Run Report Event #107 This Girl Can!

After a three week break from the forest due to stormy weather it was fantastic to get back down to business again today. What a way to comeback - straight into parkrun's celebration of International Women's Day.

Building up to today's event parkrun alongside This Girl Can launched a nationwide campaign to encourage more women and girls to pull on their trainers and have a go at parkrun.

This Girl Still Can

At Whinlatter on a cold and cloudy morning we were delighted to welcome 36 amazing women who completed our parkrun out of a total of 83. Among the 36 was Jane Mottram who has waited ever so patiently to complete her 50th parkrun at Whinlatter. Jane should have done this 3 weeks ago, but the cancellations due to the weather hindered her progress. We were thrilled to see her finish and the sash was perfect! We can't wait to see you in that much deserved red t-shirt!

JaneJane Mottram

Two out of the 8 PBs recorded today were by women, well done to you all especially Maria Quigley & Sophie Bradrick!

There were still plenty of first timers to the forest, a total of 23 and out of that number 4 people completed their first ever parkrun. Welcome to Jamie Talbot, Emma Lawrence-Jones, Jamie Shill & Billy Jackson.

Emma Lawrence-Jones

More reasons to celebrate were from the group from Darlington. They came over to celebrate Tracey's 50th birthday! Happy Birthday Tracey - we hope you have a fantastic weekend.

Tracey's Birthday

Although we were celebrating International Women's Day, we wanted to give a shout out to the fantastic fellas that empower, encourage and support all the ladies in their lives and at Whinlatter we have plenty of these men!

Andrew Knights

The first finisher today was William Laye and he managed to raise a total of £96 for Cancer Research UK through his run, well done William!

Reminder that we are not on next week as the Malcolm Wilson Rally is in the forest, but we look forward to seeing everyone again Saturday 21st March for our next parkrun event.

Run Report Event #106 Before Storm Ciara

We were absolutely delighted to be able to go ahead and run our 106th event this week. With the threat of Storm Ciara looming over the weekend, we were grateful that parkrun takes place at 9am so that we could have the event and get out of the forest before the worst of the weather hit!

Although a bit breezy, the conditions were fairly nice and our parkrunners for the first time had a bit of help from the wind as it was behind them on the long climb!

Sam Stead was the first finisher this week in an impressive time of 18:37. First lady back this week was Nichola Jackson in an also impressive time of 21:26, both Sam & Nichola bagged themselves a new PB too - well done both!

Nichola Jackson Sam Stead

There were 21 PBs in total this week and sticking with the windy theme Steven Breeze of West Cumberland Orienteering Club was one of them! Congratulations to all 21.

126 people completed the course on Saturday and we welcomed 42 people who were parkrunning at Whinlatter Forest for the first time. Victoria Moody completed her first ever parkrun with us on Saturday, an amazing achievement!

Other amazing achievements this week were Hayley Finn who completed run #50 and so joins the red t shirt gang and huge shout out to volunteer Andrew Knights who volunteered for the 25th time and so now holds the prestigious purple volunteer t shirt!

Andrew was part of a brilliant volunteer team, our thanks this week goes to: John SCRIVENS • Jo GRUCHY • Rachel JONES • Sonia DRYDEN • Brendan CARLIN • Tony DUNCAN • Andrew KNIGHTS • Suzanna CRUICKSHANK • Louisa GRAHAM • Janet KNIGHTS • Anna FERGUSON

Run Report Event #105

Another week, another milestone for Whinlatter as we saw our 5000th different parkrunner cross the finish. With all the runners this week we are now on a total of 5024 individual parkrunners at Whinlatter since we started just over two years ago. That's a lot of people who have climbed the hills and been rewarded with the fantastic views we have on offer.

Above the trees Jasper View Views

This week we welcomed Cat and her hens, who were running our parkrun as part of Cat's hen party. Decked out in purple tutus and sashes it was lovely seeing the group make their way around the course. Good luck for the wedding in 6 weeks time and we hope you all had a brilliant weekend.

Cat's hens finish

Although the wind was not as bad as we thought it may be the top road of our course was very windy. This may have helped or hindered the PBs depending on your point of view. This week 8 of you managed to bag a new PB including Annie Kerr who knocked off nearly a minute since her last visit a year ago. There was clearly a bit of encouragement with the runners that came in at position 15 - to 18 as all four of them gained a new PB - teamwork - that's what we like to see!

