Run Report – 9th October 2021

Yesterday reminded me how much I love parkrun!!

It was a warm, dry morning and West Park looked beautiful as ever, apart that is from the historic bandstand which is undergoing some much-needed renovation work.

Ten of my immediate family members were there, including four grandchildren looking forward to their ride around the park. There was the usual buzz of anticipation at the start, and smiles of relief and pleasure, some etched with a little pain, at the end!

We had a full volunteer rota; they were a great bunch and all seemed to enjoy themselves. We were especially lucky to have medical expertise amongst our tail walkers for the minor (we hope!) injury sustained by one of our runners – thanks Jaye!

And, to cap it all, results processing was very straightforward using the new phone app. This has proved to be a big improvement, and is so easy to use – even I can manage it!

So, thank you all for running, walking or run/walking; and thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers, especially some of our regulars; Sharon and Clare on Timekeeping, Maggie on Scanning, and Sharon on Number Checking, who have given us such great support since the restart. You’re all stars!

This week 284 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 28 were first timers and 36 recorded new Personal Bests.

The event was made possible by 22 volunteers:

David NORMAN • Harry CRESSWELL • Tim RICHARDSON • Jeff JONES • Jaye RYAN • Karen RIDD • Clare DENNER • Andy JARVIS • Hayley DILLOWAY • David SMITH • Sujan SHARMA • Maggie BREWIN • Laurence GILKS • Bertie SWIFT • Becky JOHNSON • Monika AMOR-WILKES • Hazel FLATLEY • Sharon WRIGHT • Myfanwy TERRY • Satwant KAUR • Trevor FLETCHER • Sharon ELSON

Run report – 2nd October 2021- Event No 376

Thanks again to Christine Rowley for todays run report:

17 YEARS OF PARKRUN

On Saturday 2 October 2004, 13 runners and 5 volunteers took part in a free, timed 5k run in Bushy Park, London, known then as the Bushy Park Time Trial. Today, exactly 17 years later, 256 participants and 17 volunteers assembled in West Park on an overcast and somewhat chilly morning to take part in our 376th event. Luckily, the rain held off long enough for everyone to get home and dry! Alex Duce led the way in his first parkrun, Lucie Tait- Harris took second place in her 95th.

In interviews this week parkrun founder, Paul Sinton-Hewitt, emphasised the role of volunteers. He commented that, at the beginning, it was all about how few volunteers would be needed for an event to take place. However, over the years it has become clear that volunteering is about much more than event logistics - and itself has a significant role to play in people’s health and well-being. Amazingly almost 60,000 of registered volunteers have never completed a parkrun. So if you know somebody who is not quite sure if they want to have a go - why not encourage them to come along as a volunteer. That way they can see what it’s all about. If they decide that they don’t want to run or walk, they will always be welcome as one of those (almost) 60,000 very necessary members of the parkrun community

Phil and the Gang

Not having a place in the London Wheelchair Marathon, Midlands runner and volunteer Philip Buckley decided that Wolverhampton parkrun was the next best thing. Quite right too! He and his mates took Wolverhampton by storm with a splendid wheelchair run finishing in 41.34 minutes.
I hope that they all enjoyed their well-deserved breakfast at the Newbridge afterwards.

100 and counting..
No shout outs for milestone runs at the moment but Elizabeth Beardsmore and her 100 balloon made sure that she wasn’t missed out on her special occasion. She also has 17 volunteer credits and now she’s achieved this milestone, plans to get her 25 volunteer T shirt this year as well. Congratulations on both counts

Run Report 4th September 2021 – Event No. 372

Thanks very much to Christine Rowley, who has again written a run report for us, as well as doing our First Timers’ briefing and canvassing more support as Volunteer Co-ordinator. Three roles in one! Thanks also to everyone who offered to volunteer in future weeks.

