Wetherby parkrun Event number 204 on 7th September 2019

STOP PRESS: Please note there is no Wetherby parkrun on 21/09/19 due to the bicycle race.

We appreciated a ‘Back to School’ compliment of our fabulous teenage volunteers for the first run of September, including birthday boy Alex whose first task of his 15th year was spent scanning your barcodes. The finish tokens had been treated to a ‘new term makeover’ by photographer Trish, resulting in not a single illegible token - hurrah! It was great to see familiar faces who had been absent due to holidays and is it just me, or is running during the cooler early autumn months so much easier than in the heat of summer?

We love it when new parkrunners use Wetherby as their first run and PLEASE do come back again. Our tourists came from London, Sheffield, Otley, Hull, Huddersfield, Cannock Chase, Ireland, Hertfordshire and winning the prize for long-distance - Australia.

Our younger members continue to inspire us with their determination and a special mention goes to keen footballer Jon Davison on his tenth parkrun. Coro Hickman and Becky Lurcock are to be congratulated on their first run and thank you girls for bringing your lovely Mums with you too!

September 7th saw an exciting new record set at Wetherby. Jo Harbon ran at a spectacular 91.65% for her age grading - wow - well done Jo! Several of our regular runners also achieved PBs so please take time to pat yourselves on the back. Whatever your age grading or time, you will always be supported by your volunteer team; we are just pleased that you all show willing and complete the course.

Special thanks to marshal Simon this week who helped pack away the new impressive ‘start’ sign. Luckily his ‘know how’ with tents helped to pack away our banner or I still might be at the ground trying to fathom out how it works!

I am not at Wetherby for a few weeks now so enjoy your autumnal runs and Gillian (owner of our handsome canine mascot, Joseph) is your super Run Director for this Saturday, 14/09.

Wetherby parkrun Event number 203 on 31 st August 2019

Today’s parkrun was my first as Run Director. I would like to thank all the many enthusiastic volunteers who made everything go like clockwork. The Bradbury family, dad Alex with Amelia, Sophia and James were especially exuberant with the cowbells and encouraged everyone.

IMG_6731[1] IMG_6849[1]

There was the usual compliment of dogs, with two notably quick canine finishers. We had 8 first timers completely new to park running. Hopefully they enjoyed the experience and we will see them again next week or in the near future. There were several ‘Tourists’, some quite far flung, with Rosie Williams from Guernsey winning! Blackpool and Wokingham also featured as tourist towns.

IMG_6819[1]

8 people achieved new PBs including the juniors Ciara and Cerys. Keep up the good work! Many of our regular runners from Wetherby were resting today in preparation for the Wetherby 10k on Sunday which is organised by the Wetherby Runners AC, however some like Richie Dawe (who always pulls a face for the photographer) treat today as a warm-up.

IMG_6648[1] IMG_6764_(2)[1]

There was a late arrival at the run who proceeded to cut a swathe through all the runners – to the extent that they thought they were being lapped as they completed the first lap. The thought of someone running 4 minute miles round our course was breathtaking. I am sorry I don’t know your name – but you know who you are! Please come back soon to shake up our regular runners. The ‘unknown’ runner in the third position of the results table was actually Felix who had not yet registered to receive a barcode as this was his first ever parkrun. What a super result!

All in all a good time was had by the volunteers and runners alike. Hope to see you all next week for a re-run!!! Trish

Wetherby parkruns’ 202nd event, brought the heat, sunshine and lots of visitors to town!

68917420_2541597105901416_9135504230113607680_n

The local bank holiday weekend events (York Races, Leeds Fest and Leeds Carnival) brought loads of visitors from York, Manchester and even London, with Horsham being the furthest travellers. A very impressive 134 people completed the course in the heat and sunshine, with 13 new PB’s collected.

We also welcomed 2 x very first time parkrunners today, and we hope they enjoyed the event and trust they have now picked up the parkrun bug! This was the first event I have been asked for poo bags, as one dog had used up the 5 bags brought by its owner!
As I was at the finish funnel, I spotted a tired-looking teenager. After asking if he was finishing or carrying on, he just looked at me blankly and said I have no idea! He then went on to do another lap, I do hope he was not our first ever 4 lap finisher!?

