Christmas 2016 and New Year 2017.

The Walsall Arboretum parkrun event team are pleased to confirm that in line with previous years, we will be putting on an extra parkrun on Christmas Day at 9:00am. Runners attending should anticipate that the visitor centre, toilets and car park will all be closed. We will not be putting on an additional parkrun on New Year's Day.

If you are away for Christmas or if you are keen to take part in the traditional New Year's Day parkrun double (the only day of the year you can do this in the UK), a full list of events running on Christmas and New Year's Day can be found at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/christmas-compendium/

We will continue to run each Saturday in December as usual, including Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Something new… Next week’s parkrun (30 January 2016).

Have you been after a time for a while and aren't sure how you're going to manage to run it? This might be the answer...

parkrun sponsor FitBit have sent us some new... hi-viz... PACER BIBS!

We're looking for runners who would be prepared to run to a specific pace so help their fellow parkrunners achieve faster times. Initially, I'd like runners who would pace to 20 minutes, 25 minutes, 30 minutes, 35 minutes and 40 minutes. Other times may be considered if all of the above times are filled.

If you as a parkrun community like this, we can try it again, perhaps with different times.

If you would like to act as a pacer, please can you e-mail the office to let us know what time you are aiming to run so we can add you into the volunteer rota. Please ensure the time you choose you are capable of running comfortably. (If you only ran sub-25 minutes for the first time this weekend, we would prefer it if you didn't pace this timing group on this occasion).

FAQs:

Pacers will receive a volunteer credit AND a run credit (and will therefore count towards both your volunteer t-shirt and your next run club t-shirt).

In respect of the points competition:

  • If you have already volunteered three times, you will receive the points applicable for your finishing position in the run.
  • If you have not already volunteered three times, you will receive 100 points for volunteering instead of your run points.

Under 11s are welcome to join a pacing group. The pacer WILL NOT replace the child's responsible adult (as if the child cannot keep up, the pacer will not wait for them and therefore the child would be unaccompanied). However, there may be an adult within the same pacer group who might be prepared to act as the responsible adult in the event of any difficulties.

Happy Running!

West Midlands Christmas Compendium

There's less than three weeks until Christmas Day, and the parkrun Christmas Compendium is nearly complete. I have extracted the planned runs for all West Midlands parkruns (plus Conkers since they're close enough to Kingsbury Water to be able to do a New Years Day Double).

Just to remind you...

  • On Christmas Day, you will only be credited for one parkrun (even if you are capable of attending more than one!)
  • On New Years Day, you will be credited for a maximum of two parkruns (even if you are able to attend more than two).

Please ensure you keep an eye on the parkrun news page / facebook page / twitter page of the event  you are planning on visiting (or the Christmas Compendium itself) to ensure you are aware of any last minute changes to their plans.

parkrun is a 5km run, however there aren't a lot of these listed - if you feel you would like to try a longer distance, why not get in touch with your local running club to see if they can help you work towards this. Our links page has details of quite a few local running clubs. If your club is not mentioned, please e-mail the office with the details of your club name and website and we'll update the page accordingly.

Upcoming races – April & May 2014

We received an e-mail this week asking us to plug the Worcester 10km race on 1 June 2014 - Details here. Going forward, I'm going to put up a post detailing local races (L) I'm aware of and races I know Walsall Arboretum parkrunners are taking part in (P) for the following two months (Look out for May/June races towards the end of April). This will hopefully help me keep track of where people are running. I've had a trawl of the events listed for the Midlands region on the Runners World website. This is by no means a comprehensive list so if I've missed an event off that you're competing in, please let me know so I can include it (only races that are open to the general public please, no inter-club competitions). It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Heeran is organising a Christmas dinner for anyone who would like to attend. The venue is going to be Buffet Island in Great Barr on Saturday 7 December and the cost is £13.90 per person.

You can either message Heeran via facebook or grab him at parkrun. If you are not familiar with the location of Buffet Island, a link to Google Maps is here.
