Run report – 2nd October 2021- Event No 376

Thanks again to Christine Rowley for todays run report:

On Saturday 2 October 2004, 13 runners and 5 volunteers took part in a free, timed 5k run in Bushy Park, London, known then as the Bushy Park Time Trial. Today, exactly 17 years later, 256 participants and 17 volunteers assembled in West Park on an overcast and somewhat chilly morning to take part in our 376th event. Luckily, the rain held off long enough for everyone to get home and dry! Alex Duce led the way in his first parkrun, Lucie Tait- Harris took second place in her 95th.

In interviews this week parkrun founder, Paul Sinton-Hewitt, emphasised the role of volunteers. He commented that, at the beginning, it was all about how few volunteers would be needed for an event to take place. However, over the years it has become clear that volunteering is about much more than event logistics - and itself has a significant role to play in people’s health and well-being. Amazingly almost 60,000 of registered volunteers have never completed a parkrun. So if you know somebody who is not quite sure if they want to have a go - why not encourage them to come along as a volunteer. That way they can see what it’s all about. If they decide that they don’t want to run or walk, they will always be welcome as one of those (almost) 60,000 very necessary members of the parkrun community

Phil and the Gang

Not having a place in the London Wheelchair Marathon, Midlands runner and volunteer Philip Buckley decided that Wolverhampton parkrun was the next best thing. Quite right too! He and his mates took Wolverhampton by storm with a splendid wheelchair run finishing in 41.34 minutes.
I hope that they all enjoyed their well-deserved breakfast at the Newbridge afterwards.

100 and counting..
No shout outs for milestone runs at the moment but Elizabeth Beardsmore and her 100 balloon made sure that she wasn’t missed out on her special occasion. She also has 17 volunteer credits and now she’s achieved this milestone, plans to get her 25 volunteer T shirt this year as well. Congratulations on both counts
Congratulations also to Karen James who reached her 50th milestone today. No balloon, Karen so I didn’t spot you but if you have a pic- please post it