Numbers were slightly lower than they have been in recent weeks with 85 people completing the course. The reason being that our parkrun family down the hill in Keswick were having a special parkrun in memory of their much loved volunteer and runner Lance Saxby who passed away suddenly a few weeks ago. Lance has been a great support to this parkrun too. As Jo explained in her run brief all Lance would have wanted was to everyone to take part and enjoy parkrun each Saturday morning and we know for those who had the privilege of knowing Lance that he and his family have been very much in our thoughts.

Lance loved parkrun. As such he would have been delighted to see 3 new people join us. Congratulations and well done to: Pippa McGuire, Sian Williams & Emma Plumpton for completing your first ever parkrun.

Once again our volunteers were amazing, our thanks this week go to:
John SCRIVENS • Helen SANT • Jo GRUCHY • Rachel JONES • Sonia DRYDEN • Brendan CARLIN • Paul BROWN • Suzanna CRUICKSHANK • Janet KNIGHTS • Pip CONLON • Ailsa HARRISON

Run Report Event #104

Event 104 will be another one to go down in the history books at Whinlatter Forest as we hit another milestone and cheered in our 10,000th finisher! Paul Bennett who came through the finish funnel in position 16 was awarded with a spot prize of a Whinlatter water bottle to recognise this amazing achievement. Since the event launched runners at Whinlatter Forest parkrun have covered 50,595 km which makes us well into our second lap if we were to circumference the earth!

Phil Bennett

On this momentous day Nicky Steels had lots to celebrate as he completed her milestone 50th parkrun and now joins the red t-shirt gang! Well done Nicky!

Nicky Steels

The field of parkrunners was 135 strong with 35 people completing the course at Whinlatter for the first time. Saturday saw 29 people gain a new personal best time. The lead group was quick with 3 out of the first 5 finishers bagging a new PB!

The parkrun family gained 4 new members at the weekend - welcome to: Stephanie Bradshaw, Yvonne Saddler, Calum Fraser & Paul Brown & Merlin the dog!

It was a crazy day for our volunteers who dealt with pretty much all of the technology failing at some point after everyone had set off. Their resilience and all round awesomeness meant that everyone was able to finish, record a time and finish place. Huge thanks to: Sally Jayne NUTTER • John SCRIVENS • Jo GRUCHY • Rachel JONES • Andrew JONES • Nicola INKESTER • Sonia DRYDEN • Brendan CARLIN • Paul BROWN • David WILSON

Run Report Event #103 – Our 2nd Birthday!

This week we finally got to celebrate our second birthday after the wind prevented us from going ahead the week before.

Whinlatter is 2

In true 2nd birthday party style, there were balloons, cake and party hats! The volunteers really stood out with their hats and high vis vests!

Colin Cake Party Volunteers Runners

It was lovely to see all 142 of you that came along to celebrate, it really created a fantastic atmosphere. Out of the 142, 53 people were new to Whinlatter Forest parkrun.

Joining the celebrations were Tony Duncan who completed his 50th parkrun and so joins the red t shirt gang and Mark Manley who completed his 100th parkrun - great milestones and congratulations from everyone at Whinlatter Forest parkrun.

Tony Duncan

In total there were 25 new PBs set on Saturday. Mike Walker who took finish token number 1 gained a new PB, as did Sabrina Shaw who knocked quite a bit of time off her previous best and this was only her 2nd run!

It was wonderful to see so many people join the parkrun family - welcome to: David Huddart, Darren Parker, Jeremy Ellman, Ray Charig, Charlie Bradshaw & Rachel Smith. The 1st one is always hard, but it does get easier!

Zig Zags

On this day we were given permission to start at a later time of 10.30 AM which allowed Keswick parkrun to start at 9 AM, enabling those that wanted to, to run two parkruns in one day. It was amazing when the question was asked in the run brief who was about to do their second parkrun of the day to see so many hands go up in the air! What a way to start the New Year!

Busy Run Brief

Just under half the field were new to Whinlatter with 205 people completing Whinlatter for the first time. There were also 85 different clubs represented on Wednesday. We welcomed 9 people to the parkrun family. More celebrations as Rhiannon Jones & Dave Prescott hit the 50 parkrun miletone and Chris Holland got to 100! Congratulations!

For those who's New Year's resolution was to gain a PB, we hope Wednesday helped you a s 45 people gained a new Whinlatter parkrun PB! Fantastic stuff!

The atmosphere was incredible for the whole event and it was inspiring to see so many smiling faces at the end. The weather really played it's part on Wednesday which meant the views towards the Lake District were magnificent.

