two venues in close proximity that are putting events on, parkrun HQ will allow you to run in two events on the same day. Conkers parkrun have an event scheduled for 9.00am on New Year's Day and I am reliably informed that it would be possible to make it from there to Kingsbury Water parkrun in time for their run at 10.30am.

Given that other parkruns have had to cancel events over the last week or so due to bad weather, if you are planning on travelling to another event, please keep an eye on their news page, facebook site or twitter stream so you have maximum notice of any change to their plans, although just like Walsall parkrun, it may not be possible to make a decision until the volunteers see the course on 1st January.

We've got their number! - Paul and birthday boy Darren Redmond (right) can confirm that the new hair treatment they've been trying works wonders!

Protective headgear is not a requirement for volunteer marshalls, but each to their own!

We are currently VERY short on volunteers for next Saturday's parkrun with scanners, timekeeper and marshalls still required. Please contact the office if you can help.

Of today's runners, Robin Hanby is now on 49 runs and of our junior runners, Rebecca Yarnell is only two away from being the proud owner of a new white running top!

A rest day…?

So we had parkrun on Christmas Day (Wednesday). I hear tell of Boxing Day (Thursday) handicap races taking place in both Tipton Harriers and West Bromwich Harriers, so with another parkrun due on Saturday, Friday 27 December must have been a rest day right? Not a bit of it! 29 Walsall parkrun regulars headed up to Wheaton Aston in Staffordshire to take part in their traditional day-after-Boxing-Day 10k race. Here are their times (I have used chip-time, but placing has been done on gun-time hence why Mark finished in a higher position than Christopher).

Well done to everyone who took part and see you all back down the arboretum tomorrow!

I understand pictures from the event will be uploaded here, here, and Ron was there snapping away as well!

All I Want For Christmas is a new PB – Christmas Day at Walsall parkrun 2013

DSC08920
Last year we had 37 runners on Christmas Day and on Christmas Eve, Kate went on Radio WM and said she thought we might get 100 this year. Well, you wouldn't want to disappoint a lady on Christmas Day now would you - and you didn't. There were 126 festive finishers, including some parkrun tourists and eight complete newbies - what a day to do your first parkrun! Whether you are from another part of the country and visiting relatives or local and your home parkrun didn't have a Christmas Day event, we hope you enjoyed your time with us and you'll come and run with us again.

DSC08879

Particular thanks to  all the volunteers who gave up their time on a quite nippy morning, especially reminding us it was a bit icy around the centre green.

VolCD

Thanks also to anyone who answered Pete's call for volunteers this Saturday - it'll make Ayaaz's job a lot easier! However, January is still looking a bit sparse volunteer-wise. Please contact the office if you can help.

Photos
I don't want to put Ron out of the fantastic job he does, if you do happen to take any snaps whilst at Walsall Arboretum parkrun, why not upload them to our flickr site and share them with everyone! After all, you'll never get to see a photo with Ron in it if he has to take them all! Ron was taking photos on Christmas Day, so keep an eye out on our facebook page and the photos tab above for when he uploads them!

50-run club
If you had the opportunity to run your 50th parkrun on Christmas Day - would you? Well after 2 runs in Coventry, 16 at Cannon Hill Park and 32 at the arboretum, Val Carter's extra Christmas present is going to be a 50-run t-shirt!

Breaking News!

So it's Christmas Eve and all of a sudden Paul Ross (who kindly looks after the @walsallparkrun twitter feed) receives a message from BBC WM asking if we'd like to go on the radio to talk about our Christmas Day parkrun.

Kate was the person hastily shoved forward into the limelight and she did a very good interview with Shane O'Connor around 5:30pm. If you'd like to listen to it, this is a link to BBC Radio iPlayer. I assume it will only be available for seven days.

Thank You, Kate, for giving up your time to do it. (By the way everyone else - she said she's expecting 100 of us there, so you can't let her down now!)

It’s Christmas! – Walsall parkrun, Event number 91 – 21st December 2013

'Twas the Saturday before Christmas, and all round the park.
People were gathering, coming out of the dark.
The trainers were tied by the runners with care,
In hopes that PBs soon would be there.

We knew in a moment it must be our Kate.

Christmas, New Year and Weather

Christmas Day

We have sufficient volunteers to enable the run on Christmas Day to take place. It will be a 9.00am start as usual. However, if today was your last run with us for a while, I'd like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Stay safe and we hope to see you again soon.

