Event cancelled: 27/11

We have taken the decision to cancel today's event due to adverse weather conditions.  We don't feel that we can safely run the event in these conditions, particularly for volunteers who would be standing out in the cold for so long.

Event 16, 20th November 2021: it’s a run not a race (except sometimes it’s a double buggy race)!

This week's run report is by parkrun uber-Tourist Richard Amos:

Setting off to a parkrun that’s not your home run always means an earlier start and some preparation and planning. As usual my wife and I weren’t ready on time, we had to get our twin girls changed and in the car, get them snacks, the running buggy, change of clothes, shoes and buggy suits! Oh and don’t forget your barcode. “Petrol, we need petrol”, it’s not like parkrun on a Saturday morning is a surprise as we’ve been going every week for a while.

Woodgate Valley isn’t too far for us to get to and it’s really going to help in our efforts to fill up our Wilson index*. Last week we came for a 15 and back this week for a 16!
It’s just 22 miles which is a real bonus. Petrol first as the car says there’s 11 miles left in the tank, quick stop and were off again. 12 miles in and Lyla (twin 1) had a coughing fit and threw up in the back of the car! Good job we bought a change of clothes, quick stop, clean up and change and were back on the road again. 20 miles in and we remembered from last week there was no toilets! Stop number 3 was at a leisure centre we had spotted a sign for, result!

We made it to Woodgate Valley for 8:35, just got to build the buggy, put buggy suits and shoes on! Quick go on the slide and the swings and were ready, “apples, we need the apples” both girls strapped in apples in hand and we make our way down past the horses to the start, and listen to the briefing. Being our second visit we knew what to expect today, so I moved a bit closer to the front so as not to be stuck at the start. Lucy stayed near the back with the buggy, so she didn’t get anybody’s way. I spotted another double buggy and may have mentioned that there could be a race on today! Lucy doesn’t like trying and thanked me for that. GO! 2k of downhill through a lovely green and autumnal park. Hit the “turn around” point and then its 3k back up to the finish, which is great because you get to see other runners coming down the hill.

Double Buggy "Race"

I Loved getting to wave at the girls, who were in second place in the not buggy race that was totally not happening! Repeating a course so close together is always challenging for me as I put too much pressure on myself to improve time from the previous week. I’d decided to push a bit harder on the downhill as I was closer to the front and hope for the best. Luckily I was able to knock 15 seconds off from last week. Boom! Who doesn’t love a course PB.

After scanning in and speaking to RD Jo and I headed back down Horsey Hill to find Lucy and encourage the other runners back in. Amazingly Lucy had moved in front of the other buggy on the hill, I was surprised and proud that her passengers weren’t screaming! I ran back in with them encouraging her all the way to the finish, to take the first double buggy finisher of the day. Scanned in and then back to the park for a quick run around before our short and less eventful journey back home.

We both really enjoy coming to Woodgate Valley, the marshals are awesome, very encouraging and supportive. Not sure what event were coming to do next time at Woodgate but I’m sure it’ll be sooner rather than later and hopefully a little less stressful on the way there! Thank you for an amazing parkrunday.