Towards Bob's Seat

On a perfect Saturday morning, I found myself poised at the start of Whinlatter forest parkrun amongst a field of 171 participants and one of 71 first timers!

Great build up by the RD....clear, concise and well presented....

The first 500m downhill stretch provides a fast blast off, time to find your pace and rhythm, ready to tackle the ascent.... up we go and up some more!
Some spectacular views on a Winters day like today and well worth that slog up....
A few flat sections break up the climb and some recovery downhills are welcomed... nice little section through the forest and a small overlap point for runner's...the finish is a welcome downhill through the timekeepers (almost needs a catch net)!....
Well organised instruction in the funnel....

Thanks to the 10 volunteers who made it job!
Well done to the 20 participants also who posted new pb's.....

Run Report Event #99 The one before Christmas!

The last Whinlatter parkrun before Christmas, so obviously it was going to be a Christmas affair! Thanks to all of you who came dressed in seasonal attire, you all looked fantastic.

Santas Finish

This week we had 106, people complete the course - some of you had travelled amazing distances to be with us - setting off from Aberdeen at 3.30AM to get here and the family who made their way from Newcastle in Australia!

Aberdeen Oz

The weather was a bit murky, but that didn't dampen our spirits and we still saw 6 people gain a new PB - including parkrun's very own Simon Tobin - well done everyone! Mike Harper completed his 50th parkrun and joined the red t shirt gang - well done!

We congratulated Matthew Atkinson for finishing 1st and Rose Singleton who was first female - both looking very festive!

Rose Matthew

The dogs of parkrun looked brilliant in their Christmas dress too...

Run Report Event #98 A Record Breaking Day!

Saturday 14th December will go down in our parkrun records books! Not only was it possibly the worst weather conditions with horizontal hail, sleet & snow but it was the day that parkrun friends Ewan & Paul broke the most amazing barrier. It was the day that Paul helped Ewan in his wheelchair to complete the entire course! Those that have visited us before know that we are famed for our rather challenging course and that we have the most elevation of any parkrun in the whole of the UK. The fact that they completed course was no mean feat and is completely incredible. Huge kudos to both of them and massive congratulations! It was lovely to see and hear everyone cheer them both around the course.

Ewan & Paul Ewan & Paul 2

Congratulations are also in store for the 3 people who gained a new PB - George Fawkes, who took finish token 1, Michael Childs and Deborah Hallsworth. Well done!

George Fawkes 1st 3

Despite the wintry conditions this week 81 people came along to run, jog or walk the course and were supported by 9 amazing volunteers:

Tiny Tail Walker

Suzanna was very kind and brought along Celebrations for everyone to enjoy at the end, but we are not allowed to sing Happy Birthday! So, we'll just say it instead...HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUZANNA!

Run Report Event #97 Peter Hits 250!

Another week on the hill and another reason to celebrate.. this time is was to celebrate Peter Battrick's 250th milestone parkrun! Peter chose to mark this huge occasion by volunteering to tail walk. Not an unusual occurrence as Peter has volunteered many times at Whinlatter parkrun and in fact has his 25 volunteering milestone t shirt too. Previously Peter was instrumental in the setting up of parkrun in Norfolk in 2014 - an amazing legacy to leave the people of Norfolk but we have to say we are chuffed to have Peter here as part of our event. 250 parkruns is no mean feat and of course we couldn't let it go unmarked and so presented Peter with a cake to say well done!

Peter Battrick

We also had Paul Sheldon with us again this weekend. Paul chose Whinlatter to complete his 100th parkrun and this time he was here to complete his 150th parkrun and he gained a new Whinlatter PB too - really doing it in style! Congratulations!

Paul was one of 7 people who bagged a new PB this week. In total we had 74 people complete the course, of which 19 people were at Whinlatter for the forest time.  Well done to Ian Kirby who completed his first parkrun and joined the parkrun family!

Christmas was definitely in the air, we had a Christmas tree complete the course and volunteer marshal John had chrismassed up his direction t shirt! A brave few completed the parkrun course then went straight back down the hill to run the Santa Dash straight after! Amazing.

Christmas John Christmas Tree Tree 2

We end this week by saying a huge thank you to this week's volunteers - an amazing bunch of people, this week they were: Peter John BATTRICK • John SCRIVENS • Jo GRUCHY • Rachel JONES • Chris HILL • Sonia DRYDEN • Brendan CARLIN • Andrew KNIGHTS • Janet KNIGHTS • Anna FERGUSON