Trish is looking after the Run Director (RD) slot next week so we may need your photos since Trish will be busy looking after everyone, we look forward to seeing you all there. Regards, Steve

Wetherby parkrun Event number 201 on 17th August 2019

There was a family theme running through Saturday's parkrun. Brother and sister Alex and Tilly were barcode scanning (Tilly first came to Wetherby parkrun just to meet Joseph whippet!) One of our marshals, Will brought along his daughter in her fantastic 'cross country' buggy and we were so happy to see 7 year old Tamsin taking part in her first parkrun with her proud dad Martin.

Some people enjoy running or walking with family or friends, whilst others enjoy having an hour or so just for themselves - I've heard many people say it 'sets them up for the weekend'.

Of course, being Wetherby we also had plenty of dogs. Teddy our Tail Walker brought along her dog Dobby who will only do 2 laps of the course and then is quite content to be looked after at the finish line whilst Teddy completes the last lap. I'm sure many parkrunners will know just how he feels!

Wetherby parkrun Event number 200 on 10th August 2019

Wow - Wetherby parkrun knows how to celebrate; thank you to all our volunteers and runners for making the BIG 200th, a parkrun to remember! Our fantastic crowd looked resplendent in a sea of parkrun, sports clubs and football shirts and we enjoyed tucking into all the goodies which had been generously donated. The many unsung heroes who have facilitated 200 Wetherby parkruns events, were suitably applauded and any offers of further volunteering would be most welcome!

We were excited to have some brand new runners with us who were bravely undeterred by the threats of stormy weather. Please return soon (although note that Karen does not bake her delicious chocolate and banana cake EVERY week)! Our enthusiastic tourists came from Doncaster, Stockton-on-Tees, Durham, London, Beverley and closer to home Brighouse, Roundhay and Harrogate.

Several of our volunteers were suffering with injuries and we wish them a speedy recovery - we all know how frustrating it is to be out of action. We had a Carolyn and a Carolynn as marshals so I was watching my spelling on the emails! Our latest Duke of Edinburgh student is Leo who managed the finish tokens very capably and he will be a much needed and welcome member to the team. The three Driver children had a start line surprise for their Dad after helping the ever dedicated Barry with ‘set up’. It was a pleasure to witness the energetic and determined running from juniors Freya, Olivia, Sam, Cerys, Luca and Nathan.

Many of our regulars will be aware that the handsome canine, Joseph is our treasured Wetherby mascot and he kindly agreed (well...a dog treat may have been deployed) to ‘pose’ this week for a special 200th photo with his namesakes; Joseph our regular Wetherby runner and Joseph a parkrun tourist. The runner Josephs were honoured to share the selfie frame with Gillian’s friendly and famous pooch for the trio of Josephs photo! We would love it if more people used the selfie frame so don’t be shy and give it a go!

Wetherby parkrun Event number 199 on 3rd August 2019

Although this weekends forecast was rain, we were exceptionally lucky to have such a wonderful morning. We saw around 30 people attend the newcomers briefing which included tourists from Bedford, Kent, London and more locally York.

This week saw the start of a couch to 5K (C25K) group that used our course to do this. The group took a fabulous picture with our new pop up banner that arrived last week. We hope to see the C25K group regularly at Wetherby parkrun.

C25K at Wetherby

We had two fabulous volunteers who registered with parkrun on Saturday morning so they could then signed up to volunteer this week. What a fantastic job and a massive round of applause for Matthew Jackson and Nick Masters. To top that, Nick was watching his son running the event and were touring from Bedford. Not only this but they had just stopped off after leaving home around 0500 for Edinburgh but trying to see which parkrun they could make it to as well. Lucky for us they chose Wetherby and we hope they have a fabulous time in Edinburgh.

Wetherby parkrun event 198 on July 27th 2019

STOP PRESS... August 10th will be Wetherby parkrun’s 200th event! To celebrate this major milestone, there will be cake and fruit after your run. As these will be entirely voluntarily provided, please donate (if you are able) home bakes or fruit and thank you in advance for supporting our special run.