“It was overcast but quite warm for this morning’s run. Those of you who walked across the park will have seen how splendid the flowerbeds look, the Council’s gardening team doing an excellent job as always.
As I was Volunteer Co-ordinator, I thought I’d focus on the volunteers today. Had a chat with 18 of them and found out that between us we had volunteered on at least 344 occasions, that’s getting on for 20 each. Some people prefer volunteering to running, others volunteer when injured or for other health-related reasons. This week a special mention is due to Veronika Foster who was combining marshalling with being 36 weeks pregnant!
The majority of volunteers however are runners who have given up their own run to make a contribution, often responding to a late email when there are gaps in the rota. What a difference it would make to the core team’s job if everyone who ran volunteered even just once or twice a year.
As the runners streamed in, clipboard at the ready I sallied forth to seek out more volunteers. Some runners looked straight through me, others just gave a shake of the head or muttered something inaudible. One woman, when asked if she would like to volunteer, replied “No,” abruptly, while glaring at me as if I had suggested something quite inappropriate and possibly immoral!
Several people told me that they couldn’t volunteer as they came from Telford. For a while, I thought that maybe this had become an all-purpose excuse whose arrival I had missed; the modern equivalent of “the cheque’s in the post”. However, it transpired that the Telford run had been cancelled, the route being blocked due to heavy rains. This was quite ironic as several of our regular runners had gone off to get Pretty Muddy in Birmingham. They probably had to import the mud there.
One man said that he couldn’t volunteer as he ran marathons. I wasn’t entirely sure how the one precluded the other. To be fair, he did begin a complicated explanation but I had to excuse myself to gather more names...
But in the end, it was very heartening that a good number of people came forward for the next few weeks. Being a glass half-full sort of person, I am sure that all those who promised to volunteer when they had checked their diaries will also be in touch…. And finally, if you have never volunteered and have racked up a fair few runs, why not consider giving it a shot? “

Congratulations to Laurence Shakespeare, Steve Warrilow and Kevin Hever, who all ran their 50th parkruns today!!

This week 339 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 31 were first timers and 56 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 30 different clubs took part.
The event was made possible by 23 volunteers: Jonathan HARPER • Anna BARRELL • Nerys JONES • Tim RICHARDSON • James ELSBY • Bruno MUSTONE • Philip EVANS • Martin NELLANY • Veronika ULICNA • Philip EVANS • David SMITH • Bertie SWIFT • Tony TAVERNOR • Peter YEUNG • Victoria SMITH • Sandeep RANDHAWA • Christine ROWLEY • Joshua SMITH • Darren QUINN • Sharon WRIGHT • Sondesh KUMAR • Zoe SMITH • Sharon ELSON

Run Report 28 August 2021 – Event No 371

Thanks so much to Christine Rowley for today’s run report and also for barcode scanning and doing the first timers briefing.

”It was a lovely sunny morning for the Bank Holiday parkrun. West Park was gearing up around the big top for the 9.30 start of  Kidsfest - part of Wolverhampton’s  Relight Festival. However around the bandstand there was plenty of room for maintaining social distancing.
I had the pleasure of doing the First Timers’ briefing. Oddly, few attendees at the briefing were willing  to say where they came from - but we did have two runners from London, one from Cambridge and one from Telford.  One man said that, as he was from Poland, he had come the furthest. Had to disallow this claim as he does actually live in the UK. Nice try!
It was also my second time for barcode scanning. I was nervous about this the first time but I am now satisfied that it is virtually impossible to accidentally delete runners’  times!  It  is very easy - so do give it a go. It’s really quite fun and you get to put names to some familiar faces - or, if you like to peruse the results regularly- match faces to some familiar names. Our visitor from Cambridge, incidentally,  was well pleased with his PB. Finally, I asked one of the parkrun newcomers if he had enjoyed it. He thought that enjoyment was possibly too strong a word but promised that he would definitely come again…”

Congratulations to our runners today who achieved their milestones:

Hazel Flatley and Gareth Law both chalked up 50 runs.
And also to Jessica Yang who reached the 10 run milestone in the junior category.
Your Milestone T-shirts will be available soon.

Parkrun report 21st Aug 2021

Hello all,

A good spirited but very wet Parkrun today. All of the volunteers were amazing, especially as they were getting soaked. Many great performances and good to see Parkrun once again being enjoyed by so many on a Saturday morning! There were lots of soggy paper barcodes today, certainly made me think it might be worth investing in a waterproof one.

Until next time!