New Year's Day

Whilst there won't be a parkrun at Walsall Arboretum on New Year's Day, several other local parkrun events will be running. Here's a list of confirmed events:

Parkrun

Time

Cannon Hill, Birmingham

10.30am

Hanley, Stoke

10.00am

Kingsbury Water, Sutton Coldfield

10.30am

Leamington

10.00am

Telford

10.00am

Worcester

10.00am

Any events not present are either not running or not confirmed. If you are away and want to know if a parkrun is taking place near where you will be, here's a link that might help. HQ have confirmed that you will only be able to record one time on Christmas Day, but two on New Year's Day, so if you are able to get from a 9.00am run to a 10.30am run and want to run twice, you can do so.

Weather

It seems to have been quite mild so far in December, however in the last couple of years we have had snow and ice in the new year. We do try to ensure parkrun can take place as much as possible, however there may be times where the conditions are too bad for us to allow the run to go ahead. If we have a prolonged cold snap, we may know in advance that we won't be running, but there may be times when we won't be able to make a decision until we make it down to the arboretum and see the conditions. We will try and update this page as well as our facebook and twitter accounts as soon as possible.

Midweek Mentions

Last Weekend

Last Sunday saw the 30th Telford 10k race, held around Telford Town Park. As you might expect, quite a few runners from Walsall Arboretum parkrun headed over to take part. The elite runners (anyone aiming to run sub-40 minutes) set off at 10:45am with the masses race (anyone else) starting at 11:30am.

I'm tried to pick out regular parkrunners by running club name (or if I knew they were there). However, if I've missed you off the list of times below, let me know and I'll include you. There are currently over 200 photos of the race here with more being added all the time if you fancy a look. The full race result is here, and the finishing position is determined by time, not by which race you took part in.

Next Weekend

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas... everywhere you go, so why shouldn't Walsall Arboretum be any different this weekend. If you fancy flying round in something festive (or even crawling round in something Christmassy depending on whether you've had a works do the night before) you're more than welcome. Obviously this is purely optional and it'll be great to see you anyway, but don't forget your barcode!

Walsall parkrun, Event number 90 – 14th December 2013

We had a reduced field at the arboretum this weekend, with 122 finishers.

Thanks to Aldridge RC for giving up your opportunity to run this weekend and taking over most of the volunteering roles. There have been many compliments on our facebook page about the tea, coffee and cakes that were provided in the pavilion afterwards. I think it's safe to say you can come again!

We are short of volunteers in the upcoming weeks - please consider whether you could take a week off running to fulfil one of the available roles.

DSC08050
Did Mary Christmas forget her barcode - she's not listed as either a runner or a volunteer - #DFYB (Don't forget your barcode).

T-shirt Time!
It's been a while since we've been able to award some T-shirts at the run briefing - apologies for they delay. Whilst we can only get them out as fast as HQ can get them to us, there are more tops to give out in upcoming weeks, so if you're due one, why make sure you're there to collect your reward!

DSC08083
Bev earned her 50 T-shirt some time ago - she's up to 61 parkruns now!

DSC08082
Craig picked up his T-shirt from Kate and hopefully he's now shaken off his injury.

Instead, they were there to support Dennis Hussey, who was running his final three miles in his challenge to run 2013 miles in 2013. Details of Dennis' challenge can be found here if you're interested: http://www.birminghamhospice.org.uk/News/a-year-long-challenge-for-2013

Walsall parkrun, Event number 89 – 7th December 2013

There were a quite a few other running events taking place this weekend, which saw our numbers reduced slightly, but it was still decent weather for a winter wonderland wander around Walsall Arboretum. I think the surprise of the morning for me was still being a reasonable distance from the final corner and thinking "Blimey, Paul Ross is shouting loudly today" (He claims to have been using a megaphone, but did anyone actually see it?)

Whilst there is a run scheduled for Christmas Day, we would like the Saturday beforehand (21 December) to be our Christmas run, so why not dress for the occasion!

Vol

We appreciate people get busier on the run up to Christmas, however if you could spare some time over the festive period to do one of the volunteering roles, it would be appreciated.

After the guys and gals from West Bromwich Harriers did such a good job a few weeks back, Saturday 14 December will be hosted by Aldridge Running Club. Thanks to you all.

The rota up to mid-January is now online. You'll never know how well you did if there's no-one to time and scan etc and most of the volunteers are giving up their chance to run the course so you can. Why not e-mail us or speak to one of the run directors one Saturday and put your name down.

An extra parkrun in December:
Those of you who have been checking out the volunteer rota may have noticed that an extra date has appeared. Yes, we've spoken to Father Christmas and he's decided that as we've been good boys and girls this year, we can have an extra run on Christmas Day. So whether you've been up since 5am with the children opening the presents and need something to do by 7.30am or if you just want to burn off the calories before the Christmas Dinner is served, feel free to join us at 9am for three laps of the Arboretum. Thanks to Pete for being our festive run director.