48 hours prior to Saturday’s parkrun, witnessed the hottest ever recorded temperature in England, so it was a surprise for our volunteers to have to wear raincoats for the early morning deluge on the 27th! Barry, Nykie and Helen were true parkrun hero’s setting out the course in the driving rain. Thankfully it subsided for our run and surely anything was better than running in Thursday’s 30 degree plus heat...

It was a privilege to be hosts for the brand new parkrunners and we hope you return very soon. Our tourists came from Burton on Trent, Leicester and Surrey with tourist Simon Whillis kindly sorting our finish tokens (his local has in excess of 500 per week). Marshals Pauline, Bob and Sam all made a welcome return and congratulations to volunteers Teddy and Helen on their different but hilly half marathons last weekend.

Joseph led the field with his usual quiet but speedy determination and there was a family feel to Saturday’s smaller gathering with the Daveys, Bradburys, Balls, Lookers and Deborah plus family, all contributing to this community run. Next Saturday will continue the family focus as there is a ‘Foreman finish funnel’ with Mum Helen and son Alex (this week’s snappy photographer)both on scanning duties.

Perhaps this is the unique benefit of our wonderful Wetherby run; big enough to provide but small enough to recognise both individuals and families. If you are on your own, with a precious pooch or running alongside family or friends, you are always welcome at Wetherby. We look forward to seeing you (in your trainers) very soon.

We had Sharon Smith celebrating her 200th parkrun which is an amazing achievement. Wouldn't it have been fabulous if we could have shared her celebration with our 200th parkrun as well? We are 3 weeks away from our 200th and I asked you on Saturday to have a think about what we should do to celebrate. If you have any ideas feel free to email us.

On a bright and sunny morning, 119 participants gathered for the 196th parkrun at Wetherby Ings. Today was a volunteer takeover by Wetherby runners aka the mighty Orange. They provided the vast majority of marshals timekeepers and barcode scanners and there was a great turnout of runners in their orange vests which was good to see.

Significant milestones were for Daniel Nilstrum running his 100th parkrun and Darren Whiting running his 50th parkrun today. Well done guys. The run went smoothly with Dan Nilstrum taking the first finisher by a significant margin on his 100th parkrun. Well done again Dan, a fantastic achievement. The highlight of the day for me was the amount of encouragement one lady gave to her running partner Simon. Simon was getting clapped very loudly towards the finish line. It was only then when I realised that Simon was not a person but a French bulldog probably completing his first ever parkrun! Congratulations Simon.

There was cake at the finish and several people adjourned to the WSA for more cake bacon butties and coffee. Thanks again to all the runners for all your support it was a good atmosphere on the course. And thanks again to all the volunteers without them we couldn’t make the parkrun work. Please remember that there is no parkrun next Saturday due to the food festival on the Ings. See you in a fortnight. Thanks Tim Tunnard on my Run Director Debut.

Wetherby parkrun Event number 195 on 29th June 2019

After a couple of cancelled events earlier in the year it was a case of third time lucky for the debut of our RD Chris and what an event to start with!

For the second time this month, we beat our attendance record in welcoming 179 of you.

twas a busy one this week!

… twas a busy one this week!

Almost half this week's runners were visitors; the reason for this? Well, other than the delights of our friendly little parkrun it probably had something to do with the Endure24 ultra running event taking place later in the day at nearby Bramham Park; err, nothing like a quick parkrun for a warm up!

It was lovely to see visitors from far and wide including amongst other places Lincoln, Tyne and Wear and Milton Keynes with many people sporting their home parkrun orange shirts. We hope you'll visit us again soon!

Whilst Saturday morning maybe didn't start out as hot as had been expected as the run progressed so the humidity increased and so it is particularly well done to the 18 of you who recorded PB's including regular Wetherby runners Helen Foreman and Duncan Rae.

Notable milestones this week included visitor Lucy Barker celebrating her 50th parkrun and also welcoming our core RD team member Steve Trapps to the 100 club (well done both!)

How to celebrate your 100th run!

A hearty thank you to our team of volunteers this week, we had a full rota which also included a couple of hi-vis visitors,  fast finisher Jonathan Harding who picked up scanning duties and Tail Walker Andrew Hughes
