parkrun return 24 July

Thank one to a lovely tourist parkrunner who volunteered to write a run report. Thank you Mhairi!

At last we're back! As Scottish tourists we were exceptionally lucky to be on holiday and able to attend the return of Whitley bay parkrun after the long covid lockdown. It was a bright, but overcast morning. The atmosphere was one of gratitude and real appreciation for the return of parkruns across the country that have really been missed. Whitley bay has a lovely open space at the start where runners were able to socially distance before the race. There was a reassuring breeze keeping the air fresh and the germs away.

As the run director started the briefing there were several enthusiastic rounds of applause. It felt really emotional to be back amongst the parkrun family. I've never seen so many runners smiling at the start of a run. The volunteers were extra smiley even though the high fives were no longer allowed. The run felt wonderful and everyone was bemused to be lapped by the most speedy banana we'd ever seen. That's right folks, the number one place today was achieved by a runner in a full length banana suit.

Clearly the whitley bay parkrunners have put in some serious training during lockdown as there were over 60 pbs today. There were over 50 first timers trying out the course for the first time, some experiencing their first parkrun. Overall, an excellent start to the return of parkrun and a reassuringly safe process for anyone who is worried about risks.

Double wow!! Massive turnout this morning with 497 runners joining us on the links.

Thank you all for your patience in the funnel as we worked through handing out the tokens in the queues. We formed two queues to prevent a build up beyond the timers and we did our very best to make sure everyone got the correct token - however, if you feel you are in the wrong position please let us know.

We had 6 runners this morning who ducked out of the funnel before taking a token, and we think we have fixed this. Please remember to take a token if you cross past the timers.

A few runners who were scanned are showing as errors, so if you were scanned and aren't showing in the results please email. Full run report is below:

Pacer Week!

We are trying to organise a pacer week for the first Saturday of every month.  If you'd like to volunteer we will be covering 19-40 minutes.  Please email whitleybayoffice@parkrun.com if you'd like to be involved!

Reminder regarding Under 11s at parkrun

Every week in the pre run briefing we try to get some key messages across. One of those messages is about under 11s needing to run with an adult. This is a key parkrun safeguarding and insurance requirement.

The adult does not need to be a parent, but does need to be someone over 18 who the child and parent is happy they run with. If you can't keep up with your speedy children, do speak with other runners or members of running clubs - lots of our under 11s are registered with clubs.

We will be talking to any unaccompanied children this week and thank you in advance for your cooperation.
